nolook -

agree. scott should have been able to figure it out but i am sure he felt if he worked extra hard that he might be given more opportunity to show that he is a solid goaltender. if o'brien doesn't play much (which i don't expect he will) i would have expected lech to do the right thing and keep scott based on his two previous seasons with the varsity.

2 things:

first, im sorry, i shouldnt have talked about luberts the way i did.

second, yes, scott probably should have been given the spot over obrien. if obrien wanted to play for hill, then he should have came to hill as a freshman, if not as a middle schooler.

now, from what little knowledge i have about aha, they dont accept senior transfers (for hockey purposes anyway). can anyone correct me on that? maybe that should be given harder consideration in all schools?

My unbiased opinion.

I'm sure Mike Scott & Joe Dawson are nice kids but neither one was very good last year. HM's downfall last year was goaltending. They certainly had more talent and outshot & outplayed several of the teams they lost to. Dawson looked good in the first 2 games against Jefferson & WBL, but he was very shakey the whole rest of the season. Mike Scott had some good games against weaker teams but was brutal against Moorhead at the Excel at Christmas. Joey Phillippi was pretty solid for a 9th grader in several games late last season. Although he was in the nets for huge losses to Tartan (2nd game) & North (the Section game).

I'm sorry Mike Scott got cut but I don't fault Bill Lechner for keeping Tom O'Brien & Joe Phillippi as his varsity goalies. I suspect Danny McEnaney will get a look if either one falters.

I have a different opinion about transfers. Transfering is a fact of life in HS sports. Moorhead & AHA were partially built last year with transfers. So if Tom O'Brien's parents want to send their son to HM as a senior for hockey than that is their choice. I will bet you that they had no promise of a spot on the varsity.
They were willing to pay the tuition & take their chances. Their son will also get a pretty good education while he's at it. The wasted senior years at District 622 high schools is a whole other topic.

Bill Lechner is a good guy. Making cuts is the toughest job in coaching. I'm sure he weighs in time, effort & loyalty, but he has to pick who he feels is the better player. I will grant you that he faces pressure & politics , but so do all coaches. I don't care who the parents are, the Guentzel kids & Nick Pryor are good hockey players.

I for one am looking forward to the season. Brian Arrigoni might be the fastest & slickest player in the state and Mike Hoeffel will likely score 40+ goals this year as a Junior. They have an experienced defense. If one of the goalies can play well for them they can go 16-0 in the conference (as they did 2 yrs ago) and will be right there with WBL at section time. The Section 3 winner (WBL, Centennial or HM) can win the State tournament. AHA & Moorhead will not be as dominant as they were last year.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... nhs>bob at: 11/22/05 9:05 pm

to tell you the truth i do not think hill murry will make it 16-0 in conference play because of the team like st thomas... north st paul after losing the majority of their scoring flipped a total 180 getting stronger on defense and goaltending.. but still have sophomore sensation ben arnt arguably the best player in the conference and sophomore in the state... as far as tom o'brien leaving .. his two brothers both younger playing in ann arbor mich and not at north might have something to do with him leaving

No offense cllgehockey, but your post is a little hard to read. Anyways, does anyone here know how good O'brien is? I mean is he a consistently average goalie or is he pretty erratic?

He wasn't good enough to be a full time starter at North Saint Paul last year....doesn't that say enough!? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif ALT=" >D">

Actually his name is Nick Pryor (not a big deal). I believe it is his dad that is Chris. Anyways, I honestly have not a clue on why they did talk to him this early. I'd love to know myself, and sorry I couldn't have an exact answer.

He's a very talented and smart player for his age and I wish him the best of luck if that does indeed happen.

