Hey, the "bored" is back up and running! Sorry for being a little late to the party, but hopefully this will be a worthwhile read.

This week highlights one of the thorniest questions when ranking Class A teams:. How do you treat games against stronger AA competition? Five of the top six teams from last week faced ranked AA opponents, as did Denfeld and Greenway. My general approach is to disregard the results unless they are particularly good or bad. How will that shake up the rankings, if at all?

1. St. Cloud Cathedral (12-1-1) [LW 2]
W 2-1 @ Andover, W 4-3 (OT) vs Delano, W 9-0 vs Sartell
Following their frenetic comeback to tie Hermantown, the Crusaders remained the talk of the (hockey) town by defeating the previously top-ranked AA team. While some of the bloom came off of that rose due to Andover's subsequent draw with Totino-Grace, it remains the most impressive win by a Class A team over an AA foe so far this season. Cathedral nearly gave away all of that goodwill against Delano, but managed to escape in extra time. Perhaps their two biggest remaining regular season games await, with a road swing up I-94 to face a bitter section rival and a state title contender back-to-back.
Next: Fri @ Alexandria, Sat @ EGF

2. Warroad (14-1-0) [LW 1]
L 4-5 @ Roseau, W 9-0 vs Crookston
The Warriors picked up their first loss of the season in the most painful possible manner, watching a three goal lead evaporate against their bitter rivals. After looking like world-beaters for much of the first two periods, everything came crashing down in the third. While Warroad does have a head-to-head win over Cathedral, that was the second game of the season, and the latter has compiled more impressive results lately. Two big road trips are on deck: first to the mini-Ralph for a crucial section contest, and then to the big city for the pomp and circumstance of Hockey Day.
Next: Thu @ TRF, Sat @ Minneapolis

3. Hermantown (9-1-4) [LW 3]
T 2-2 vs Grand Rapids, W 5-5 vs CDH
The Hawks continued their sister-kissing binge with two ties against ranked AA teams, which makes it three straight draws overall. While impressive results, particularly with Cretin-Derham on a recent tear, it is not enough to supplant the teams above them. Hermantown starts the coming week with its most important remaining 7A game, followed by an odd matchup with St. Cloud.
Next: Tue @ Greenway, Sat @ St. Cloud

4. East Grand Forks (10-3-2) [LW 4]
L 3-6 vs Moorhead, W 5-0 @ Bemidji, W 3-0 @ TRF
The Green Wave had a roller coaster week, starting with a convincing loss to the red-hot Spuds, followed by two dominating shutout victories. The TRF performance was particularly impressive, as the Prowlers could barely muster any scoring chances and EGF eventually pulled away. The schedule is relentless, and we should learn a great deal about EGF by the end of the week.
Next: Tue vs Roseau, Sat vs SCC

5. Orono (13-1-1) [LW 5]
W 5-1 vs New Prague, W 5-3 vs Hutchinson
The Spartans had to break a sweat to put away Hutch, but otherwise breezed through some lighter competition for the second straight week. Things should pick up this week as Orono hits the road thrice. While Mound Westonka has been floundering, it is a rivalry game, and Mahtomedi will be hungry for a statement Class A win. Hopefully that game will give us an indication as to the relative standing of the two teams.
Next: Tue @ Mound Westonka, Fri @ Waconia, Sat @ Mahtomedi

6. Mahtomedi (11-4-0) [LW 6]
L 1-3 @ Tartan, W 3-2 vs Hill-Murray
The Zephyrs became the first of the "Big Six" to lose to a Class A team outside of that group, and potentially put their top seed in 4A in jeopardy. But then Ben Dardis stood on his head again and propelled them to another upset of an AA conference rival. On balance, that keeps them in place at #6, though there are reasons for concern. This Mahtomedi team is not exceptionally deep, and too often relies on Dardis and Dulak to carry them. Only one game this week, but it is a doozy against the team ranked just above them.
Next: Sat vs Orono

7. Duluth Denfeld (11-3-1) [LW 9]
L 4-5 @ Duluth East, W 4-0 vs Chanhassen
The Hunters couldn't quite come back from a three goal deficit against their crosstown rivals, falling short to the Hounds for the seventh straight year. Denfeld rebounded nicely to post a dominating shutout win over a solid Chanhassen squad. I'm not confident that Denfeld is necessarily the seventh-best team, but their body of work is solid, and no one else is making a good case for this spot. They will be heavily favored against two middling section opponents in the coming week.
Next: Tue vs Proctor, Fri @ Int'l Falls

