Can Minnesota High Schools claim the national championship?

Post by frederick61 »

Just posted a game story on the Benilde/SSM game played last night. It asks that question and gives an account of the game played. It can be read at:

No. Just like beating the team during the regular season who ends up winning state doesn't somehow make you the state champ, them losing to another team during the season doesn't diminish their post season success.

Could they? Likely. It would be interesting to see what would happen if some MSHSL teams were invited.

My impression is that players would rather play in the Minnesota tourney in front of 15,000 fans then in a national tourney in front of 1500 fans; but the same players wonder how their team would do in the national U18 tourney.

The U18 could be a problem. Benilde's Besse was a third year peewee when he played at Wayzata and could actually be 19. If so he could not play in the u18 tourney.

But Minnesota could host a pseudo national tourney and have four top high school teams play four top national teams. It could be a big draw if it got some media attention.
