Hopkins 2, Maple Grove 3

In a game that could well have important Section 6AA seeding implications, it was Lauren Kaufmann's goal at 3:56 into overtime that propelled the 18th ranked Maple Grove Crimson to a 3-2 upset win over the No. 1 ranked Hopkins Royals at the Maple Grove Community Center. Maple Grove took a 2-0 lead into the 3rd period on goals by Summer Thibodeau and Taylor Wente, but Hopkins rallied in the 3rd to make it a 2-2 game. Grace Bizal scored less than a minute in, and Jilliane DeYoung then knotted the score at 2-2 with just over two minutes to play to send it into OT. Shots on goal were very even, with Hopkins holding a very slight 36-34 edge.

Only 5 of 33 called the upset, and there no correct scores.

And in our final reported score this evening, as reported by Minnesota-Scores.net, it was:

St. Paul United 1, Achiever Academy 7

The 4th ranked Class 1A Aces were the overwhelming favorite to win this game, by 31-1-1 margin. Several came very close to getting the score right, but it was not to be...so most everyone adds a single point.

Heading into Friday night's three games, including a huge section 8A battle between the No. 1 and No. 2 in Class A, u12dad takes the lead:

1. u12dad - 8 points

2. ERhockeydad - 7
fishfreak11 - 7
clutterbucket - 7
Maverick2000 - 7
Silent But Deadly - 7
rascalbrock - 7
capitalpride - 7
MNHockeyFan - 7
blondegirlsdad - 7

Knight7 - 6
wolfman - 6
D6 Girls Fan - 6
MIYY4U - 6
backspin - 6
hockeyfan87 - 6
spars46 - 6

Hill-Murray, ranked No. 4 in Class 2A, scored a goal in each period, and Leah Patrick stopped all 14 shots she faced in the Pioneers 3-0 shutout win over the Class 1A South St. Paul Packers at Aldrich Arena. Kenzie Prater has a goal and an assist for Hill-Murray, who fired 41 shots at Packers' goaltender Sydney Conley.

Our panel, with an average score of 4-1, was near unanimous (32 of 33) in picking the Pioneers to win. But only one - Misterright - predicted their 3-0 shutout victory.
Interesting that Misterright nails this one while mrleft was the only prediction for a Packer victory... mrleft was the solo pick for a SPU victory last night as well......the left hand certainly doesn't seem to know what the right is doing.??? :D

Haha, I think the left hand knows exactly what the right hand is doing...just hasn't been all that successful up to this point. Maybe they need a few more hands?

(Just kidding, of course, all in good fun here lol!)

P.S. Now up on the Hub. Centennial's Gabbie Hughes shut out the Skippers with 27 saves, and Phaylen Meyer with the game's only goal on just 9 Cougars' shots.[/quote]

MNHockeyFan I think you have this backwards. Meyer receives the shutout, and Hughes with the only goal :D

I think you are correct, powerplayer - my apologies.

And congrats to ALL of the Centennial players and coaches on their big win!

No surprise: I'll be out this evening watching a hockey game! Start time is an hour later than normal, so my next update will be delayed about the same amount of time.

Go Gophers!

P.S. For any of you who might be interested the Gopher women's team makes a rare TV appearance this evening on FCSC (Fox College Sports Central). They are playing rival North Dakota in Grand Forks at 7:00pm. If you have Comcast look for it on Channel 263.

It's pretty late so I'll just go with the scores and the point totals:

Thief River Falls 3, East Grand Forks 1 (as reported in a forum post - not officially confirmed)

The No. 1 ranked team in Class 1A pulled in 19 of the 33 total votes, but of the 19 only hugo_lucas had the 3-1 score.

Benilde-St. Margaret's 4, Irondale 1

In this one the No. 5 ranked team in Class 2A attracted 28 of the 33 votes over No. 10AA Irondale, and three nailed the 4-1 score: Maverick2000, rascalbrock and AAA Dad.

Stillwater 1, Roseville 4

A minor upset as No. 19AA beats No. 12AA. Only 9 of 33 picked the Raiders to win, but no one predicted they would win by a 3 goal margin, let alone by the exact 4-1 score.

So, heading into a busy 5 game Saturday lineup, here's the updated Leaderboard, again assuming the 3-1 TRF/EGF score is correct. With 4 points in tonight's three games, Maverick2000 jumps into the lead; blondegirlsdad, while going 3 for 3, takes 2nd; and a huge logjam develops at 9 points, with 10 tied for 3rd:

1. Maverick2000 - 11

2. blondegirlsdad - 10

3. ERhockeydad - 9
fishfreak11 - 9
clutterbucket - 9
Silent But Deadly - 9
rascalbrock - 9
capitalpride - 9
u12dad - 9
Antagonist - 9
RailingWizardofOZ - 9
AAA Dad - 9

13. Nordic - 8
D16Dad - 8
wolfman - 8
MNHockeyFan - 8
D6 Girls Fan - 8
hugo_lucas - 8
backspin - 8
spars46 - 8
[CW also with 8]

21. mnhockey3535 - 7
Knight7 - 7
sinbin - 7
MIYY4U - 7
hockeyfan87 - 7

26. Six tied at 6

32. Two with 5

Edina 1, Hill-Murray 1 (OT Tie)

4th ranked Hill-Murray was favored by 20 of our prognosticators compared to just 10 who liked Edina, but it didn't matter because the two teams tied, meaning all 30 came up empty. HOWEVER, their were THREE who correctly predicted a tie, those being Silent But Deadly, 36Guy and AAA Dad. Coincidentally (I think) they all thought the score would be 3-3 - so no bonus points - but they do pick up a point on everybody else, so SBD and AAA Dad move into a tie for 2nd along with blondegirlsdad.

