The Argy Bargy 3A Thread 2019-2020

Post by Teak »

I talked with the father of a Marshall player and it looks like Caspers will play with his buddies in Marshall this season. Good news.

Also, both Welvaert and Caspers played in the Elite League this fall which is a first for any Marshall player, I believe.

First game is away to Albert Lea on Friday, Nov 22.

Marshall, New Ulm, Litchfield-Dassel/Cokato, Hutchinson, Luverne ... the usual suspects.

Was wondering when that thread was going to get started. From year to year, one of my favorite threads to follow.

Where is 3A hockey in the state? What’s the history there as regard to high school hockey.

Umm.. so a new area of the state gets some interest in hockey.... they obviously love hs hockey, why so negative man? Dont read it if you don't care. Honestly go re live your high school career in 7A or 7AA threads. Guaranteed no one here cares what you do.

You read that waaaay more defensively than I did. Seemed like an honest question from someone who would probably admit their knowledge of other sections may be limited.

I see that your handle is "defense" so maybe that explains it.

3A hockey is mostly down in the south and southwest corner of the state.

The history of 3A began when the state went to two tiers: AA and A. Before that it was only 3 hockey.

Marshall's Kaleb Welvaert signed with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the NAHL for next season. He joins his former teammate, and cousin, Mason Plante who lead the state in scoring last year and is playing in Fairbanks this year.

Still one week to go ....

Yeah, that Worthington win over Redwood Valley is nice to see. It wasn't that long ago that Worthington, long the doormat of SW hockey, could barely field a squad. I remember seeing them play with only 3 or 4 subs (skaters) on the bench. That lead to blowouts in the third period as those 8 or 9 skaters were utterly exhausted.

Painfully remember those days. Worthington has a full roster for the first time in years - the 10th graders who played Bantam A last year will fill out the roster well. Four guys were not playing last night for various reasons but still skating three lines makes a big difference. Trojans still gave up far too many shots but their goalie is very solid. They will be seriously tested Tuesday against Marshall, but when the full team is able to skate they should be the most competitive Worthington team in over 10 years and could surprise a team who looks past them.

Mound Westonka is headed to Marshall this week for the Thanksgiving Tourney at the Red Baron Arena. The other three squads are the "usual suspects" from past years -Marshall (of course, host), Fargo Davies (undefeated at tourney), and Pine City.

Games are:
Friday
5 p.m. Davies - Mound Westonka
7 p.m. Pine City Area - Marshall

Saturday
2 p.m. Loser bracket
4 p.m. Winner bracket

However, I will be elsewhere in the state watching a bigger matchup.

The Marshall Red Baron Thanksgiving tourney games are being streamed live at: marshsports.com/live-stream/

Fargo Davies easily beat Mound Westonka in the first game.

Marshall leads Pine City Area 4-0 after 2 periods in the second game.

Looks like Marshall faces Fargo Davies in the second game tomorrow.

Well now, New Ulm knocked off Marshall in Marshall, and Hutch have had a fine start to the season.

So, this is how I think 3A looks ranking-wise this early in the season.

1. New Ulm
2. Hutchinson
3. Marshall
4 - Whatever

Since Marshall had a great run last season, only to be beaten by Hutch in the semi's, I pick Hutch over them until it can be proven otherwise.

Oh yeah?! (Trying to generate an argument to heat up this forum.)

Well, I forgot about Litchfield, of course. But Marshall could and will beat Willmar if they play this season, so .... [-X
