Agreed, it was a good article. A little meandering at times, but he brings up some excellent points. I particularly enjoyed the part about the contrast in how the the same type of play is viewed in different areas of North America. It’s hard to say that either perspective is better, but it shows the different emphasis on certain skills and traits.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

That's what I took from that article. It's so true. There are players I have watched over the years that continue to get opportunities on the better teams/at the next level and I cannot understand why. I see one thing, somebody else sees something else. The perfect description of this is the part in the article about the dangler. One person sees a turnover machine, another sees a confident player that is willing to try something to make a play. I've almost given up trying to figure it all out.

Everyone sees kids differently. Especially scouts

One scout will call the kid a puck hog
the other standing right next to him will call the kid "highly skilled"
The dad on my left may not like his back checking
the dad on my right loves how "offensive minded" he is
I may evaluate the kid based on his "IQ"

So who's the best at picking out talent

Probably none of us .... It may just be my wife...She simply looks at the box score and see who has the most points

I see of ton of highly skilled kids that can't think their way around the rink (yet seem to make every top team)
I see a kid who can't skate but ends up with 2 points nearly every night (and gets cut)
I see 4 foot kids playing like they're 6 feet tall and plenty of 6 footers who won't go anywhere near the corners

It what makes our sport so much fun to watch (and in this case, talk about)

No they are not. They basically do scouting reports and articles on junior, college, and NHL prospects. Mostly pay-to-view, but every once in a while they’ll do an “unlocked” story like this.

Interesting point- author said player can be above average across the board and go unnoticed by junior scouts-exceptional play in a certain area will gets noticed.

Unlike the laughable scouting news these guys are credible. I would never pay for something like that but junior and USPHL / NCDC teams might etc.

They are 100% more credible than Scouting News. I don’t personally know of any junior teams using the service, and like you I wouldn’t myself, but they’ve been in business for long enough for me to assume they have a fair few customers!
