OS Bridge season

Post by j4241 » Wed Oct 28, 2020 2:37 pm

Same opening comment, different league. Games start next Tuesday (I believe). Can I humbly propose posting scores/comments/notable performances here?

Games Tuesday that I'm aware of include:

Hill Murray vs. Blake (two teams probably starting out the year outside the top 10)
Benilde vs. Andover (two teams firmly inside, and one at the top)

Others?

I may have been wrong on Blake's schedule - sounds like Stillwater is Tuesday, and Hill Murray is Thursday.

Will be interesting to see the approach each team takes. I imagine a few may treat it like preseason scrimmages - rolling several lines, trying out combos, etc. Others will probably play them like regular season games - PPs, top lines seeing the ice more, etc. Differences in ability are present across these teams - could be reduced or exacerbated if any coaches are working off different plays books. That, plus the total lack of preparation via practices. They’re all on the ice with captains practices, but my guess is few are working on power plays, developing chemistry with specific linemates/pairings, etc. could lead to interesting scores. But anyone who learns them, please post!

Well, the HS coaches aren't allowed on the benches, so I highly doubt there will be much strategy outside of "next line up."

These girls play 75-100 games a year. One thing I've learned from my skater - they know which games truly matter (HS and college showcase games) and which games are being scheduled because adults are filling ice time.

Interesting - that wasn’t within the MSHSL, the OS league or the XPL? So just played without any insurance coverage?

Looks like OS is putting some of the details of this league on their website. The two selects teams look to be tough for anyone to handle, including Edina and Andover:

First game looks to be tonight at 5 - Breck vs. Holy Family.

Andover over Benilde tonight at Breck, 2-1. Huskies controlled the first two periods, outshooting BSM 29-10, getting first period goals from Isa Goettl and Ella Boerger. Maddy Clough was credited with an assist on the Goettl goal. BSM found its legs after the ice cut, registering the first 9 shots of the 3rd period and cutting the lead in half 5 minutes in, as Mary Zavoral scored on a rebound, assists going to Emma Pechel and Emma Hoen. The Andover PK took over from there, killing off a 2-man advantage for 1:33 later in the period to securfe the 2-1 win. Hannah Skavnik made 22 saves for Andover, while Carly Greene stopped 30 of the 32 shots she faced. Huskies held a 23-22 advantage in the faceoff circle.

Thoen88 should be a great game between us on the 18th. Did you have all your players against Andover?

Played the Trojans last night score 5-5, refs were way to many penalties in the third period on us,would have won the game if not for all penalties. So we are 1-0-1 un beaten against 2 very good teams.

Benilde beat Gentry Saturday night at Tria, 3-2. Ugly hockey game for the most part. 19 total penalties, 41 penalty minutes and the teams combined to go 0-for-15 on the powerplay, including BSM not scoring on 2-man advantage for 1:46 in the first period and Gentry not scoring during a 5-minute major in the 3rd. Strong PK on both sides....we'll go with that.

Anna Podein gave BSM a 1-0 lead midway through the first as he wrist shot from the left point made its way through a heavy screen, beating Gentry goalie Maggie Vance. Theresa DeCesare assisted on the play. Game stayed that way until middle of the 2nd, when Emma Hoen sprung Meggan Kocourek on a breakaway. Kocourek was hauled down from behind and awarded a penalty shot on the play. Kocourek beat Vance on the PS to make it a 2-0 game.

Podein made it 3-0 late in the 2nd when she came out of the penalty box and caught a Maya Jones clearing pass and beat Gentry's Rylie Bartizal, who had entered the game midway through the 2nd, to make it 3-0.

Gentry took advantage of a BSM turnover at the offensive blueline early in the 3rd to make it 3-1, as Angelina Ruiz tapped in a rebound of a Rachel Agerter shot. With just under 5 minutes left in the game the Galaxy made it 3-2 as again it took advantage of a BSM turnover, this time just inside the BSM defensive blueline. Alexa Hanrahan beat goalie Allie Van Stelten to make it 3-2, which is how the game ended. Van Stelten finished with 28 saves to earn the win.