Dodge County 4, Buffalo 0

The result sure wasn't surprising, at least for the 25 of 33 who predicted Dodge County would win, but the margin of victory was unexpected. Nobody had Buffalo being held to without a goal, and the average predicted score (CW) was 3-2.

Could Dodge County be the best girls' team to ever come out of Southern Minnesota? Offhand I can't think of a better one.

I agree with the Dodge county comment as they work very hard and play team hockey. This team lost there could be best player, Defensemen Katie Robinson whom is a national camp U18 kid with offers from the top colleges already as 10th grader, early in the season to a torn ACL in a 3-2 game at Benilde. It is great to see how the team has adjusted without her and speaks volumes for these kids and coaching staff..

Congrats to all of the 10th grade verbal commits. I think it's awesome that they are getting recognized like this.

Blake 2, Minnetonka 4
30 of 33 picked the No. 3AA Skippers to win, and there were four who also add the bonus, having also predicting the 4-2 score: ERhockeydad, FlyingWarrior, sinbin and RailingWizardofOZ.

Totino-Grace 2, Mound-Westonka 0
An upset according to our group - only 9 thought the Eagles would beat the higher ranked White Hawks. There were no correct scores, and in fact everybody had Mound-Westonka scoring at least one goal.

Does anyone have the score of the Lakeville North vs. South game?

P.S. Including the Lakeville game there are four games left during this extended Week 13+, so there's still a chance for those tied for 2nd...just need to get a little lucky with the scores!

From Minnesota-Scores.net:

Lakeville North 4, Lakeville South 2

29 of 33 favored the higher-ranked Panthers to win this battle of the Lakevilles, and there were three who also got the score right: Nordic, Knight7 and RailingWizardofOZ. The Wizard moves into the 2nd Place position "all alone", just one point out of 1st. With three games left here's how things stand:

1. Maverick2000 - 15

2. RailingWizardofOZ - 14

3. ERhockeydad - 13
rascalbrock - 13
capitalpride - 13
blondegirlsdad - 13

Achiever Academy 3, Irondale 4

Ms. Hockey semifinalist and Brown University recruit Samantha Donovan scored two goals and added an assist to lead Irondale over Achiever Academy at Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine. Irondale opened the scoring late the 1st period and added three more to take a 4-0 lead in the middle of the 2nd before the Aces would counter by scoring the next three to close the gap to just one with just under a minute to play, but could not get the equalizer.

23 of 33 picked the Knights to win but most thought it would be a close contest, with an average score of 3-2. Nimrod and spars46 were the only prognosticators to get the 4-3 score correct.

Warroad 4, Roseau 0

Warroad got goals from four different players and Dani Knott stopped all 16 shots she faced to earn a shutout victory over the Rams at the Roseau Memorial Arena.

Similar to the Irondale/Achiever Academy game, 22 of 33 picked the Warriors to come out on top, but with an average score of 3-2 most thought it would a much closer game. Nobody predicted the Rams would be held scoreless and surrender four in the process, so no correct scores...

Final game tonight:

Orono 3, South St. Paul 0

No. 6A ranked Orono scored a goal in each period to beat No. 8A South St. Paul at Wakota Arena. It appears that a real key to the game came in the 2nd period, when South St. Paul got whistled for six consecutive penalties, and Orono was able to take advantage of a five on three power play opportunity. Stephanie Knight, with a goal in the first period plus a first assist on that second period power play tally, was the only multi-point scorer for the Spartans. Orono goaltender Sophia Sterling made 24 saves to keep the Packers off the board.

Our panel was very evenly split on this game, with a slight majority (17-16) liking the home team Packers to win. The only prognosticator to guess that Orono would win by 3-0 was mrleft!

So with just one game remaining, to be played Wednesday night between Minnetonka and Stillwater, our final 2013-14 regular season contest draws to a close. Maverick2000, who went 2 for 3 this evening, maintains his one point lead. With a correct score on Wednesday, either ERhockeydad or RailingWizardofOZ - but not both - could finish in a tie for first.

In the final game of the 2013-14 regular season, which puts a wrap on our season-long series of weekly contests, it was:

Minnetonka 2, Stillwater 0

Sydney Baldwin and Michaela Rothstein scored goals in a 48 second span in the 2nd period to propel the No. 4 Class 2AA Skippers past the No. 13AA Ponies at the St. Croix Rec Center. U of M recruit Baldwin also assisted on Rothstein's goal for a two point night in her last regular season high school game. And Hannah Ehresmann was perfect in goal, stopping all 26 Stillwater shots, to record the shutout win.

In our last regular season contest, with Tonka's win all but one pick up a point, but nobody gets more than one as there were no correct scores. Maverick2000 thus becomes our "Week 13+" winner with 18 points:

1. Maverick2000 - 18

2. ERhockeydad - 17
RailingWizardofOZ - 17

4. clutterbucket - 16
