'22-'23 AA Offseason Top 25

Post by Brodziak Fan Club » Tue Mar 22, 2022 10:44 am

*updated 8-3-22
As with last year, this is fluid and will be updated as news of transfers, early departures, coaching changes etc. comes out.

1. Maple Grove
2. Andover
3. Rogers
4. Moorhead
5. Edina
6. Lakeville South
7. Minnetonka
8. Benilde-St. Margaret's
9. Wayzata
10. Hill-Murray
11. Chaska
12. Cretin-Derham Hall
13. White Bear Lake
14. Chanhassen
15. Eden Prairie
16. St. Thomas Academy
17. Centennial
18. Shakopee
19. Holy Family
20. Grand Rapids
21. Stillwater
22. Champlin Park
23. Eastview
24. Rosemount
25. St. Michael-Albertville

Honorable Mention: Gentry Academy, Duluth East, Rochester Mayo, Sartell, Blaine, Buffalo, Totino-Grace, St. Louis Park, Lakeville North

*updated 8-3-22
Section Outlook

1AA
6 Lakeville South
Rochester Mayo
Lakeville North

Could next year finally break the all-Lakeville section final streak? Either way, it once again looks like South’s section to lose.

2AA
7 Minnetonka
11 Chaska
14 Chanhassen
15 Eden Prairie
18 Shakopee
19 Holy Family

Minnetonka appears to be emerging as the favorite among a deep pool of contenders.

3AA
12 Cretin-Derham Hall
16 St. Thomas Academy
23 Eastview
24 Rosemount

Cretin returns more than many might realize. Can a youth movement and a legendary coaching hire at St. Thomas wash away the taste of a disappointing season? Eastview and Rosemount lurk as real threats.

4AA
10 Hill-Murray
13 White Bear Lake
21 Stillwater
Gentry Academy

On paper, White Bear has a great opportunity to unseat Hill in this section. Their Hockey Day matchup will be juicy. Stillwater seems to be stuck in a cycle of “solid but not spectacular”. Can they break through and make this a 3-team race?

5AA
1 Maple Grove
3 Rogers
17 Centennial
22 Champlin Park
Totino-Grace

This looks like a collision course between two of the best youth programs in the state. Centennial and Champlin should both be capable of upsets.

6AA
5 Edina
8 Benilde-St. Margaret’s
9 Wayzata
St. Louis Park

This section may not be as deep as in years past, but the top is still pretty darn good.

7AA
2 Andover
20 Grand Rapids
Duluth East
Blaine

The Andover show. A different section champion would be a massive upset.

8AA
4 Moorhead
25 St. Michael-Albertville
Sartell
Buffalo

When was the last time we saw a gulf this wide between the top team and "everyone else" in this section?

Looks good. Thanks for sharing. I'll review closely when I have time. I'm interested in seeing if Chanhassen can crack Top 10 next year. They should be very good the next two seasons.

Based on YHH state trny season end podcast , following AA kids are questionable to unlikely for high school next year, apologize if any misinterpretation differences . A double hit to Chaska , LVS and SW if things turnout that way

Also , PL has dropped off your radar for HS next year . Losing their Big 5 seniors , but I think they’ve got about half varsity returnees. Input on how their bantams are looking ?

I would venture to guess that if McMorrow from BSM gets an invite to NTDP that he will accept

I was a little surprised that McElroy from BSM didn't get an invite to NTDP camp? Maybe height played a role? I think he's about 5'9" and all of the goalies invited were 6-0, 6-2. The blue coats like em' tall I guess?

They also mentioned that Stewart might try to jump to juniors but thought his size might hold him back.

I think they lose 6 F and at least 4 D...5 D if Reed jumps to juniors.

McMorrow - Consistent with my info, along with Skahan and Hensler

Could be one or two others still . Should know soon

Color me shocked that scouts overlooked Skahan's poor behavior while at SSM. They'll just chalk it up to a one time incident...even Hill-Murray was like "nah, you're not coming back here".

Best guess on who the other 1 or 2 may be?

It's very rare for USNTDP to look at any goalies below 6'....sad, but true. Their barometer of success is the measured by number of kids making it to the NHL, not D1.

One minor rankings adjustment with the early offseason news: Chaska and Benilde flip-flop in the 7/8 spots.

A couple tweaks:

The loss of both goalies drops Chaska a few spots.

The hiring of Randolph bumps STA up a spot.

Do we see this as another parity season with rotating #1s and teams regularly moving in out of Top5 / Top10?

Are any capable of 25-0? or 23-2 ?

This is pretty much conjecture from me, so take it with a grain of salt. I don't see quite as much parity as last year. Below are what I see as soft tiers going into next season.

A cut above the rest
Maple Grove
Andover
Rogers

Solidly Top 10
Moorhead
Edina
Lakeville South
Benilde
Minnetonka

Revolving door at the bottom of the top 10
Wayzata
Chaska
Hill-Murray
Cretin
White Bear Lake
Chanhassen
Eden Prairie
St. Thomas

Everything in my rankings is based on "official" early departure/transfer information only. Rumors, even if they are widely considered to be accurate, are not reflected.

Andover to high IMO. Big shoes to fill along the blue line and in goal.

And from the sounds of it, a handful of their top F could be moving on if they make their prospective USHL teams out of camp

Who are those sounds coming from? If you listen to the YHH podcast with Andover's Coach he expects all of their players back. He does admit that a few have options but that doesn't mean anything. I like his philosophy, see who shows up in the fall. Time will tell I guess.

Any word on if Nelson, Gunderson and Brink are playing for Maple Grove next year? If the entire trio comes back, they will be tough to beat.
