CLASS A RANKINGS 12/8/19
After Week #3 of Games, Some crazy results this week. Warroad over GR! EGF Knocks off both Grand Forks Powers. Hermantown Ties Benilde. How about North Branch losing to NORTH SHORE!!

1. Hermantown (2-1-1)

-The Hawks had another very good showing this weekend. Even though they go (0-1-1) on the weekend, they played right with two of the Top Tier AA Teams in the State. Biondi was as advertised, and the Hawks got some good decent goaltending, which was a cause of concern. This week the Hawks keep playing their AA schedule and take on Two programs that have made the jump in recent years from A to AA. Hermantown should roll in both games.
This week: Tues vs. Duluth Marshall, and Sat vs. Totino Grace

2. East Grand Forks (3-0-2)
-The Green Wave had a GREAT week as they beat two excellent North Dakota teams on the road. The win over Grand Forks Central is huge for the Greenwave; its been a long time since someone beat the three-time defending champs in North Dakota. The Greenwave proved again they deserve to hold on to the number 2 ranking. It should be an easy win on Tuesday followed by a good test with Alexandria on Thursday.
This week: Tues at Crookston, Thurs at Alexandria

3. Warroad (5-0-0)
-The Warriors provided the Big Win of the week AGAIN! After taking care of two weaker teams, the Warriors took down Grand Rapids on Saturday that is a big win for the Warriors. They have been tough with Foster in the net and have yet to allow more than two goals this year. Big Test on Thursday Night with TRF coming to town in the first of some very entertaining 8A Big Three March-ups. Don't sleep on the Prowlers; they will give the Warriors a great Test!
This week: Thurs vs. Thief River Falls, Sat vs. Sartell

4. Mahtomedi (4-1-0)
-The Zephyrs provided another very solid week. After being overmatched by a very good Hill Murray team, they responded by finishing the week with two good wins over SPA and Hastings. Mahtomedi only has one game this week, but it should be a good one at Monticello. Should help give us a better gauge where they are at within Class A.
This week: Tues at Monticello

5. Orono (4-0-1)
-The Spartans did their job last week in their only game of the week by beating Section foe Breck on the road. It appears that Section 2A is Orono's section to win, but they will get good in section test this week vs. Delano. They also have a good one scheduled with AA Chaska on Tuesday. This should be a good barometer week for Orono.
This week: Tues vs. Chaska, Thurs vs. Delano

6. St Cloud Cathedral (3-1-0)
-The Crusaders got a big boost this weekend with the early return of Nate Warner to the lineup. It seemed to have provided some spark as they soundly beat two solid Northern Hockey Teams this weekend. Now this week, just one game vs. AA Brainerd should provide another good test for the Crusaders.
This week: Fri vs. Brainerd

7. Alexandria (5-1-0)
-The Cardinals survived their terrible scheduling by beating three lower-tier teams. The last two got very interesting. It was a good test, and they passed now this week they get an even bigger test with Greenwave coming to town. They were overmatched by Orono in their last big match up to see how much they have improved on Thursday.
This week: Tues @ Sauk Rapids, Thurs vs. East Grand Forks

8. Duluth Denfeld (3-1-0)
-Hunters took the best loss of the remaining teams that look to be top 10 this year. They played a solid Cloquet team to the wire. Now, this week, they get a big match up rescheduled in from last week when they take on Greenway on Thursday that should be an even better indicator where the Hunters are early on this year.
This week: Tues vs. Virginia, Thurs. vs. Greenway, Sat. vs. New Prague

9. St Paul Johnson (4-0-0)
-Another week and two more solid wins for the Governors. This team looks to be solid. This week they two more winnable games on their schedule with a big matchup sandwiched in the middle on Friday night vs. Little Falls. They look to be the surprise team in Class A.
This week: Tues. @ River Falls, Fri @ Little Falls, Sat @ Detroit Lakes

10. Little Falls (5-1-1)
-Flyers had an easy week, and they took care of business beating two Section 6A Teams with ease. This week they get another easy game followed by a big match up with The Governors on Friday night at Little Falls. That game will help give us a better idea of both teams and where they stand early in the year. They also have a decent Mound Westonka team they host on Saturday Afternoon. We should know more about the Flyers after this week.
This week: Tues vs. Prairie Centre, Fri. vs. St. Paul Johnson, Sat. vs. Mound Westonka.