8. Gentry Academy (13-2-0) [LW 8]
W 6-0 @ Proctor, W 3-1 @ Sibley
Not much to say here, as the Stars scorched two overmatched opponents. The soft schedule prevents Gentry from climbing higher, but they keep winning while others around them falter. The upcoming trip to North Branch has lost some of its luster, but still represents one of Gentry's better tests of the season.
Next: Tue @ Mayo, Thu @ North Branch

9. Alexandria (10-4-0) [LW 10]
W 3-1 @ Sartell
In their only action of the week, the Cardinals prevailed in a surprisingly close contest with a struggling Sartell squad. Still, it's enough to move Alex up a tick given the ineptitude of others in this area of the rankings. An all-Cardinal matchup with Willmar serves as an appetizer to what looks to be the most important 6A game of the regular season.
Next: Thu @ Willmar, Fri vs SCC

10. Little Falls (12-3-1) [LW 7]
L 0-1 vs River Lakes
In Greek mythology, Icarus was a tragic figure who plummeted to his demise after flying too close to the sun, which caused his wings to melt. This is an apt analogy for the Flyers, who crashed and burned in an ugly shutout loss just after I sung their praises, particularly for offensive prowess. River Lakes bottled them up for two periods, and Little Falls couldn't convert once they finally started creating chances. The Flyers have three more home games this week that look to be wins on paper, but we will see if that actually turns out to be the case.
Next: Tue vs Sartell, Fri vs LDC, Sat vs Fergus Falls

11. Delano (10-5-0) [LW 12]
W 2-1 vs Hutchinson, L 3-4 (OT) @ SCC, W 5-0 @ LDC
The Tigers nearly picked off a Cathedral group riding high after their upset of Andover. Delano is fairly straightforward to rank, with no stellar wins to their credit, but also no bad losses. Two conference contests against AA antagonists await, with the Holy Family game being somewhat interesting, as the Fire have been, uh, hot of late.
Next: Tue vs Holy Family, Sat vs New Prague

12. Thief River Falls (8-6-1) [LW 11]
W 7-0 @ Park Rapids, L 0-3 vs EGF
The Prowlers failed their test against EGF, and couldn't generate any offense despite Rupprecht keeping them within striking distance for almost 49 minutes. As usual, that is their fatal flaw: TRF is able to stick close with nearly anyone, but lacks the scoring punch to actually pull out victories. Perhaps their biggest week of the season is on tap, capped off by the rematch with #1 Warroad.
Next: Tue @ Kittson, Thu vs Warroad

13. Greenway (5-9-0) [LW 14]
W 2-0 vs North Shore, L 0-6 vs Roseau, L 1-3 vs Grand Rapids
The Raiders' lack of depth was on full display against two ranked AA teams. The Roseau game was painful to watch, as Greenway outplayed the Rams for half of the game before the wheels came completely off. It feels crazy to actually move Greenway up a spot after two losses, but the pickings are slim in this range. The Raiders return to 7A play in a big way, with a chance to pick off their nemesis, and also to solidify their claim for the #3 seed.
Tue vs Hermantown, Thu @ Eveleth

14. Monticello (9-5-1) [LW 17]
W 3-1 @ North Branch
The Moose staked their claim as the class of 5A, pounding North Branch in a game that was not as close as the score indicated. Monticello is not quite up to par with the elite teams, but they have challenged those groups at times, and more importantly have taken care of business against lesser competitors. Speaking of which, they should easily collect two more section wins this week.
Next: Tue vs Princeton, Fri @ Chisago Lakes

15. Tartan (7-6-0) [LW 20]
W 3-1 vs Mahtomedi, L 0-6 @ Hastings
A bipolar week for the Titans, as they upset the #6 ranked team, then were put into running time against Hastings. That's a good encapsulation of Tartan's season, as for every impressive win they have tallied, there has been an ugly loss thrown in.
Next: Tue vs STA, Thu @ SSP, Sat @ Sibley

