2020 Ms. Hockey discussion

Post by j4241 » Sat Oct 12, 2019 11:23 am

All just my opinions - and please add names I’ve omitted!

Candidates?

Gopher recruits seem to have a leg up for this award (rightly or wrongly), which this year are:

Nicholson (Tonka)
Burton (Blake)
Wethington (Blake)
Jungels (Edina)

Other exceptional seniors:
Delianedis from Blake (Cornell)
Mobley from Breck (Quinnipiac)
Langseth from EP (Mankato)
Bourgerie from NWC - (St. Cloud)
Skelton from NWC (corrrect?) - (Vermont)
Corneliusen from Warroad (Merrimack)
Davis from Edina (UMD)

This is 11 - no doubt more will be candidates for the final 10 - but I would give long odds the winner comes from this list.

My prediction:
Delianedis - best forward on what will be a top 3 team (at least). Was 5th in the state in scoring last year, with Bourgerie the only other players on the list playing AA (and NWC had a much weaker schedule). Delianedis combines elite skill, elite mental and physical quickness, a great vision, a non-stop motor and off-the-charts compete level. Lights up the elite league like a Christmas tree. Biggest challenge will be how strong the surrounding team is, and the odds against them going Blake back-to-back. Burton and Wethington are also both elite seniors, and will no doubt make strong claims of their own for the award. Wethington also benefits from the USA hockey endorsement, playing for the U18 team for the second year.

Couple observations:
Regarding the U18 endorsement - this would seem to favor Nicholson, playing this year for the third time. I think Nicholson is a fantastic D, but she’s no Maddie Wethington, and it’s tough for a D to win an MVP award unless they’re putting up video game points, and I don’t think that’s her game. She also has another D on her team who will look every bit as good as her, which will make it tougher to fight the uphill battle of a D winning.

Mobley will be the best player by a lot on what will nevertheless be a very good Breck team - she would be my runner-up. Although not playing elite league? Not sure why.

The two Edina seniors above are both very good, but I don’t think either is the best player in Minnesota, even if their team ends up being the best.

It’s weird not having a player from the team that might be a pre-season favorite to win state (Andover), but next year they’ll have several candidates.

Langseth will carry the EP team, so will benefit from the spotlight, along with likely very good performance.

Similarly with Corneliusen - she will put up video game points, albeit against a weak schedule.

NWC might just shock the world - and they have two great players.

Obviously a long season, surprises happen, some kids keep getting better, some stop working hard - but thought I’d kick off a discussion.

I'll add one player to the conversation - Steigauf at H-M. She will score a lot of points.

Okay, another - Nelson from Andover will score a ton.

Who would be considered the #2 defender in the 2020 class? Little (Andover)? Robinson (Brainerd)? Ziegler (CDH)? Schuster (Stillwater)?

Hey wait a minute. What is this Davis - UMD business?

Apparently she decommitted from Harvard over the summer, during u18 tryouts, and committed to UMD.

Wow.
Vindication for someone on this Board who brought this up last month.

Vindication? No one questioned whether the player withdrew a verbal commitment to Harvard and committed to UMD - that was/is common knowledge.

I don’t think it was common knowledge when it was posted to this board. Maybe common knowledge is different for us.

Not a big deal. Just giving the guy credit who brought it to the board.

I absolutely may be wrong but I do not think that Skelton is at NWC. I believe that it is another player from that team. She is elite and would absolutely make that team much more of a threat in the Lake Conference and sections.

I’m not sure either, but thought I’d heard that.

The other players mentioned (Steigauf, Little, Martin, Mashuga, Habisch) are all very good, but it seems likely they start the year as long shots, in my opinion.

Well thought out post j4241!!! Thank you for getting this started. I agree with a lot of what you wrote.

Unless injured Steighauf and Nelson will be in top 10.

Here is my top 5 and then 10 barring injury (in sort of order):

1a. Nicholson (She is by FAR the best 2020 D but like you said the difference at least this fall between her and teammate Guilday is slim. She has all of the intangibles to get it from 3 years on Team USA, a C/A this season for that team, committed to Gophers, & plays for a team in the Cities. Offensive production from her and how well Tonka does will matter too. 11-13-1 record again and .67 ppg is not enough)

1b. Delianedis (Agree with all of your analysis but Cornell vs MN/WI could be a factor along with her size. Made every elite USA camp but never made the USA camp. Might have been size issue and also being a later 2001 vs a 2002 matters. If USA hockey was grad year vs birth year she absolutely would have gone further IMO. Everything else is spot on. She has averaged 1.5 ppg since she started HS hockey as an 8th grader!!! She is going to light it up again this season and if she has a slightly better season points wise she could end up with 250 points for her HS career. 50 points per year for 5 years...surrounded by a great players but also a top 8 SOS every year. WOW!!!)

1c. Burton (Gopher. A 2 way player who is a way above average defensive F. She will light it up offensively and of the top 2 might have the most upside from a national team perspective.)

4a. Mobley (A similar player size wise to Burton. Heading east to Quinnipiac. Breck has a top 5 SOS but has a small black mark due to them being A vs AA. She and her team will score A LOT this year and they are a top 5 team in the state.)

4b. Langseth (will score a bunch and would be even more noticeable if she was on a top 5 team. I cant figure out how she was never a team USA player as an 02.)

6-9 (alphabetical)

Davis (will score more points than Jungels. I like them both equally. Only 1 Hornet representative this season imo)
Nelson
Steighauf
Wethington

10
Corneliusen or Skelton (I believe that Skelton from Cambridge is a the best outstate player but will not quite have the video game points that Corneliusen will have. Rud from St Cloud is a nice outstate player too but will not have the points that C or S will have. Advantage Corneliusen because she plays for Warroad.)

I wish that they had a top 5 for D and then a top D award like they do for the boys.

2020 D top 10:

1. Maggie Nicholson. Minnetonka (Minnesota)

2-10 in alphabetical order (imo they are really all pretty close...some bring a little more O, others a little more D, and others are more balanced)

Dornseif, Mahtomedi (Princeton)
Hackley, Wayzata (undecided)
Johnson, Blake (Holy Cross)
Killian, SPU (Union)
Little, Andover (Maine)
Martin, NWC (Saint Anselm)
Nelson, FLAKE (Minnesota State)
Robinson, Brainerd (Dartmouth)
Ziegler, CDH (Middlebury)

Not in my top 10 (yet?) but absolutely is on the rise and could have a BIG year and make the top 10 is Sophie Urban. Often forgotten like Wayzata as a whole (19-7 overall last season and finished ranked #7 at the Hub) in the extremely tough Lake and Section. She is big, strong, and skilled. A tireless worker who along with Mobley and Steigauf make a really nice line heading to Quinnipiac next year.

She's a good player, but the third best forward on Wayzata. Is the senior class really weak enough that a third best on a team that won't contend (though will be solid) can be a top 10 player in the state?

That may have sounded more critical than intended. Wayzata will be capable of beating just about anyone next year, and she is a very good player on a top 5ish team.

Great for NWC & Maddie! I thought it was another player that moved from the "move in" thread when someone talked about the "Sheldon's" moving to NWC. Makes sense now...I am excited to see how she does with that group of players!!!

Many of the the players that will be considered for Ms Hockey have to take into account there schedule. Some of these players are playing extremely tough schedules. The out state players that don’t play any games in the cities have to be excluded from the list. Rud for example had less point as a junior compared to her sophomore year. Not sure how 40 points with half coming against very weak programs even qualify you to be mentioned.

Blake, Edina play such a tough schedule hard not to put them at the top of the list.
