What team is going to have a better year next year with the Minnesotan recruits?

Gophers have some scoring power coming for the 2008-2009 season but still do not have a #1 goalie.

Disagree with Cabela.
I think Kangas is tough.
Agree with Goldy.
This will be moved.

I hate to say it but if you are looking at recruits from just Minnesota, the Gophers have a little better class for the 08-09 season. The edge may swing back to UND for the 09-10 season with Kristo, Fink, and D. Mattson scheduled to arrive. Granted Schroeder and Budish should also be on campus for the 09-10 season, but I give the edge to UND for 09-10.

Schroeder is coming in 2008, but overall I agree. I would give a slight nod to the Gophers in 2008 and a slight nod to the Sioux in 2009, although the difference is negligible and I could see it playing out either way by the time those guys are done.

North Dakota could lose a lot going into next year: Oshie, Chorney, Finley, and possibly Duncan are all flight risks, and Lammy is graduating after seemingly 13 years on campus. Minnesota loses a fairly average senior class and both Wheeler and Stoa are possible departures.

It will probably be another year where both teams are fairly even all year. I think UND takes a small step back and Minnesota takes a step forward.

I saw something that said Schroeder is going to be there in '09. Then again, I suppose everything can change with early departures.

He was a 2009 for over a year but this past summer he decided to accelerate and come in '08. Assuming that goes to plan he will be on campus this fall.

You have to think the Gophers will be a better team. The Sioux will (probably) lose Oshie, Chorney, and Finley. Lamoureux, Kaip, and Bina are seniors. If those three juniors stay, which is highly unlikely, then they will compete with Minnesota but I don't see it happening. There is about a 5% chance Oshie stays and that's all you need to know. As far as Duncan leaving, not going to happen. He went undrafted and is playing really average this year.

Schroeder actually started this school year as a senior since he already made up the necessary work to advance a grade. He isn't doing anything like Aaron Ness is where he is trying to finish up extra course work this year in order to hit campus next fall. Schroeder is a 2008 recruit. I am not sure why Heisenberg hasn't updated that on his recruiting list.

I'd say they are just about even with perhaps a slight edge going to UND. We'll have to wait and see.

Not in this thread but dont forget the husies

Post by huskyhawky »

I know SCSU is long forgotten especially as they usually do not land the minnesota recruits but they are now coming and Motzko is getting some MN talent. To name a few we have Jordy Christian, Jared Festler and Drew Leblanc coming to town next year some others coming to town are Ravendalen, LEE, oliver and Hanowski! I know one thing and that is that we do not fear the gophers, we just need to catch up to the talent that ND puts out year after year.

No team "fears" another on that level. Even the worst teams don't "fear" the best.

"Catching up" in talent shows you really don't have much of a grasp of the recruiting landscape. They'll never consistently "catch up" in that regard because they don't have the kind of selling points and drawing power with the elite recruits that programs like UND, Michigan, and Minnesota have.

SCSU will have its good seasons here and there. All of those smaller schools (UMD, Mankato, etc) manage to have a few good seasons every five years or so. Their problem (much as it has been for those other schools I mentioned) is it very tough to maintain it since they don't draw elite players as consistently as the elite schools do. It generally seems like when one of those three smaller in-state schools (Mankato, UMD, SCSU) are having a "good year", the other two are down. There are exceptions but that seems to happen quite a bit.

Inside College Hockey shows the following...

MINNESOTA
Josh Birkholz
(2009) F R 6-0 170 3/28/91 Maple Grove, Minn. Blake School
Nathan Condon
(2009) F L 6-1 185 5/29/90 Wausau, Wis. West H.S.
Mike Dorr 2008 F R 5-10 175 12/28/88 Roseville, Minn. Des Moines (USHL)
Jake Hansen 2008 C 6-1 170 8/21/89 White Bear Lake, Minn. Sioux Falls (USHL)
Seth Helgeson
(2009) D 6-4 185 10/8/90 Faribault, Minn. Faribault H.S.
Nick Leddy

Sam Lofquist 2008 D 5-11 155 3/15/90 Faribault, Minn. U.S. NTDP
Brandon Martell 2008 D 6-2 195 12/15/88 Elk River, Minn. Tri-City (USHL)
Taylor Matson* 2008 F 5-10 160 9/16/88 Orono, Minn. Des Moines (USHL)
Aaron Ness 2008 D L 5-9 155 5/18/90 Roseau, Minn. Roseau H.S.
Nico Sacchetti 2008 F R 5-10 175 8/21/89 Virginia, Minn. Omaha (USHL)
Jordan Schroeder (2009) F R 5-8 165 9/29/90 Prior Lake, Minn. U.S. NTDP

Jake Youso
(2009) C L 6-0 171 6/8/90 International Falls, Minn. Green Bay (USHL

Schroeder coming in 2008 would be a huge plus for next year :D
Don't forget Lofquist & Martell adding offensive skills to the D set at the U next year, besides Ness... I do not expect many of the current blueliners except Fairchild contributing to this team next year, even the Mr. Hockey kid from AV has not done well this year, we'll see...
I also like the Sacchetti (Virginia) & Mattson & Hansen coming in w/ Schroeder on the front line to add scoring depth...
The scoring punch up front and on the d-line will be improved next year with this bunch coming in and the growth of Hoeffel & Stoa (injury) for next season... I see positives going forward for the Gophers... I like the way Kangas has stepped up, but I think Lucia has to get another goalie in very soon, because I don't see Mr Frazee helping the Gophers in the future...

Go Gophs :D

I give the edge in this year to Minnesota

I hear they are reqruiting this squit that has 100 points, and he is a 1ST YEAR! this kid definatly has a bright future. I believe he is from Shakopee, I hear he will transfer to eaither Benilde or AHA. If I were him I would personally go to Holy Family I hear they will be good in the next years.

It should be a very close season. Just like the 06' 07' season between these two teams. (If anyone recalls the Wheeler goal to move the Gophers to the Frozen 4) The gophers are getting some great talent, like Aaron Ness and Jake Youso, but the Sioux have had a great team for the past few years. They won the the National title in 200, but the Gophers also won the title to consecutive years in 2002 and 2003. So it should be a great season between these two teams!