16. Eveleth-Gilbert (10-6-0) [LW 16]
W 3-0 @ Hibbing, W 6-2 vs Princeton
The Golden Bears have not been exciting, but have been reliable. They hold steady after two routine wins. E-G has a chance to make a case for the #3 seed in 7A this week if they can avenge their earlier loss to Greenway.
Next: Tue @ Int'l Falls, Thu vs Greenway

17. St. Paul Johnson (11-4-0) [LW 13]
W 5-1 @ Highland Park, L 4-6 vs Mpls, Sat W 5-3 vs Kittson
Not exactly an inspiring week from the Governors, as they dropped a wild affair to Minneapolis, giving up a six-spot in the third, and then squeaked by Kittson Central. Johnson should rebound with two winnable contests this week.
Next: Tue vs Simley, Fri @ Lake of the Woods

18. Pine City (12-2-0) [LW 19]
W 7-1 @ Highland Park
It is difficult to gauge how good the Dragons really are given their schedule. Wins are wins, though, and they have been dominating teams lately. There doesn't look to be any real tests this week, either.
Next: Mon vs Moose Lake, Thu @ Princeton, Sat @ Cambridge-Isanti

19. North Branch (11-4-0) [LW 18]
L 1-3 vs Monticello
The Vikings flubbed their chance at a big section win. They were largely overmatched against the Moose, and things devolved into a scrum at the end. This season is looking like a bust, but a win against Gentry would go a long way toward salvaging it.
Next: Thu vs Gentry, Sat @ Princeton

20. Mound Westonka (10-5-1) [LW 15]
L 1-3 @ Waconia, W 5-2 vs Providence, W 5-2 vs New Prague
The White Hawks continue to plummet after an ugly loss to Waconia. Still, they do have a handful of nice wins, and it's difficult to find other teams worthy of being ranked. Mound Westonka now has an opportunity for a premier win against their rival.
Next: Tue vs Orono

Out: None

Others Considered: Mankato East (7-7-1), Minneapolis (7-7-2), River Lakes (9-4-1)

The bar has been raised for ranking write-ups now that we have our first ever Icarus allusion. Excuse me while I go revisit Gilgamesh for material for next week.

I agree with this ordering of the top six. I feel like #7 in Class A is the equivalent of #1 in AA in its revolving door status, but it's interesting to see Denfeld appear there. The real question is if they can gameplan for a playoff Hermantown rematch. (Of course, they have to get there first...while Greenway lost to Rapids, I still saw some hints of the old magic when Troumbly touched the puck in that one.)

Regarding Little Falls' loss to River Lakes:

1. Yes the Flyers laid an egg, but.....
2. Don't discount River Lakes. They are a solid club that can play a tough physical defensive style that keeps them in games against good teams. And their tendy is decent. I wouldn't be surprised if they pull a split in consecutive games with Alexandria upcoming.

Ha, I thought that you in particular would get a kick out of that reference, Karl. I often play off of the team names for puns, and for some reason Flyers triggered Icarus in my weird brain.

I actually learned about Icarus in around 5th grade in a very crummy public school. What kind of stuff were they teaching you up there in pseudo-Canada? But I was also a weird kid who found mythology fascinating.

Yeah, I watched most of that game, and came away impressed by River Lakes. Their style seems to be kryptonite for Little Falls. RL is bit like a a poor man’s TRF in the way they play.

I wrote the myth of Icarus.

Of course there was another famous Icarus up north.
He was the farmer next door to us out in Ericsburg. He carried a pitchfork with him all day, but never used it.
Until one day he went up to the loft of the barn and started tossing hay out. To no one or thing in particular.
But then the pitchfork went flying through the air followed shortly behind by old Icarus.
Of course old Icarus could not fly. It would have been real funny except the pitchfork came down business end first and found old Icarus in a not so friendly spot.
We neve saw that pitchfork again.

Question. If CEC moved down to A in HS boys like our girls did. Would we be a true A or an AA sandbagging as an A. Would CEC and Hermantown be a good thing, or bad, if they just switched to CEC in 7A and hermantown in 7AA.

Should be an interesting mid ranking tilt tonight between Alex and Monticello...played a few of the same top ten teams, Monticello kept them closer than Alex, but alex destroyed some teams that Monticello had a hard time pulling away from.
