How many players advance passed 54's and what is the breakdown of forwards defense & goalies they select?

The last two years MN has sent 14 players to the Adv 17's camp in NY:

1 G
5 D
8 F

10 forwards is nothing but trouble. If you've ever been a coach, a giant pain in the ass. I can't think of a single good reason to have 10 forwards.

Final 54

Post by scienceguy » Mon Apr 16, 2012 5:11 pm

Rosters are out. Can anyone tell me how a kid who is injured and couldn't play make the final 54, in addition T.J. Moore only played part of 1 game and he also made it. Incredible.

science guy- I will tell you. The rosters were picked before the tryout even began. The rosters are picked off HS performance and names they recognize. Every year the same thing happens. Two years ago Mario Lucia went all the way to the NY Camp without ever even trying out in the 54s. Rumor has it he laid a BIG egg in the festival, suddenly came down with MONO so couldn't do the 54s and there he was in NY. Get used to it. These tournaments are purely MONEY MAKERS!

I like ttt's response because it does happen but the truth is really because the player does/may deserve to be there. Someone wants to see the player in the process and believes they should be there.

final 54

Tell me then why the invite letter indicates that if you cannot participate through the whole process don't register.
I am disgusted with the process. Its not how you play, but who your dad(grand dad) is, knows or played hockey with.

Do you think injured players should be ignored?

TTT is correct. You could look at last years 16's roster of the final 54 and really the only surprise was the kids that came from nowhere and were selected that didn't try out. Haven't gone through the list to count the changes year-over-year, but I'd guess it's less than 10 new kids in the 54. Top talent is clear and easy to identify, but there's potential in the middle where you can't tell me the same kids should retain all the spots they did. It's unfortunate the status quo remains where players never get the chance because (1) they don't have the right name, (2) they're not from the right school (ie: EP, DE, Roseau, Edina), (3) their HS coach isn't active in promoting, or (4) the family doesn't know or play the games with coaches/program directors/"evaluators". It seems the message for kids that make 15s or 16s is to find a reason to not tryout if you're "in the middle" to keep your spot. Politics at it's finest, but clearly this isn't a surprise.

I don't have the patience to go through the forwards (tonight) but based on a quick count, there were two defensemen (Ausmus & C. Lewis) from the 16s roster last year that wouldn't technically be considered based on where they're playing now so only two "new" replacement defensemen by default for the 17s roster. Goalies seemed too perplexing with some similarities as defensemen but also some HS goalies that did not appear to tryout or make the 17 roster (any insight here?). No other "attrition" at the defense position. Really? Is the division of talent between D #10-24 (or #18 & #19 for that matter) that clear where every returner was deserving of a spot?

Yes, injured players should be ignored. If they were unable to play this past weekend, they probably would not be ready to play by Friday.

injured players should be ignored. By definition they did not try out and therefore should not be considered, the same should be true for those that did not tryout at all but ended up on the list. There is alot of talent in this state and it isn't just at EP, Roseau, Edina or DE. Give someone else the opportunity.
