Hmmm....Tech beats SCC pretty big....anybody see the St. Cloud Times yet? Tech's goaltender Flanagan states:
"It feels great just to blow them out. They shouldn't be on the same ice as us."

Good grief....with a program like Tech, you would think the coaches would "coach" the players on appropriate comments to make to the media. I have to say, there are some very cocky players with Tech this year....well, more cocky than usual....

Saw the paper, and the game. SCC outshot Tech almost 2 to 1 and yet only got one goal. It looked to me like the SCC team is divided and may have been bitten by the senior bug. However, you can't say that a team doesn't belong on the ice with you when they can outshoot you that badly. The good news is that Flanagan is not a good goalie in general, and will let the Tech team down when it really matters. Tech is not a bad team though, (stating the obvious) they worked their hearts out against SCC and it payed off. (SCC might have been just a bit too confident, and Tech had revenge on it's mind.) Tech did deserve the win with their work ethic, and SCC earned the loss late in the game. It looks like Johnson has some work to do with his team.. But there is still time, and in general SCC is a good team, and will do OK this year.

Sauk Rapids, on the other hand is a VERY good team, if they would stay out of the box. They played a rejuvinated Apollo team and even though the score was 4-2, it wasn't that close. I predict SR taking the championship this year, and it will be because they're the best team in the tournament. Those Green and Gold boys will pick Flanagan apart and make him run home to his mommy. (just kidding)

Apollo is a new team. They've found their style, and it's a tough hitting - grinding play that is actually kind of interesting to watch. Although they won't win a bunch of games this year, they will earn some respect.

Sartell, what a blue-collar team. It's too bad that they'll meet SR today as they might be able to play with any other team in the tournament.

The Bismarck / Eveleth game sure didn't show anything. Either they're both decent teams, or they're not. We'll see today when they each meet the local teams. And then poor Litchfield.. but they can only go up...

Just curious here, but why would they have SCC and Tech play each other in the first round and have Bismark Century meet Eveleth?

You take the two teams from last years final and have them play in the first round. How did they decide on the brackets?

my thoughts....

Post by 2AhockeyOldTimer »

SCC played a pretty good game. Had some very costly breakdowns that Tech took advantage of nicely.

Like someone above me said, tech is a very cocky team. Swanson and Meinz were far and away better than the players tech is throwing on the ice now. But the difference is, Swanson and Meinz weren't so cocky.

Where does Buttweiller get off kicking an SCC player in the groin multiple times?

Where does Lahr get off punching numerous SCC kids? Lets face it, Tech isn't what they used to be.

Flanagan played great, but what's with that comment to the paper? Is he an idiot? He gave SCC no credit for, in my opinion, dominating the game.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, although its only class A, SCC has had better post-season success in past years, and that will continue this year. (8AA is not exactly a dominating section)
2A

That's right, I don't believe that Tech has EVER made it to the state tournament. And it won't happen any time soon.

In the defense of Tech, they have some pretty good kids on the team (personality) that you don't hear about. They won the game, and you can't take that away from them. It's just too bad that they have some of the personalities that will make a program look bad. One of those personalities is the coach, so what do you expect??? (I know how much 2A likes Hommerding)

I agree scott

Post by 2AhockeyOldTimer »

They have some really good kids. Meemken is a nice guy and had a couple goals last night. Buttweiller is an awesome guy, in my opinion, but just does some stupid stuff on the ice. ITs too bad because he is a great player as well. They have many more great guys on their team, but some of their on-ice antics are ridiculous. And I still can't get over what Flanagan said to the paper. Was he aware that his team was dominated in every aspect of the game except score (which i guess is the only thing that really matters)?

It was probably something that Hommerdingaling said in the locker room and he just repeated it.
2A

funny call...

Post by 2AhockeyOldTimer »

In the SCC vs. Bismarck Century game, the funniest call i have ever seen occurred.

A Bismarck Century player was winding up to take a slap shot and SCC's sam Nielsen laid a nice hit on him. The ref called a penalty on Nielsen for interference. The ref knew he made a wrong call and refused to talk to SCC coach Eric Johnson about it.

This post really doesn't matter as far as anything whatsoever, except the call was just so blown it was humorous...its surprising because the refs reffed a great game.

