So is EP a "slacker"? Having asked that question, they'll no doubt come back and win the Lake Conference.

Which of course, begs an additional question - as the Lake conference teams begin beating up on each other in a few weeks, how much will that cost each team in the rankings? E.g., if each team goes 4-4 in the Lake, that would presumably allow some teams (such as BSM, LN, HM, Rose) to move up the rankings and possibly surpass the Lake teams even though perhaps they're not better than the Lake teams. Time will tell.

Perhaps we need a AAA bracket for the beloved Lake Conference and all their All Star teams..the rest can be AA or A

Agreed. Let's take the Lake winner and crown them State Champion. Then we can throw a tournament for the rest of the AA dreck out there just for drill.

I agree with T.O.P, all the Lake talk gets to be a little self righteous. However, it is hard to ignore the elephant in the room. If you watch ESPN, you getting exhausted listening to all the Alabama, Florida State, Oregon football talk, but they are the teams to beat and of relevance for the end of the year big picture. (disclaimer: this is a comparison at best, no need to tell me this is not national TV). When Alabama and Auburn play, everyone else is made to feel irrelevant and gets the impression that nobody cares about the UNLV-Montana State game, which obviously is not true to those schools, parents and fans. But will who gets the attention change?

We are all proud schools, towns and parents and I would actually like to see some more blogging and input from the so called not top ten teams. I love hearing about players, towns and rivalries I am not aware of. And yes, there are many relevant other teams...so parents, step up, grab the Mic..and let us know is going on in your conference. I know I for one would enjoy it!

Hmmm, I'm sensing a bit of resentment out there...or maybe it's just sarcasm :?: :wink: Thankfully for most everyone else, there are six sections that can be won without having to worry about the Lake Conference teams.

P.S. And the Lake's dominance doesn't come close to what's been the case in women's D1 college hockey, where a team outside the WCHA Conference has never won a NCAA title.

Yes, I think we can all agree on the WCHA's dominance, but then there's not nearly as much fun in debating that or throwing out other opinions, is there?

You are correct, sir. Just threw that out there, for comparison's sake.

As a point of reference, since the MSHSL went to two divisions 12 years ago, Lake Conference teams have won the AA title 5 times, which of course includes the last 3, all by Minnetonka. The other two, won my Eden Prairie, were in 2006 and 2008, which makes the Lake 5 out of the past 8.

Which teams look to have the best chance of making sure they don't go 6 of 9? Right now it would seem to be Hill-Murray, Roseville, BSM...maybe one of the Lakevilles? Probably a dozen more that have a shot at it - there's a long way to go yet!

Sounds great if you think the conference is over rated or over hyped, I would imagine we could get the Lake conference teams to split up the sections they are in and each go in a different one, then your favorite team can see for themselves if these teams are legit. Heck I'm sure they would even give you first choice of which team you would want in your section if it meant they didn't have to play each other to get to state. I've seen 4 of these teams play this year, and if they were in different sections, my guess is at least three of them would get to state, and there would be a strong chance of all 5 of them being there if they didn't have to play each other.

I think that the Lake is peaking this year, as most teams will be losing some top players, particularly goalies, after this season. Still, with BSM in 6AA, it's entirely possible that only one Lake team (winner of EP/Edina) will even make it to State, so the conference will not appear nearly so dominant in the final LPH rankings. They probably will look better in KRACH, though. Still, it's probably unprecedented to have all the teams in a single conference ranked in the top 7, even if temporarily. With its feeder system, the Lake will likely always be fairly strong, but this year's peak is quite fun to watch what unfolds.

I'd say its possible no Lake team will be in the state tournament, or should Bloomington just give up now? As for 6AA, I'd say BSM's chances are worse this year than last. Tonka may not be quite up to last year, but Hopkins and Wayzata are better. Getting through 6AA may require wins against 3 really strong teams.

I agree 6AA is a crap shoot this year. The three prior years it was a two team race for the 6AA Championship and then the hands down favorite to win state. This year has more parity and will be a 4 or 5 team battle to see who survives. Lots of great hockey to come. Even then I am not so sure the survivor will be the favorite to win state.

After watching BSM, I think they have the most talent, but the girls play this weaving style that keeps the puck to the outside and they don't take a lot of shots. If they fix this, and maybe they can't or don't want to, they will be pretty tough.

Warroad rising to #5 from #6 this week is laughable. SSP should be down around 9 or 10.

The assumption was that EP or Edina will cruise through section 2AA. I think Bloomington may disagree. Is Chaska/Chanhassen still in 2AA? They are no pushover either.

If they have the most talent they aren't showing it in games. A great team, but no better than Tonka, Hopkins or Wayzata. Right now I think any Lake team can beat any other, and that holds true if you add BSM to the mix.

A sure looks interesting this year. I wish EP had some games against EGF, TRF or Red Wing. Especially Red Wing. My daughter played some B youth hockey and probably wouldn't mind another shot against Red Wing.

LSQRANK 22-DEC-2013 Minnesota High School Girls League Class A & AA

LSQRANK is a numerical ranking system that performs a least squares best fit
of IN-season data of performance based measurable attributes between sports teams. This program adapts adjustment computation methods developed for spatial data analysis to the science of sports performance ranking. Algorithms are employed to compute composite margin of victory scores (MOV) and observation weights that are used to build the reduced Normal Equation Matrices. The solution of the equations is an iterative solution using the Cholesky solution algorithm. The solution to the system of observation
equations produces:

(1) LSQRANK, a relative ranking order of the given teams in the league;
(2) GD, a modelled goal differential based on rank & score;
(3) avgSS, an average strength of schedule of each team;
(4) Wi, a report of the standardized residuals of the observations.
