Final: North Branch 3, Princeton 1

Section 5A final is set:
(4) Chisago Lakes vs (2) North Branch
Thursday 2/28 at lovely Elk River Arena and its large, luxurious lobby
Don't they still share the same rink for practices and home games? Too bad they just cant stay home and duke it out.

Tonka and Holy Family tied 1-1 with 11:52 to go in the third in another playoff thriller between these two teams. HF has never lost to Tonka in regulation. Pete Waggoner and Bart Archer on the call:
https://youtu.be/Z31NSjtEet4

2:28 to go, still tied 1-1. Luedtke out after huge (legal) hit on him.

Tied 1-1, going into OT.

HF wins 2-1 in OT.
Stunning! The way HF is playing right, especially with Huber in net, this will be a tough team for EP to take down, but HF will need to find ways to put the puck in the net more frequently.

Congrats to HF. Didn't expect they could keep up with Tonka for two years in a row. Here is Pete Waggoner's call on the game-winning goal in OT:

Benilde 3, Wayzata 2

Entertaining game at BIG. Wayzata was on in the first period and Benilde was sloppy with the puck. Wayzata's defense only allowed three shots in the first period as they shut down any BSM attack past the red line. It was the opposite in the second period with Benilde dominating play. Third period saw the edge go to Benilde with the game winning goal coming with about three minutes left in regulation. The common theme from this game was the power play conversion as three of the five goals came on the advantage. Wayzata scored twice on a 5 minute major for kneeing, which was the first time I've seen that infraction called in a game I've attended. Benilde has got some speed and use it to get around defenders. They will be a good team next year with a lot of youth with three freshmen on the varsity roster - not much turnover. Decent crowd at BIG - 90% full or so. Some open areas by the penalty box area and benches.

Postponing the 1A games was the right call =D>
I have about 3” of snow since 7pm and the wind is starting to really pick up. I can’t imagine trying to head back to Albert Lea or LSHSTPTCUC in this. Monday they can bring kids a whole lot more safely.

Given all the social media options these days this old technology bored still had just over 100 viewers at one one time tonight. Thanks to Mitch, Lee, and Karl =D>

At 10 pm Gov. Tim Walz put Freeborn County in a state of emergency and activated the National Guard to help stranded motorists.

Congrats to Holy Family...they clearly owed Tonka one from last year and used that as motivation tonight. And hats off to the Tonka seniors, they had a hell of a run the past 5 hockey seasons!

Here's a description of the game-winning goal for Holy Family against Tonka:

Eric Zimmerman (@eazy98)
"The Fam game winner was a Pino zone entry, he fed Reddan on his left wing who cut across the front of the net and slid it five hole. Crazy end to the game, Tonka fans will be salty they didn't get calls in the 3rd but seemed even IMO @FollowThePuck"

Here's a video clip of HF celebrating and Tonka G Charlie Glockner lying face down in the background. You can see HF goalie Huber consoling Glockner at the very end:

MNHockeyTV (@mnhockeytv)
"IT’S OVER! HOLY FAMILY KNOCKS OFF #2 AA MINNETONKA IN OVERTIME!! Ben Reddan gets the OT winner just over a minute in. @FollowThePuck @UpNorthHockey18 @tourney__19 0:15"

Too bad Chaska couldn't win today. Would have liked to see those guys have a chance against HF to get to the X

Good point. One of them would've been a first-timer to state.

Long day of hockey, though I guess this is just a preview of what I'll be doing for four straight days in a week and a half. The games at Amsoil all followed a script, with a sense of "hey, this could be interesting" after one period and one team quickly pulling away in the second. Andover looked every bit a top five team, East's stars came to play and they locked down once they went up, Hermantown is Hermantown, and Greenway shows a lot of fun flashes. Hopefully today's lopsided affairs set the table for some better games on Wednesday and Thursday.

Thanks to everyone for the updates and details here...always appreciate coming home to more info than one can read in a string of tweets!

It was probably Chaska’s last chance for a while. You don’t get four D-1 players on a roster everyday.

Chaska will be relevant next year as well, if Lavelle and Pitlick stick around.

Agree Pitlick wont be back. And unfortunately Chaska/Chans dynamite youth squads will be splitting off to three high schools , so could be a while before another Hawk run.

Its going to be all EP in Section 2 AA next year. Middlestadts. And if there were any Batchelder/Holt doubters left, things should have been put to bed in recent weeks and yesterday.

Care to explain how Pitlick has no HS eligibility left? He is only a junior.

They’ll lose some and be a bit younger again next year, but return 6 of top 9 forwards and 2 of their top 4 D. No Koster, Warnert, or potentially Pitlick hurts a lot, but still some good core players and good goalie. They also add multiple likely future D1 players from a top 5 or 10 Bantam AA team. Who knows, perhaps they’ll be even better when they are no longer relying on just a couple top players, much like the Tonka Bantam AA team a few years back only found their own once K’Andre Miller went up to the high school team.