11. Tartan(3-2-0)
-The Titans got two big wins after a rough start to the week vs. Hastings. Their win over TRF on Friday show that Tartan should not be overlooked in Class A this year. They took care of business against Crookston on Saturday. This week just one game, but it is an interesting match up vs. Gentry Academy who is a Section game. Its a game the Titans need to win to stay high in this poll.
This week: Thus. vs. Gentry Academy

12. Greenway(1-2-0)
-The Raiders got blown up on Friday night vs. Cathedral. Had the goalie not been phenomenal it would have been 10-0 instead of 5-0. I am not counting out Greenway because they looked much worse at times last year. They do, however need to get certain things figured out. Coach Clafton will get them going but huge game vs. Denfeld this week.
This Week: Thurs. @ Duluth Denfeld

13. North Branch (4-1-0)
-The SHOCKER of the week happened last night as the Vikings lost to North Shore at home. This one is a head-scratcher and shows that North Branch has a long way to go yet. I was going to drop them out of the poll, but its just one game. Back to more easy games this week, hopefully they take care of business.
This Week: Thurs. @ St. Francis, Sat. @ Northern Lakes

14. Thief River Falls (3-3-1)

-The Prowlers had a tough weekend. Outplayed and outshot Tartan and lost a tough one-goal game on the road, then followed it up by getting outshot and outplayed and yet had chance tied with SCC, and then the wheels came off. This team can play with anyone in the state. Don't be shocked if they knock off Warroad on Thursday.
This week: Tues vs. Bemidji, Thursday @ Warroad

15. Monticello (2-2-0)
-Up and Down Week for the Moose as they got revenge vs. the team that ended their season last year by beating Chisago Lakes, and then they followed it up with a tough loss vs. Champlin Park on Saturday. They continue to play a much tougher schedule then North Branch, and that could come into play down the stretch. They have a big one vs. Mahtomedi on Tuesday, followed by some very easy Section 5A Games.
This week: Tues vs. Mahtomedi, Thurs @ Cambridge, Fri @ Sauk Rapids.

Other Class A Notable Teams (To Watch)
Eveleth Gilbert (3-3-0)-
Tough weekend road trip for the Bears taking two losses keeps them out of the top 15 poll again this week.

Delano (3-2-0)- Tigers are showing signs of life with two nice wins last week. Now they get their chance to prove they should be higher when they take on Orono this week.

Sartell (2-1-0)- Very YOUNG team but showing some good signs of progress early and should only improve as the year goes on.

Mankato West (2-2-0)- Looks to be the new front runner in Section 1A Played Alexandria very tough on Saturday.

Hutchinson (6-1-0)- Maybe the favorite in 3A. They have a big match up on Saturday vs. LDC. They have gotten some good wins early.

CLASS A GAME OF THE WEEK:
#9 St Paul Johnson at #10 Little Falls
This one should be a great battle. Both teams are looking to prove they are for real after playing weaker schedules to start the year. Both have one good result vs. TRF. Both were very young teams last year. This one should be a great battle.
Prediction: I will take the Flyers at home!

Interesting year in Class A, some potential of having fairly decent match-ups on Thursday at the X.

This ended up being a difficult week for rankings, as there were plenty of upsets and upheaval (as evidenced by how long it took me to write these up). At this point I feel pretty confident that top six teams are playing the most complete and consistent hockey, and the teams below them would either need to play a very strong game or catch them on an off day to pull an upset (with the exception of TRF, who has the talent but is a mess right now). We'll see if anyone can step up and close that gap.

Games watched: Mahtomedi vs Hill-Murray, Mahtomedi vs SPA, Orono vs Breck, Greenway vs SCC, Hermantown vs Benilde

1. Hermantown (2-1-1) [LW 1]
L 2-4 vs Eden Prairie, T 2-2 @ BSM
Despite not coming away with a win, the Hawks had a nice showing at the North-South Classic. Hermantown played the #1 AA team tough until EP pulled away a bit in the third period, and outperformed #5 Benilde for long stretches of their tie game. These results are difficult to analyze, but the Hawks certainly looked the part of a top-ranked team and remain there for now. Two more AA foes are coming up, though of much lesser caliber than the ones this week.
Next: Tue vs Duluth Marshall, Fri vs Totino-Grace

2. Warroad (5-0-0) [LW 2]
W 7-2 @ Crookston, W 6-1 vs Virginia, W 3-2 vs Grand Rapids
The Warriors are nipping at the heels of Hermantown, and may even have an argument for deposing them from the top. Following two easy five-goal victories, Warroad pulled off a mild upset over a Rapids team that had defeated two highly ranked AA opponents to open the season.
The upcoming week features an important 8A tilt against enigmatic TRF.
Next: Thu vs TRF, Sat vs Sartell

3. East Grand Forks (3-0-2) [LW 4]
W 3-2 (OT) @ GF Central, T 4-4 @ GF Red River
The Green Wave had a strong week venturing across the border, particularly in snapping Central's 43 game winning streak. EGF has a lengthy road trip Thursday night to face Alexandria, which should produce a helpful data point in judging these two teams.
Next: Tue vs Crookston, Thu @ Alexandria