Benilde and Stillwater tied 3-3 at Breck Wednesday night. Save for a 5-minute stretch to end the middle period, this one was controlled by the Red Knights. Best player on the ice for the first half of the game was Stillwater goalie Sophie Cronk. BSM controlled the offensive zone for the game's first 25 minutes of play. But thanks to Cronk, BSM was only up 1-0 on a Mary Zavoral goal 4:40 into the second period. Emma Hoen assisted on the play.

Stillwater found its legs later in the middle period and they were rewarded at 13:00 as Morgan Wohlers poked in a rebound to tie the game. At that point BSM held a 23-9 advantage in shots. Didn't matter to Stillwater, which capitalized on a PP less than a minute later on what was the prettiest goal of the game. Addison Finn slammed home a one-timer on the back door after a gorgeous cross-ice pass. Stillwater owned the final 5 minutes of the second period, outshooting BSM 8-1 during that span.

BSM went back to work to start the third and they tied the game a little more than two minutes in as Lucy Hanson converted from the slot after a nice backhanded pass from Lily Mortenson from behind the net.

Less than 2 minutes later, Stillwater got a fortunate bounce while on the powerplay as a centering pass by Myah Krueger deflected in off a BSM defenseman and past Allie Van Stelten to make it 3-2. Sydney Scheel and Gracie Bancroft were credited with assists. The game stayed that way until BSM converted on the powerplay with just 2:32 left in the game. Emma Peschel took a cross-ice pass from Hoen and wristed one through a maze of players to tie the game 3-3, which is how it finished.

As noted, Stillwater outshot BSM 8-1 during the final 5 minutes of the second period. For the other 46 minutes of the game, BSM held a 39-12 advantage, finishing with a 40-20 advantage.

Sure appears that the Red Knights are getting their share of some very competitive pre-season games. Has to help them when they start to play the games that count. And a big thanks to Thoen88 for the detailed write-ups.

Benilde and South Selects play to a 2-2 tie at Breck. BSM controlled the first period but South held a distinct advantage in the final two.

Ten minutes into the first, Benilde's Maya Jones poked home a rebound of a Lily Mortenson shot on the powerplay to give the Knights a 1-0 lead, which is how the period ended as BSM held a 13-5 advantage in shots.

The game changed dramatically in the second and it didn't take long. Less than a minute into the period, BSM goalie Carly Greene had to leave due to equipment issues. In came Allie Van Stelten and South picked up its game. Van Stelten played five minutes before Greene was able to get her equipment repaired and in those five minutes, the BSM junior faced 8 shots and 3 odd-man rushes. South tied the game 65 seconds after Van Stelten entered, as Whitney Tuttle gobbled up a rebound of a Brenna Fuhrman shot and put it into the open net.

Six minutes later, with Greene now back in the game, South took its first lead of the game on the powerplay. Fuhrman picked up a puck along the wall in the neutral zone and skated around the BSM defense, cut hard to her left in front of Greene and tucked the puck into the far side. After getting dominated in the opening period, South tilted the ice in the second, outshooting BSM 20-8.

The Knights didn't wait long to answer in the thrid, as Sophie Melsness pulled a puck out of a scrum in the left corner, skated out to just inside the faceoff circle and wristed the tying goal into the upper corner just 53 seconds into the final period. From there, it was nothing short of miraculous that neither team scored, as both had grade A chances throughout the final 15 minutes but nobody could capitalize and the game finished in a 2-2 tie.

North Selects used a quick start and rock-solid goaltending to beat Benilde 4-2 Saturday night in an outdoor game at The ROC in St Louis Park.

A strange game to type the least. Three minutes after the opening draw North was up 2-0 on goals from Hailey Eikos and Dani Burgen. BSM didn't register it's first shot on goal until the 10-minute mark of the opening period and just a couple of minutes after that, Audrey Garton scored to push the lead to 3-0, which is how the first period ended.

The game shifted dramatically once the middle period got underway, as BSM controlled the faceoff circle which in turn led it to controlling the puck as well.