REFS

Post by IRC »

I think it is funny that you have said that the refs were reffing well...I don't think that the refs are any good in that tournament...I have seen so many bad calls it is ridiculous...You were bringing up something that you thought was funny and I think that this situation is funny. It started with a St. Cloud Tech player hurt first and the trainer and the coach and about 4 or 5 of their players were surrounding the hurt player in the corner. Maybe a minute later an Eveleth-Gilbert player was hurt and then the refs brought out the Tech trainer and the Bears player wasn't moving at all...So the Bears head coach went out there to see how his player was and the ref sent the coach back to the bench telling him he had no busines out there checking on his player. I think that is totally messed up...Anyone else heard of that happening? Cause I sure haven't

I was at the Sartell/SR game and there was a whistle blown when Sartell pulled their goalie to get a 6th man out at the very end of the game to tie it up. Ref blew the whistle ready to call too many men on the ice and then realized what Sartell was doing. Sartell was already in SR's end making a run for it when he blew the whistle. Ref error so puck had to be dropped at center ice. Cost Sartell a chance and the way the game was played by Sartell, they just may have capitalized.

Another ref story: A Sartell player's stick got caught between the glass during play. When play was finally stopped, the ref went over to the stick, tried to force it out but decided to just break it off instead and then lift the glass up to get the rest out.....Rumor has it that was a $200 stick he decided to break. Not a smart move. Even Sauk Rapids fans were chanting "Bill him! Bill him!"

Re: Granite City Classic Semifinal Scores: SR 2 - Sartell 1

Post by puckhead89 »

As to the SR/Sartell game, I would agree that it was a clean game but would disagree that SR played "down". SR is a very good offensive team and got 40 plus shots to the net. They maybe looked to you STCplaya that they were playing down but I think it was that they weren't playing goon hockey. They still found the box 6 times, but it was a step up from their last game with Sartell where they spent 15 minutes in one period in the box. And more penalty free than the SR/Apollo game the night before.

Give the Sartell boys some credit. They played their tails off and had a good chance to win that game. Sartell's goalie was remarkable and kept these boys flowing. I don't think I was far off the mark in my earlier posts about what I have seen in Sartell....even those of us that are SR fans would have to admit it was a good contest between the two clubs. No excuses, just a good game.

For the second year in a row Tech gets beaten by a local single A team. Sauk Rapids pretty much took it to Tech. It looked like Flanagan was up to his normal playing capacity and was taken to the cleaners by SR.

SR was not totally dominant, but they did play well enough to own the game for the most part. I wonder if the Tech team will say that SR wasn't worthy to be on the ice with them??

Way to go Sauk Rapids!!

That game was the epitome of poetic justice. Flanagan gives up 7 goals to a class A team. Flanagan kept smiling up at SCCs team and waving, obviously SCC was in his head. When SR scored on Flanagan, "we're not worthy" was my favorite cheer. Along with Class A hockey.

On a side note...4 of Tech's 6 losses this year are to Class A teams.

They shouldn't be on the same ice with us.
2A

That Tech team is totally not worthy after beating you low life, no class, losers 5 to 1? Hah SCC your a joke... You didn't beat Tech in every aspect. You outshot them with some brutal shots from the point which weren't even close to going in. Hey Russel, nice chant on pull the goalie it was really funny...I recall your terrible 'talent' got you pulled Vs. Tech.

Oh yeah, and the fact the 8AA sucks? Haha whoever said that must not have a brain because doesn't Moorhead make it to the FINALS almost every year?

Your all a bunch of no class, daddy's money, non talent losers.

When you got punched in the face (by TECH) you don't go run your mouth, you realize you suck and keep your mouth shut.

Post by scottparker »

So WildFan, you must have learned to respond from the same guy who coached Flanagan, unless you are Flanagan....

OldTimer and I have both said that there are several great kids at Tech. If you're not embarassed by your goalies response in the paper, then you are truly not one of them. SCC is a pretty good team, and SR is a very good team, in the single A world. Tech is a fair team at best in the AA ranks, and middle-of-the-road in 8AA, which is a good section in it's own right.

It was justice that Flanagan got shelled, as for a normal year the SCC kids probably would have supported their buddies instead of the cross-town rival SR.

What I don't understand, and explain it to me if you can, is why can't Tech and Flanagan be proud of the fact that they beat SCC, and leave it at that? The numbers show that SCC was in the game, except that they couldn't get by a hot goalie. That's cool, and part of the game. If someone looked at the numbers without seeing the score, they would have assumed that SCC had won. We saw the real Flanagan against SR, and we saw a HOT Flanagan against SCC.. I wonder which one will be playing for you come section playoff time????

OK, I say this subject is dead, let's let it go and move on.

ONE MORE THING --- Congratulations to Sauk Rapids on a very will played win.
