School size and education was absolutely a factor here. However, these issues were known going into the original move to Minnetonka, so clearly hockey and the fact that the skippers were favorites also played a major role in the first transfer. I truly believe that the transfer back has more to do with education and what’s best for the kid than hockey though. Just my 2 cents from somebody only partially in the know.

On another unrelated note, since there are clearly a fair few mshsl rule experts on this forum (not sarcastic): I always had an assumption that recruiting in hs is not allowed, but when I look through the rules, I don’t see it ever discussed or explicitly forbidden. Was I just mistaken, or am I missing a section of the rule book? (Note: I’m not saying the MM case is recruiting. Again, this is entirely unrelated).
Bylaw 308
Undue Solicitation of a Student
Any verbal or written contact initiated by a
representative of another school resulting in the
transfer of a student will be considered as asserting
undue influence, for which the school may be publicly
censured, removed from tournament competition,
suspended from the League, or fined.
Thanks! Knew it had to be there somewhere just couldn’t locate it. Interesting to see the wording. Definitely can see how some schools are able to locate the loopholes.

Wasn't his dad the head coach at St. Francis at one time?

He was in a very bad car accident and had a severely broken leg. Critical condition for a while if I remember right.

If a transfer comes to a school, but the school sees the transfer in town before the actual date, does that mean then that the transfer must transfer before the transfer transfers to the school that should have denied the transfer ?

Was Mason Langenbrunner to EP a well known thing? I didn’t comb all 22 pages, but also didn’t know that. Committed to Harvard today. Lists EP as home. Youngest Mittelstadt congratulated his new teammate. “Can’t wait for the season.”

OTC is correct. However they get a financial aid type package. For example John Farinacci (per his dad) is getting a full ride as is Derek Mullahy, in the form of financial aid. It's done different in the IVY league. He still is playing there for free though. I forget how he worded it exactly. I am not sure if it's different player to player (like with athletic scholarships where some kids get full, some partials).

Have a friend whose daughter was recruited by an Ivy League school. He was told they don't offer athletic scholarships but they said it would cost the family no more than 10% of their household income per year. I have another friend who was recruited by and Ivy in track and field. He was told they couldn't offer a scholarship but lined him up with a Mpls business man who was an alumnus and things got taken care of.

Ivies can get rather "creative" in their financial aid packages, basically getting the athlete into school with little or no money out of the family's pockets. Because of this, I don't believe the Ivies are held to the D-I athletic scholarship limit of 18 full equivalents for hockey. They could have a roster of 25-30 players, all on full rides, in theory.

BSU, every school has kids on athletic scholarships and students that receive some type of financial aid. Bob Lohr has won on the PGA Tour. When he played college golf for Miami (OH) his tuition was paid via the Evans Scholarship. Point being that the U of M, Wisconsin, and North Dakota also may have a player not receiving an athletic scholarship on the roster who is on a different type of "full ride".

I think lost in this discussion is creative financial aid at Ivy League schools isn't just for athletes. There are many students receiving grants, aid, scholarship, etc...

Some college coaches have a son on the team. Often a job benefit for university employees is that their kids can attend with no tuition. I'm not positive that was the case with Allen Houston at Tennessee, but suspect it was. One of Don Lucia's sons played for the U of M, but I am not familiar with the financial arrangements.

Are talking about an Ivy league school or Breck when it was a "hockey school"?

Ivy League schools (and some of their like-minded ilk) do not give athletic scholarships, period. Instead, they have a commitment to meet 100% of what they define as the "financial need" of the accepted student. Relatively few families pay the sticker price for an Ivy education, and they are often far more affordable than other private schools and event most state schools. I suppose Mason Langenbrunner, given his father's career earnings, might be one of the ones who would pay full freight. But the Ivy League exists only because of this shared philosophy on athletic scholarships--while its schools do obviously have a lot in common that makes them unique, the Ivy League as an institution is nothing more than an athletic conference like the Big Ten or the SEC.

That said, kids can certainly gain preferential admission for being student-athletes. If the Harvard coaching staff wants Mason Langenbrunner and he is at least a reasonably competent student, they can probably get him in. Attempts to game that system were at the root of the college admissions scandal earlier this year, as wealthy parents tried to buy their way in through athletic programs, presumably because the students weren't competitive in the general admissions pool.
