Pandemic usually means huge/multiple geographics (like multiple continents. epidemic is considered localized to single geopgraphic region.

But they aren't the same... it has nothing to do with the medical terms because pandemic is a medical term as well. Like what was said by earlier posters, epidemic is over a centralized location whereas pandemic is spread out over a great area.

Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

epidemic/pandemic

Post by hockeydad » Wed Feb 22, 2006 1:43 am

This is a hockey board, we just have to put it in terms everyone can understand.

There used to be just one term, epidemic. But some of the diseases felt that they were at a disadvanrage and lobbied for the Centers for Disease Control (kinda like the MSHSL) to create a new division of diseases. Thus was born the pandemic. There is a lot of debate as to whether there should be two classes. Some say it takes away from the "classic" diseases. Others say the epidemics are at a competitive disadvantage and need the separate division.

Then, there is the debate about epidemics that go out and bring imported germs into their group. These "recruited" germs generally make the epidemic stronger, and some feel it gives them an advantage over the traditional, home-grown epidemics. Some want to force them into the pandemic status.

There, does that make everything clear now???

You say pandemic, I say pan-dee-mic. You say epidemic, I say epi-dee-mic.

I say the media needs to cool down the pan/epi demic talk in general. Avian flu this, bird flu that, there MAY be a pandemic on the horizon. What, have there been more than 50 deaths from the Avian flu over the last 2 years? Well friends and neighbors, during that same time, over one million people have died from the measles. Tens of millions have died from malnutrion. Criminy, you're more likely to get killed by lightening!

Stars in heaven! We have some infected birds, better call Tom Brokaw out of retirement and make sure the public is worked up into a frenzy about this!!!

I just wish the media would show a little perspective every once in a while. Here is a great book that people should read, it's by John Stossel from 20/20, Give Me a Break: How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists

97X...BAM!!!...The future of Rock-n-Roll.
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... y at: 2/22/06 2:30 pm

It all depends on what side of the street you are standing on...

Epidemic was not frightening enough so the politicians came up with

pandemic...

The liberals use it so they can raise taxes and hire more burecrats to sit around on their butts.

The conservatives like it so they can raise the price of manufactured drugs and pay bigger salaries to the CEOs and the local guy that runs the hospital.
