You're obviously new to this board, so I won't ramble on.
I'm from Mpls, live in Duluth now. The first time I'll get to see STA play will be on FSN, then the Schwan Cup. I may be able to make it to this game, but every game between these two I've seen I can remember has been boring. I went to one a couple years ago that ended 7-1, I left early. It was like watching hockey players play against people with my hockey ability (none).
Yes, they lost a good (but not great) goalie to the USHL. They lost a top player to Edina. The rest of the crew is back and will be fine. They seem fine between the pipes right now.
To answer your last question (again I won't ramble) I have two opinions:
1. In a class system, if teams weren't allowed to opt up, high school hockey would be much better; we'd have two amazing tournaments.
2. In the semi-tier, semi-class system we are in, yes, I think they should opt up, for a variety of reasons.
In my opinion St Thomas will be going into this game with between 0-2 losses. Their schedule is much harder than Mahtomedi's and the game is at St Thomas. Yes, either team can win, but I'd be surprised if Mahtomedi did.
Also, 3A wasn't great last year, but neither was 5A. You can't say that just because two teams are #1 in their section they are comparable, that's like comparing a Rochester school to Roseau/Moorhead because they both have the #1 ranking.

Pretty sure the zephs have no chance... STA always plays them well and is having a good start with the loss of Larson, Crandall and Lee.... Also STA will be in the winners bracket in the Schwan Cup if I'm correct they play CDH first round? CDH is def having a down year and STA won't have a problem with them at Aldrich...maybe at highland it will be close...
Any fans of the zephs have any input besides "go zephs" and how they will have any decent chance over STA???

your right about CDH though, STA is going to blow them away, they are no good this year
Really smart thing to say pal. CDH has beat STA the last five times they have played, and STA is not accustomed to the physical style of AA!! STA is a bunch of fast flashy guys who are too afraid to play with the big guys in fear they might get hurt. STA is every players dream team to play against - small, wimpy, cocky and easily intimidated.
I guess the fact they play in a conference full of AA teams means they aren't used to AA hockey play. Oh, and the fact they split the series and conference title with Hill along the way.
P.S. Hill is way larger and plays more physical then Cretin. I agree that Cretin was the better team the past three years, but without Hickey, McDonaugh or a goalie, STA should be able to have their way with them.
