Here's another update:

Johnson has opted to recognize the significance of this historic Rivalry Night event by wearing their black sweaters adorned with my name on them.

I'd like to thank them for proudly displaying "GOVS" across their chests on this special night.

The puck will drop shortly.

Como Park wins the Brawl for St.Pawl 6-2! Got there late and had to fight for a parking spot and then through the crowds for spot to sit but it was worth it.

I gotta say Govs, those uniforms are ugly, even if they did have my name on them I wouldn't want anything to do with them.

Well, the numbers are a bit "bold" shall we say, but when I saw them for the season opener against SSP, it was abundantly clear to me why that is, Chris, and quite frankly I'm a little upset you didn't pick up on this as well. The numbers are big and bold because it will make it easier for Lou Nanne to see when he's broadcasting their games from the State Tournament... although after tonight, I'm starting to wonder about that decision.

Your kids took it right to Johnson tonight and never let up. Johnson played like a bunch of idiots (loafing after the puck in their own end on a pk, letting a breakaway pass loose on a pk, the goalie not falling on the puck with a Cougar banging away on the 6th goal), but Como played well. Even when the Govs got desperate at the end and moved Joe Rubbelke from D to wing, they never really let him loose. And they have something cooking with that Bakker kid between the pipes. He looked great for a Soph. Very good glove. If they can dig up some help for in front of him, the Tri-Metro is going to have their hands full for the next couple of years.

There's no question who the better team was tonight... Johnson was never really in it.

Here, everybody who was turned away at the door of the Johnson/Como game should get a clear indication as to why. As you can see by this photo of the home team's (Como Park) side of the rink, there was simply no more room to put anybody.

Good summary Govs, this was my first time seeing the Cougars and I also felt they outworked the Governors even though it seemed like they had someone in the box half the game. The Cougars goaltending was probably the big difference though, Bakker made some great glove saves and the Govs starting goalie let in some really soft goals.

I don't have a problem with the big numbers and the big white "GOVS" on the Johnson jerseys, it's the black. I mean aren't their colors maroon and white?

Officially, yes, it's just maroon and white, but right around the time I was there - about 1990 - they added silver to all the sports' uniforms, then a couple years after I left - I think about 1995, 1996 - they added black. I think my baseball team was one of the first to get the silver, and we thought there was a printing mistake.

At one point both the silver and black were just trim colors, but in the late 90's they added a silver alternate sweater, and the black wasn't far behind. They've had some version of a black jersey for the last 5 or 6 years.

I appreciate the thought, but I'm not sure you'd find those kind of vehicles within 15 miles of Johnson.

I don't think you have anything to worry about, he was probably at a Cretin game out in the suburbs somewhere. St.Paul public school hockey flies too low under the radar for him to pick it up, I'd be surprised if he even knows that Johnson still has a team.

I will say that my neighborhood rink at Langford Park had a nice little outdoor tournament this past weekend. Kids do play hockey in St.Paul but the skilled players don't usually end up at the public schools.

Black, silver, maroon and white? How many colors does a school need? Those uniforms were hideous, they should pick up some throwbacks from the vintage hockey site maybe it would give the kids some sense of the history the program has. Then again, probably not.

Hockey in St Paul is near and dear to me, especially if the kids playing go to school at Hamline and Randolf.

If you go to Phalen Arena, they actually have a framed Herbie jersey hanging in the lobby. It's a nice touch. I'd like to see them get something hanging along with the title banners in the arena itself, but the jersey is there anyway. Actually, in terms of history, I think Johnson has always done a good job of stressing the importance of it to the kids, and the alumni has done a good job of trying to keep it alive. Wendy Anderson, Lou Cotroneo, Herb, all those guys always made themselves available. And I think the team last year really brought the point home when they wrote and published the history of Johnson hockey book.

As much as I needle us, we all recognize the history (except for the black jerseys).

Glad to hear Johnson's storied history isn't lost on the kids.
