My top 5:
5. Lakeville South over Duluth East's dream team, 2012
4. Moorhead over the Edina Fab 5, 2009 (in my opinion, a greater upset than LVS/DE--that Moorhead team had zero D-I players)
3. Minnetonka over Hill in 4 OTs, 2010
2. Grant Besse over Hill, 2012
1. Eden Prairie over Duluth East on the Rau championship dive in the 3rd OT, 2011

I would have to say the top two are Duluth East/Eden Prairie in 2011 and Minnetonka/Hilll-Murray in 2010. The amazing thing about teh tonka/Hill game is that Hill totally dominated in regulaiton time and then Tonka turned it around and dominated in the overtimes plaus teh fact that the two teams went at each other for about ninety minutes of game time and there were NO penalties in the game.

You are correct, I looked it up. Ironically though Benilde was one of the four teans in the semi's both of those record years:karl(east) wrote:I believe last year's semis actually surpassed that.MNHockeyFan wrote:Friday, March 7, 2008
Edina beat Benilde 5-4 in O.T. - still the all time attendance record for a hockey game in Minnesota.
2008 - 19,559
2012 - 19.893 (+334)

It was announced as 19,893, but the MSHSL press release says 19,197. I'm not sure which to believe.MNHockeyFan wrote:You are correct, I looked it up. Also, BSM has been in the three sessions with the highest attendance since 1995 (and probably all time).
Mtka - HM
My squad was on the losing end that night, but it still is the best State Tournament game I've ever seen. I sat in the HM corner. Both teams played with great skill, speed and talent. No penalties. It was 5 on 5 up and down for 86 minutes. Goalies Tim Schaughnessy and Jim Kruger were fantastic. They stopped everything from the 2nd period on until Erik Baskin put in a backhander for Tonka in the 4th OT.bardown27 wrote:2010

Hill-Tonka OT semi-final. First period was always our worst that season. So when the the first ended tied 1-1, I knew it looked good. The second period in particular, Hill did everything but score. No penalties, just two great teams that came to play hockey. Great officiating, they did their jobs and that means they weren't noticed. The winning goal wasn't anything special, but it was a clean goal, nothing flukey or controversial. It's the only time neutral fans expressed any sympathy to Hill. that's kind of interesting, but I'm glad it happened once.
A distant second was the 2008 Hill-Roseau semi. Defending champ Roseau comes in undefeated. A record (to that time) crowd. Defeating the beloved Rams, we cement our reputation as the most hated team in the state for another generation. I didn't want to leave the building.

I agree with the DE v EP title game. The fact that East had to run the gauntlet of OT games starting with the section final through the State final was an unbelievable thing to be a part of. To put it this way, East was as close to being knocked off before getting to St.Paul as they were to being the last team standing was awesome. To cap it off with a roller coaster 3OT game was unbelievable. On a side note, let's not talk about the DE v Lakeville game from last year eh?

I would agree with this list.....I still watch this every once in a while.....How is #3 doing on the interference calls this year?karl(east) wrote:My top 5:

1. I really enjoyed watching the HILL-ROSEAU game a few years ago, probably because of the hype of Aaron Ness and how Hill just physically took it to him.
2. The Eden Prairie over Duluth East championship and Kyle Rau's heroic championship goal. I think I more remember how phsical East was throughout the game but EP just kept chugging away.
3. Besse popping 5 gino's to single handidly win the state championship in an inprobable year that someone will make into a movie someday about Jack Jablonski...it will be a tear jerker

I will always remember this from JoJo Jeanetta's point of view. One of the finest unsung goalies in MN takes an OT loss in the state 'ship on a garbage goal (no disrespect to Rau, he scored for one reason -- will power, which he still has in spades).Tenoverpar wrote:

He never got the respect he deserved -- maybe because of the forward firepower of that team -- and this sort of cemented it.

They already did this. It was called Friday Night Lights, and it was spookily done six years ago.Tenoverpar wrote:

Seriously, has anyone ever mentioned the eerie similarities?

I agree with all of these incredible games never going to forget that Benilde-Edina game. Jacob Meyers who was only a sophomore stood on his head all game but eventually Everson squeezed in that game winner. My favorite state game in which I've attended to this day.
One game that should at least recieve an honorable mention and happened just out of the five year time span was the 06-07 Rochester Century upsetting of Hill Murray 6-5 in OT. Joe Faupel was a sophomore playing with two of the top seniors in the state (Knoepke and Grimstad) and had 4 goals including the GW in OT. Only a first round game but it was incredible to attend that game and watch "lowly" 1AA end Hill Murrays run that year. Another one of my personal favorites. Century ended up third after losing to eventual state champion Roseau in the semis.

Well JoJo did mishandle the puck which led to the garbage goal.Shinbone_News wrote:I will always remember this from JoJo Jeanetta's point of view. Does 5 years include 2007 or are we talking from this point? POINT OF CLARIFICATION PLEASE!
5. Grand Rapids vs. Burnsville (2007): The last 3 minute comeback was super crazy.
4. Hermantown vs. Mahtomedi (2010): The emotion of one minute winning to the next minute losing was super duper crazy. I still remember it seeming like Mahtomedi was sending an all out attack in OT because they knew we either have to win it & win it quickly or we'll losing this game. I still loved the go big or go home mentality though.
3. Edina vs. Benilde (2008): Seemed like Edina was going to take it when they opened up a two goal lead in the 3rd, but BSM tied it up quickly and the action was non-stop. Meyers stopping chance after chance from Edina, who had the majority of chances, but then BSM had a 2 on 1 on the PK in OT that Budish was able to backcheck & cause disruption before keeping the puck in the zone on a clearing attempt later in the OT to start the set-up for the game winner, which Everson must have been stopped on at least 4 times from the goal crease, or at least it seems.
2. EP vs. Duluth East (2011): The effort put forth by Duluth East & the resiliency by the EP seniors that they weren't going to be denied their place in HS history was awesome to watch. The only one of these three that I wasn't in attendance at.
1. Minnetonka vs. Hill-Murray (2010): I give this one the edge over EP/East though because it seemed like it had more scoring chances throughout the overtimes. I still remember sitting next to the Hill-Murray bench & Lechner smiling at his players & his players smiling back throughout the OT's, almost like the coach was teaching his players "Win or lose, enjoy this because you'll remember this for the rest of your lives." Of course they probably didn't think that at the time, but we sure do.