Junior Emma Hoen pulled BSM to within a pair as she stripped the puck from a defender along the wall and beat goalie Maitlin Groess shortside on a backhander 2:47 in to the second. The Knights kept up the pressure but North added a back-breaker 4 minutes later as Dani Brunette scored a shorthanded goal to make it 4-1.

Just 90 seconds later Meggan Kocourek converted a Theresa DeCesare rebound to make it 4-2 and from point on the game, the North goaltending was the difference.

Over the final two periods, BSM outshot North 34-10 but Groess and Hailey Hansen were exceptional, specifically Hansen, who made several "WHAT" kind of saves. Disappointing the game wasn't streamed (outdoors) because she was that good. Not breaking any real news here, but Hansen may not get as much recognition as some other metro goalies because her high school team isn't a current powerhouse, but she is as good a goalie as you will find in the state. Very impressive.

As mentioned, the Knights were able to control the play because of their prowess in the circle, winning 34 of 51 draws. For the game, BSM held a 45-21 shots advantage. Reagan Wurm, Burgen, and Kailey Niccum were credited with assists for the North.

Knights skated all over the Crimson Tuesday night at Vadnais Sports Center, posting a 5-2 win in a game that was fairly one-sided. It took just 65 seconds for the scoring to get underway as Lucy Hanson converted a Lily Mortenson pass in the slot. Four minutes later Maya Jones wristed a shot through a maze of players, beating a screened Donna Fowler for a 2-0 BSM lead.

The Crimson cut the lead in half six minutes later as Lauren Stenslie turned in a beautiful solo effort, beating one defender and then chipping the puck over the glove of BSM goalie Carly Greene.

The Knights got the eventual game-winner three minutes into the middle period while on the powerplay. Emma Peschel's wrist shot from the right point was tipped in front by Emma Hoen to make it 3-1. Annie Juckniess was also credited with assist on the play.

Fowler was able to keep the game close throughout the second period, as she withstood constant pressure, stopping 14 of the 16 shots she faced. With less that four minutes left, the Crimson inched closer as Courtney Leising converted on the rebound of her own shot to make it 3-2, but just 27 seconds later the lead was back up to two as Avery Junker scored her first goal of the "bridge league".

Sophie Melsness added an insurance goal for the Knights with five minutes left in the final period to make the final 5-2. Greene only had to make 14 saves to earn the win, while Fowler stopped 33 of the 38 shots she faced for the Crimson.

Benidle skated past the Fire Wednesday night, 3-2 at Breck Arena. Competitive game but weird in the fact for each of the three periods, the team that controlled play ended up being outscored.

Just a minute into the game BSM junior Sophie Melsness took a Lucy Hanson pass through the neutral, skated into the Fire zone, beat a defender and then wristed a shot over the glove of Sedona Blair to make it 1-0. Aided by a couple of penalties by the Knights and the Fire quickly retook the momentum.

Less than two minutes after the Melsness goal, the Fire evened the game at 1-1 while on the powerplay. Josie Linn won a clean faceoff in the offensive end back to Olivia Paidosh, who's wristshot was stopped by goalie Allie Van Stelten, but Maddy Helmstetter was there for the rebound to tie the game at 1-1. While the Fire controlled much of the play after that, it was the Knights that regained the lead later in the period as junior Mary Zavoral dug the puck out of a scrum behind the net, skated in front and gobbled up the rebound of her own shot and beat Blair high to the glove side for a 2-1 lead, which is how the period ended.

The Fire quickly tied the game in the second, as MacKenzie Moss's shot/pass from below the goal line somehow found its way into the just 1:28 into the period. From that point on, the second period was all Knights, but Blair was up to the task. BSM outshot the Fire 18-3 in the middle 17 minutes, but the game remained tied 2-2 after 2.

The momentum again swung back in the Fire favor in the third period, but it was the Knights that regained the lead t the 8:42 mark when a Meggan Kocourek wrist shot from 50 feet eluded Blair, which proved to be the GWG. Sienna Duffy assisted on the play.

The Fire pressed in the final minutes and had appeared to tie the game with just :01 left on the clock, but after a brief discussion, the puck was ruled to have been kicked in, nullifying the goal. For the game, the Knights held a 31-24 advantage in shots.