4. St. Cloud Cathedral ( 3-1-0) [LW 5]
W 5-0 vs Greenway, W 5-2 vs TRF
The Crusaders returned to the win column in a big way, starting with pulling away from Greenway to remove any suspense from their championship rematch. TRF made things more interesting, tying the game at two early in the third before Cathedral rattled off three unanswered tallies. Although he was relatively quiet on the scoresheet, the return of Nate Warner seemed to kickstart the offense. A quiet week ahead with only one contest on the schedule.
Next: Fri vs Brainerd

5. Orono (4-0-1) [LW 6]
W 4-0 @ Breck
The Spartans comfortably dispatched Breck in their only action of the week. The margin could have been even larger if not for a few spectacular saves by the Mustangs' goalie, including one on a penalty shot. (Tangential rant: Breck is a mess right now, and there was a huge talent gulf between the teams. It's rough to watch as an alumnus.) Orono has a more challenging week ahead, including their first meeting with Delano, who looks to be their primary challenger in 2A.
Next: Tue vs Chaska, Thu vs Delano

6. Mahtomedi (4-1-0) [LW 3]
L 1-6 @ Hill-Murray, W 3-1 @ SPA, W 5-3 vs Hastings
The Zephyrs started out well against HM, with a 1-0 lead after the first period. But then the wheels came off and the Pioneers unleashed a torrent of offense (which continued against their rout of Blake). Mahtomedi bounced back with a methodical win over scrappy SPA, then took down a solid AA squad in Hastings. So why the drop in the rankings? Because I have watched Orono and Mahtomedi play twice each now, and I have been more impressed by the former. The Zephyrs hit the road for two winnable midweek games.
Next: Tue @ Monticello, Thu @ South St. Paul

7. Alexandria (5-1-0) [LW 8]
W 8-0 vs Willmar, W 3-2 @ Northfield, W 4-3 (OT) @ Mankato West
After blanking woeful Willmar, the Cardinals had a dicey weekend swing down south, barely emerging unscathed against two teams whom they easily outclassed on paper. Mankato West held a 3-1 lead after two, and Alexandria needed two goals in the final 1:23 to even force overtime. I am moving up Alex a spot begrudgingly because there aren't better options. They will definitely need to pick up their level of play when the Green Wave roll into town.
Next: Tue @ Sauk Rapids, Thu vs EGF

8. Little Falls (5-1-1) [LW 12]
W 11-0 @ Wadena, 6-1 @ Fergus Falls
The Flyers picked up two easy wins this week and continue to move up the rankings as other teams accumulate losses. The coming weekend will test whether they are worthy of this lofty perch, as two ranked foes pay visits.
Next: Tue vs Prairie Centre, Fri vs SP Johnson, Sat vs Mound Westonka

9. Duluth Denfeld (3-1-0) [LW 11]
L 4-5 @ Cloquet
The Hunters manage to move up two spots after losing? Yes, it was a "good loss" to a solid AA foe, but I am already starting to run out of options, and we haven't even rounded out the top ten. Denfeld will be busy this week with three games, but the headliner is the one against 7A rival Greenway.
Next: Tue @ Virginia, Thu vs Greenway, Sat vs New Prague

10. St. Paul Johnson (4-0-0) [LW 16]
W 4-1 vs Crookston, W 6-2 @ Rochester JM
Welcome to the top ten, Governors. This team is still bit of a mystery, with only the big win last week over TRF as the only real feather in their cap. That is something, though, and Johnson will have a chance to prove their mettle soon enough with a trip to Little Falls this weekend.
Tue @ River Falls, Fri @ Little Falls, Sat @ Detroit Lakes

11. Delano (3-2-0) [LW 13]
W 4-2 @ Kennedy, W 5-4 (OT) vs Buffalo
The Tigers picked up two wins against struggling opponents, though the second was against a neighboring AA rival. The style points were lacking, which is likely to be the case for Delano much of this year. There is only one game on the docket, though it is a huge one.
Next: Thu @ Orono

12. Greenway (1-2-0) [LW 7]
L 0-5 vs SCC
The Raiders ended up with only a single game this week, and unfortunately fell flat in the championship rematch. While Greenway hung around for about half of the game, they eventually succumbed to Cathedral's depth and speed. Another single-game week awaits, as Greenway travels to Duluth for an important sectional contest.
Next: Thu @ Denfeld

