GIRLS HS HOCKEY COMPUTER RATINGS: DEC 18, 2022

After a snowy and icy week of winter weather, girls hockey around the region got some games in, but many postponements are to be rescheduled.

The top Minnesota team is Warroad and the usual suspects follow. Minnesota girls round out the top 34 spots.
The top North Dakota Team is Fargo Davies by about 1 goals worth over Mandan.
The top Wisconsin Team is Superior with the Hayward Co-Op not far behind.
The top South Dakota Team(s) are Brookings and Aberdeen. They both are rated approximately the same as the TwoRiver/St.Paul Co-op team from Minnesota.

Does anyone have an updated Ranking from this? Would be interesting to see the SOS of state tournament teams. Just thinking about the differences between all 8 teams and how wide a range they have. Edina, Tonka, Andover all played monster schedules. Rosemount and Lakeville stayed south of the river and Gentry played anyone that would play them. Centennial seems mostly north metro and moorhead did their best to bolster the schedule by making multiple trips down. I'm wondering what the numbers say.

They used to post the SOS too, but it's been absent the last couple year.

I took a quick look at all the schedules of the AA tournament teams. Below is a record of their games against other top teams (arbitrary/IMO), which includes games against top 10 teams from A and AA, and other participating AA tournament teams. Nothing new to see. The top 4 teams had really strong and equal SOS’s. We can see the reason why Moorhead got the #5 seed, and that Cent/SLP simply drew the short straw on the random draw for the last 3 seeds (they probably would’ve been the #6 seed):

Thanks! From that, here's the AA teams. I was a bit surprised to see Gentry at 31. It seemed like they played enough good teams to put them somewhere in the top 15 for SOS. I guess not. Too many not so good teams (St. Cloud, Sartell, Hudson, Red Wing, Hastings, Fort Francis twice, WBL). Not that it matters because they are a legit top 4 team.

Good question. Since it's noted that "Net Avg is a team's SOS average only in games which are used in PageStat", maybe PageStat removed the Canadian and Wisconsin games from Gentry's schedule? If that's the case, it moves them up to 7th, which would make more sense. Then again, Andover, Edina, and Tonka's net avg was adjusted upward also, and none of them played a CAN or WI team. Who knows.

I'm confused as well, as you said it probably removes non-MN teams for net but I can't wrap my brain around why there would be a difference. If, for instance, Fort Francis isn't calculated in Pagestat, why would that change a team's SOS? It's essentially a non-game, no? Fort Francis is of course not very good, but what if they were really good? How does the formula know if they're not included in PS? Maybe Lee can explain?

I assume the slight offset between net and gross for Andover, Edina, etc. is because one of their opponents played a team that is not used in PS?

I assumed that also, but then a team like Cent/SLP would've been adjusted since they played Gentry too. But they stood at 17.740 for both Net and Gross. It's a mystery that I'm sure Lee can easily solve for us.
