Section 2A Final (2/28/24)- #1 Orono vs #3 Minneapolis

Post by ClassAGuy »

Orono has been on a roll late in the year and dominated the regular season meeting with MPLS. However, the 612 crew just knocked off a very talented Delano team and looks to be very hot coming in can they pul another upset?

#1 seed Orono Spartans (19-8-0)
Orono enters the 2A Final looking to repeat as Section Champions. The Spartans have been one of the best teams in Class A all year. They did go through a little struggle in the middle part of the season as they were hit with a bad rash of injuries. However, they were able to develop more depth during that time and now they are healthy. They come in rolling having gone (6-2-0) in the month of February and they seem primed to return to State out of Section 2A.

Spartans Leaders- Sophomores #34 Jackson Knight (19-19-38 pts) & #16 Rory Kvern (14-13-27 pts) and Seniors #6 Easton Sankey (13-12-25 pts) & #22 Tommy Lewin (8-12-20 pts) lead a very deep Orono offense. Seniors #27 Joey Mugaas (10-24-34 pts) & #5 John Engebretson (5-20-25 pts) leads a very good defensive unit and they can jump up and contribute at any time as well.

Spartans Goalie-
Senior #30 Peyton Anderson (14-7-0) 1.96 GAA .907 SV% has really come on strong down the stretch and been rock solid in the net for Orono as the Spartans turned it on in the 2nd half he has been excellent in goal.

Spartans Depth- The Spartans are one of the deeper Class A teams in the State. Once they got healthy they have been able to play 4 lines and 3 pairs of defense which allows them to stay fresh and just wear out the opponent which can be illustrated in the fact that they have outshot teams 110-19 through two games while outscoring them 13-1 during the playoffs. It's nothing flashy, but Orono is just a physical and hardworking team that continually comes at you line after line until they break you down into submission.

Spartans Special Teams- The Power Play is at 26.2% and Penalty Kill is at 86.7%

#3 seed Minneapolis (12-15-0)
Minneapolis enters the 2A Section Final after upsetting highly ranked Delano for one of the bigger playoff shockers we have seen in Class A this season. The 612 crew has been improving all year after a midseason eight game losing streak. Coach Dziedzic always seems to have the city kids ready to battle come playoff time and this year is no different. They play a physical brand of hockey with some offensive flash and they will not go down easy.

MPLS Leaders- Seniors #10 Ozzie Snodgrass (18-29-47 pts) & #9 John Bebler (9-21-30 pts.) and Juniors #19 Johan Krasean (23-12-35 pts) & #27 Nick Anderson (16-13-29 pts) lead the top two lines as this team has a deep and dangerous offense. Senior #6 Bodie Dahl (5-8-13 pts) has been the leader of a defensive group that has been a work in progress all year.

MPLS Goalie- Senior #35 Mike Shroat (7-7-0) 3.16 GAA .862 SV% has had his struggles at times this year. However, he is a big game player and he has been very solid for the 612 in net during their current playoff run.

MPLS Avoiding Low Scoring Game- The 612 have an all senior 1st line and an all underclassman 2nd line to give them good offensive depth. They have even seen good contributions from their 3rd line during the playoffs. They can score with just about anyone but the key will be can they win a low scoring game as on the year they are (1-12-0) in games where they are held to 3 goals or less. They have scored 6 goals in each game so far of the playoffs so the low scoring win may not be an issue.

MPLS Special Teams- The Power Play is at 22.1% and Penalty Kill is at 77.3 %