13. Monticello (2-2-0) [LW 13]
W 3-1 vs Chisago Lakes, L 4-6 vs Champlin Park
The Moose had a bit of an off week, escaping a scare from Chisago, and then coughing up a 4-1 lead to CP and surrendering five straight goals to close the game. Still, not many of the other teams in this range did much to distinguish themselves, either, so Monticello treads water in this spot. After previously putting a scare into Orono, the Moose get another shot at a highly ranked opponent, followed by what should be two cakewalks.
Next: Tue vs Mahtomedi, Thu @ Cambridge, Fri @ Sauk Rapids

14. North Branch (4-1-0) [LW 9]
W 6-1 vs Princeton, L 2-3 vs North Shore
As expected, North Branch cruised against two lesser opponents. Oh wait, what's that you say... they lost to North Shore?! Well, that messes up my copy and paste weekly summary. This is a tough team to rank - they don't have any big wins and just took a bad loss, but the talent is there. The Vikings hit the road twice this coming week, and should be heavily favored on paper.
Next: Thu @ St. Francis, Sat @ Northern Lakes

15. Tartan (3-2-0) [LW 18]
L 3-7 vs Hastings, W 2-1 vs TRF, W 7-2 vs Crookston
The Titans boomerang back up to #15 after knocking off previous #10 TRF. While the Prowlers may be struggling of late, they are still a talented group, and it was a nice statement win for Tartan. The schedule over the next few weeks is manageable, starting with a single game this week.
Next: Thu vs Gentry

16. Thief River Falls (3-3-1) [LW 10]
L 1-2 @ Tartan, L 2-5 @ SCC

17. St. Paul Academy (4-2-0) [LW 19]
W 4-2 vs Northfield, L 1-3 vs Mahtomedi

18. Gentry Academy (4-1-0) [LW NR]
W 5-0 vs Robbinsdale

19. Mankato West (3-2-0) [LW 15]
L 2-4 vs New Prague, W 7-2 vs Mayo, L 3-4 (OT) vs Alexandria

20. Hutchinson (6-1-0) [LW NR]
W 4-2 vs Princeton, W 6-3 @ Minn River, W 3-1 @ Marshall

Out: Eveleth-Gilbert (3-3-0) [LW 15], Marshall (3-3-0) [LW 17], Simley (1-2-0) [LW 20]

I’m not as optimistic with Greenway’s matchup with Denfeld after their performance against Cathedral. Denfeld has some excellent forwards who can move the puck. Greenway needs another defensemen badly. The moving of a forward to defense is not working out. It also really hurts the second line. The sophomore defensemen is still learning but he should be fine in the second half of the season. It will be interesting who will be on what line and who the fourth defensemen will be. The best chance Greenway has is if Logan Wright (goalie) can steal one for the Raiders.

Agreed. I saw Denfeld first had here in Cloquet last week. Those McClure boys, #18 and #8 are for real and only sophomores. Nice overall depth on forward lines and D pairings.

"CLASS A GAME OF THE WEEK:
#9 St Paul Johnson at #10 Little Falls
This one should be a great battle. Both teams are looking to prove they are for real after playing weaker schedules to start the year. Both have one good result vs. TRF. Both were very young teams last year. This one should be a great battle.
Prediction: I will take the Flyers at home!"

Agree. And I would add Saturday's game, LF vs Mound Westonka, will also be telling. LF needs to get over the hump and learn to beat teams like this to take the next step. Will see if they can do it. LF is talented, but aren't necessarily a fast team.

Hermantown just outshot Duluth Marshall 48-4, winning 10-0. And no JV for Marshall. I’d say that program is officially dead. And they play AA???????? Hibbing is officially dead as well. Proctor and Denfeld are in great shape long term. Not dead forever, just dead in their current form. Something drastic needs to change within those programs. Someday both will rise again, of course.

Who-Hoo-Hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that those teams there are only MOSTLY dead. There is a big difference between mostly dead and officially dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With officially dead, well,.. with officially dead there is usually only one thing you can do.

Rain is mostly wet until it dries up. Or in the winter time it mostly turns into snow because it’s so cold. Mostly.

Who-Hoo-Hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that those teams there are only MOSTLY dead. There is a big difference between mostly dead and officially dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With officially dead, well,.. with officially dead there is usually only one thing you can do.

The back half of the LPH rankings are bonkers. Are they even paying attention to Class A results?

I am not sure who is voting but I don't think they put much thought into it.

Can't wait to see the results of that first Warroad vs EGF game. Should be a doozy.

Cant wait until Warroad has to play a decent team on non-Olympic ice that other teams don't practice on every day

Warroad has gotten off to a nice start and it helps they have been home. Its a tough place to play.

They will be challenged tonight. Dont overlook TRF. Tonight should be a very good contest.