Tom O'brien leaving north st paul was not about not playing because he played and would have played this year.. north likes to rotate goalies until the coach finds the right one... but something that might play a factor in why tom left is that last year he had a younger brother on the team ... he left this year and is in michigan playing with another brother of his... so basically .. tom has two brothers that left north st paul he probably didnt want to stick around .. either that or he wanted a chance to play in state ..

ok...this is my first post. I never wanted to do this, but all this LECHNER garbage has gone on for too long. I played for Hill under Lechner. I was not a senior transfer, I instead, came as an eigth grader. I left my organization because I was not going to get anywhere. That is why kids leave their home town programs and go to Hill...because every year, they have a chance to go somewhere and do something(NOTE how I said "CHANCE") I was never promised a spot, but I worked my tail off, and I was privelaged enough to play two years. I played with Matt Johnson on JV. He is a good friend and a decent player. He had a bad tryout, and that was enough...he was on the "bubble" and did not show enough to get noticed.
As for Mike Scott...I consider him a friens as well, but what not many know is that he got cut from tryouts as a FRESHMAN...he was later brought back on the team as a backup. Later in the year the starting goalie left(HAMMEL-ST.THOMAS) Scott is a good goalie, and I feel didn't get his chance last season, however, what you never saw was how he reacted when he got bumped to JV. He was pouty, had a bad attitude, and never tried at the practices. That is something Coach Lechs hates...a quitter. Coach instills in all of his players-that by into the system-that Hill is more than just a team...it is traditon, passion for the game, education, and a life-long bond. The kids that left my team this past season, never bought into this system, and I will personally say, that I didnt want them on my team. They were negative, and just didn't care. Josh Carlson, would complain about ice time, Sam Yearsley was constantly in trouble with his grades. The one that had the balls to stick it out, was Ronning...he came ready to play hard whenever he could...that is what Hill is all about...caring so much for a team and teamates, that you are willing to sit on the bench, the entire year and still come to paractice every day and BLEED GREEN!!! Lechner is a great man, despite what you all think, he cares for his players so much. So the numbers aren't what they used to be...then why is HILL constantly hovering around the top 10 in the rankings...BECAUSE OF A STRONG SYSTEM...built by a coach that STRONGLY BELIEVES IN IT....
In closing, you don't gain the Hill Murray Hockey experience unless you are a player...
I DO BLEED GREEN...and always will

I don't understand how you can blame a kid for getting down after getting screwed. I can only imagine how frustrating it would be to get demoted the game after the other guy gives up 8 goals (while he stays on varsity). If Scott had such a bad attitude...explain why this year's best players and captains are so upset about him being cut. And yes, he was cut as a freshman, but then came back and went nearly unbeaten for the rest of that year...that show's a little about Lechner's judge of talent.
And if Scott and McEnany were upset at what happened last year, then good! Neither got a real chance for whatever reason....whether it be Lech's facination with Dawson or promoting Phillipi over McEnany when they were about equal on JV. I guess you are like many others that just expect them to bend over and take it like a man?
I have been following this program since before you were born, son. I always thought that if I have kids, it would be an honor to have them play at Hill....but if Lechner is somehow still there, I won't let it happen.

I am not blaming Scott for not getting a chance....I said that in the first post...But I am blaming Scott for giving up!! In Lechners system, if you give up, thats the end...In order to get out of "dog-house" you need to work hard everyday! By telling otherkids at school, that he his leaving, or going to quit, is not exactly sending a positive message......I agree with you that Dawson was brutal last year.. The game against Holy Angels was a pivitol game for us...he let in 7 goals off of 21 shots! Now, you have already pointed out that you are significantly older than I, but if my math is correct that is 1 goal every 3 shots. If you are aware of Tony Flint, the goalie coach, you would know that he works with each goalie at practice...and Mike Scott wouldnt work as hard as Dawson, or Phillipi. Call it luck, call it whatever you want, but beating the #1 team in the State, Moorehead...gave Lechner more confidence in the goalie situation than previously displayed. I am happy that you are still a Hill Murray fan, however, like I said if you didn't play for the pioneers, you really have no idea what it is like.....
