It's a great accomplishment to have your name on the list. I counted 7 guys that played over a 1000 games, that is unbelieveable!

Whats not so impressive is that only 46 guys have a "+" and 120 have a "-". Three are over 100+ (Ramsey, Langevin, and Holmgren) while 7 have 100- in the negative zone.

Congrats to all for making the list though. =D>

That list is very interesting, but one minor quirk makes it slightly less than comprehensive: because they go by birthplace, it omits some people born elsewhere that are thought of as "Minnesota" players, but includes some born here and raised elsewhere. Paul Ranheim and Dave Maley were born outside Minnesota and aren't on the list; Mike Farrell (not the actor who played B.J. Hunnicutt, who actually was born in Minnesota also) is listed as having been born in Edina and playing 13 games in the NHL, but I've never heard of him. Hockeydb llists him as having been born in Indiana and playing at Providence in college, so I'm guessing he didn't spend a lot of time here. Basil McRae's kid is also listed, but he never played youth hockey in Minnesota.

One thing I find interesting - for as much hockey talent this state produces to the NHL level, we don't turn out top goalies. 6 goalies have played more than 100 NHL games, the most recent being Damian Rhodes.

That is hard to believe. How many have made it from NTDP?

When other goalies are maturing and starting a junior career, ours are playing in about 20-25 games at the high school level. Many teams have schedules that hardly force the goalies to make a difficult save in up to half the games. Goalies in other parts of the country and world start facing shots against older, better players when they are high school aged and I think that makes a big difference. It is tough for a Minnesota goalie to make it even to the USHL.
Adam Hauser was drafted high and lasted a whopping 2 periods in the NHL, giving up 6 goals. Other goalies who have had a cup of coffee must just be callups due to injury as many of them have less than 10 game careers.

WHA

Post by F14 »

Does this list include WHA list from 72-79?

Important as they were paid good wages.

Regarding goalies: Canadian goalies leave home at 14 and are playing double the games during HS years 15-18

All MN goalies must go to juniors after high school to get more games and exposure as NO college or NHL scout is taking a goalie unless they are 100% sure he is ready

ELITE Fall League Helps but only 8-10 goalies play at that before HS season.

Quale and Parker as juniors have a leg up for playing and going to HS and then Quale winning state. He played great and is big time.
The other goalie at BSM Jecha played Elite but only rotated during HS season (after Quale's suspension) but in my opinion there were many other goalies his equal who didn't play in ELITE League

it helps to have Pauly and Rogalski goalie coach for Elite League (ex BSM goalie) and Russo (BSM asst and Director of Elite League)

Great Bantam A goalie should go to BSM next year as Quale a senior. Will get good exposure

Jecha didn't play, Quale was the BSM goalie in Elite. They both tried out but they only took one.

I'm not even looking at it from a MSHSL perspective. Even if the kid skips high school and plays at Shattuck, USHL, etc. there are hardly any goalies from the state. Let's face it, a goalie in Canada can't play CHL until he's 16 - no different than a kid leaving at 16 to play in the USHL. For some reason, the Canadian can make it - and as you said the MN kid can hardly make it to the USHL at 18 let alone 16.

Does anyone know - was Bitzer, Koop, Franke invited to try out at Ann Arbor even?

We all know how goalies are...perhaps we just aren't nutty enough in MN. At least that's what we agreed on at the Tourney this year (with our buddy, a former goalie, now scout).

Top goaltenders aren't uniformly distributed across Canada either. Quebec leads the way. Any discussion on why Minnesota produces so few elite netminders should look into why so many come from the French speaking area of the Great White North.
Be kind. Rewind.

Noticed Ryan Kraft wasn't on here. Or was he actually born in ND?

But the Canadian kid is leaving at 16 with teams who might want him to be their #1 from age 17-20. He is playing against bigger and stronger players everyday of the season as opposed to a MN high school goalie.
Our 18 year old goalies are done right now and maybe playing in some meaningless spring tourney while Canadas 18 year olds are getting ready to play 20-30 playoff games in Tier II or Tier I junior leagues.

Exactly. It appears our 16 year old goalies aren't good enough to make it to the 16-20 team which would allow them better competition. I think we're saying the same thing.

Massachusetts has really gone down in the past 15 years, they used to be #1 in this metric.

Any idea why?
I'd just be guessing as to why it has declined.

Hockey boomed there after Bobby Orr arrived on the scene.

Now that the Bruins finally won another Cup perhaps there will be another uptick there.

Add JT Brown to the list:

J.T. Brown - W - Lightning The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed college free agent J.T. Brown to a two-year contract.
"He has all the top characteristics we look for in a player, including high skill and compete levels," GM Steve Yzerman said. "We're glad he chose to play for the Lightning and we look forward to getting him in the lineup as quickly as possible." Brown notched 24 goals and added 23 assists in 39 games for the University of Minnesota-Duluth during his sophomore season in 2011-12. He is expected to join the Lightning later this week and will probably get into a game before the season ends.

Congrats to JT, I hope he does well for the Lightning.
