Serious question, what did Joel Otto do in HS?

Mike Ramsey at #27.

Since I can't seem to figure out who the Top 25 are, I wonder if they are going to throw a wrinkle in by having Krissy Wendel or something. Sometimes these lists are to generate discussion and that would certainly do it.

Did Cammi Granato suit up for the Burnsville Varsity? She certainly went on to a lot of success.

How about Jack Carlson or Mike Peluso as we pay tribute to the Enforcer role? Maybe there are a few more old-timers from the early days of Minnesota HS hockey.

Yeah, you are right about that.
Otto, no, HS wsa not that great.
Sargent, I wiould liek to think so, but I am thinking I am missing someone and am leaving room for someone more recent.

Then again, I may be off on 5 of them.

Two names from the early 70's:

Seems like there needs to be another goalie in the top 25 besides Ikola. Doug Long (Johnson) hasn't been mentioned. I think he still holds the tournament record for most saves (all games).

Warren Miller was outstanding at SSP ... played well in the tournament ... 4-year Gopher (including two nat'l championships) ... and had a nice NHL career.

How about all the Carlson brothers? They were very good players at Virginia. I remember going to some Blue Devils games as a kid in the 80s and their record book was filled by Carlson brothers (and I am not meaning record penalty minutes! ;))

From what I am seeing on the 100 list is a great number of players that deserve to be there. Now, as I can relate to the older players and the current players, what I am seeing is a list, that is not nesessarily in the order of 1-100. I think many of the older players are difficult to compare to the current player. I will give just one example: Alan Hangsleben and Gary Sargeant were as as talented as any of the defense of today.

So, I guess they all deserve to be there, but in any given order.

Right year ... wrong team ... Brad Shelstad comes in at 26.

Somebody named Bob Young is at #25. I don't know who that is. Makes me wonder if someone from the 1972 Silver Medal team makes an appearance. Some Minnesotans were on the team like Bruce McIntosh and Craig Sarner.

A Hill guy, I thought Langevin in 1972 was better, but a good player, none the less.

Herb Brooks on this list?

Post by northern_guy »

Herb Brooks at #100? I think he was a great/the best coach, but as a player was he deserving to be on this list? The sport has grown tremendously since his playing days in both the number of players and caliber of players. Seeing him on this list makes me feel like he was put here for nostaligic reasons and to make people feel warn and fuzzy. The article supporting his admission on this list of the best isn't very convincing.

“Herbie was a hard working guy,” McCartan said. “He would get his points, but he wasn’t a prolific goal scorer. He was a good skater and a great team man.”

“He would be the first to tell you he may not have been the best player on his (high school) line."

The list is titled the 100 Best High School Hockey Players....sorry, I just dont see it here but then again how do you leave his last name off this list I guess. I am not here to argue who should be ahead of who, but looking at once place above Herb makes my point at #99. Locker was a great high school player....what did he do past high school?...not much that is notable, but he was a GREAT high school player and deserves to be on the list.

Why is EP irrelevant? Isn't that the team with 2 out of the last 3 state championships and 2 out of the last 3 Mr. Hockey's? Another Rau hater I guess.

im guessing that he is saying ep hockey is irrelevant because he is the all time leading score of a high school team that besides those last 2 championships in 3 years has really done nothing and hassent produced many great players.

Ok meaning I agree with the accomplishment working in his favor. Yes outside of the past few years EP hockey has been irrelevant. No, not a hater. Get a grip and learn to look past your provincialism.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Nick Bjugstad. It makes me wonder if neither Nick nor Kyle Rau will make the list at all.

If Kyle Rau isn't on the list, why have one? He played on two state title winners, carried more than his share of the load as a senior, and provided some of the most memorable moments in both the Section and State finals.

Are you serious?

Bjugstad is obviously a very good player, but it won't surprise me at all if he doesn't make the list. Sometimes there's a difference between being a great HS player and a top NHL prospect.

Considering the titles won by Edina East, is there possibly one of their players missing? There are a lot of players from the 70s that made the list in general; only Mike Lauen has made the list so far.

What kind of HS player was Bill Nyrop? Maybe he gets on from the late 60s Edina teams.

A nice write up on Phil. Even the part where he scored three goals in 27 seconds against East.
