Polls are now closed for Class A!

Looks like we have 27 participating - 6 more than last year, so pretty good. I hope to post recaps after each session, beginning later this afternoon.

Class A – Upper Bracket
Alexandria 2, #2 Blake 3

Carly Bullock scored a goal in each of the first and second periods to give her Blake team a 2-1 lead after two periods, and Sylvie Wallin scored what proved to be the game winner with just over 5 minutes to go in the third for No. 2 seeded Bears. Melissa Drown scored her second goal of the game just 28 seconds after Wallin's made it 3-1 to close the gap to one, but Alexandria could not get the equalizer in the remaining minutes. For the game Blake had a decisive 36-17 edge in shots on goal, but Alex's Amy Jost proved hard to beat and kept her team very much in it until the final horn.

In our contest this was a much closer game that most anticipated; in fact, the average predicted score was 5-1 Blake. D16Dad was the only prognosticator to even come close to getting the score right, at 4-2. All but one had Blake winning and pick up 3 points each.

Class A – Upper Bracket
New Ulm 2, #3 Red Wing 7

Ms. Hockey finalist Nicole Schammel scored three consecutive goals for the pure hat trick to lead third seeded Red Wing to a 7-2 win over New Ulm. Schammel also assisted on three of Red Wing's other four goals to finish with a 6 point game. Also playing a major role in the Wingers's win was junior forward Reagan Haley who netted two goals to go along with her two assists for a 4 point afternoon. Brittany Denn scored both goals for the Eagles.

Our panel predicted a Wingers win by a 25-2 margin and a 5-1 average score. Although many came close, newcomer ted2you was the only one to predict 7-2, and at 8 total points goes up by two on most of the field, heading into this evening's two lower bracket games.

Class A – Lower Bracket
Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 1, #1 East Grand Forks 8

Haley Mack exploded for four goals to power East Grand Forks into the Class A semifinals. Mack - just a sophomore - also had a primary assist on Riley Koberinski's second period goal for a five point night. East Grand Forks had a commanding 37-11 margin in shots on goal.

The lopsided result was widely expected by our group, not surprising for a top-seeded team in a quarterfinal matchup. All but one had the Green Wave winning, with the group as a whole predicting an average 6-1 score. But Maverick2000 was the lone prognosticator to say 8-1, which enables him to join ted2you atop the field with 11 points each, two ahead of most everyone else.

After one period it's St. Paul United 1, Proctor/Hermantown 0.

From the audio broadcast it sounded like the Mirage had the edge in play until SPU's Lauren Boettcher scored with 3:14 left, and that goal changed the momentum for the balance of the period.

SPU goes up 3-1 on goals by Lea Groebe - her first of the season - and Joie Phelps. Sophie McGovern with the lone Proctor/Hermantown goal, on the power play.

Class A – Lower Bracket
#5 St. Paul United 5, #4 Proctor/Hermantown 2

Joie Phelps scored two goals, including a clinching, short-handed tally with 24 seconds remaining, to lead her 5th seeded St, Paul United team past the 4th seeded Proctor/Hermantown Mirage. Phelps also assisted on SPU's first goal of the game for a three point night. The game was evenly played throughout, and in fact Proctor/Hermantown finished with a 27-23 edge in shots on goal.

Our panel favored the No. 4 seeded Proctor/Hermantown Mirage to win, but not by much: just 15 to 12 and by an average score of 3.0 to 2.8. But no one guessed the final 5-2 SPU winning score, so no bonus points go to the 12 who had SPU coming out on top.

Our leaders after the first day:

1. Maverick2000 - 14

2. Sparlimb - 12
clutterbucket - 12
hockeybozo - 12
Nimrod - 12
fishfreak11 - 12
Silent But Deadly - 12

12. ted2you - 11

Class AA – Upper Bracket
Burnsville 1, #2 Hill-Murray 4

Hill-Murray got first period goals from Jess Bonfe and Rebecca Zarembinski, and that was all they would need to defeat the unseeded Burnsville Blaze. Zarembinski also contributed three assists, and her three points led all scorers. Kenzie Prater and Brittney Anderson netted the other two goals for the Pioneers, who outshot Burnsville 43-11.

All but one predicted the #2 seeded Pioneers would advance, and we had no less than SIX who predicted the score to get the two point bonus: Sparlimb, mnhockey3535, capitalpride, blondegirlsdad, hockeyfan87 and D6 Girls Fan.

Class A - Consolation
New Ulm 3, Alexandria 4 (3 OT's)

What a marathon this one turned out to be! McKenzie Revering scored the game winner at 5:20 of the third overtime period to win it for Alexandria, which advances to the Consolation round final. Shots on goal reinforced how even this game was, as Alex had a very slight 42-39 edge.

Class AA – Upper Bracket
Andover 2, #3 Eden Prairie 4

After a scoreless first period, the Huskies and Eagles traded goals in the second, which ended tied at 2-2, despite Eden Prairie controlling the majority of the play and outshooting Andover 15-3. Then early in the 3rd Charly Dahlquist, the Eagles' leading scorer throughout the season, scored her second goal of the game to put her team up 3-2. Naomi Rogge added an empty netter with 11 seconds to go for the final 4-2 score.

Another widely anticipated result for our panel, with all but one (are you sensing a trend here?) picking an EP victory. And this time there were three getting the score right, including another by "rookie" ted2you - nice job, again! The other two getting the bonus were veteran prognosticators Nordic and FishEye.

Class A - Consolation
Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 1, #4 Proctor/Hermantown 4

Game summary from MSHSL site:

"The Dragons of Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato were outshot 31-20 and didn’t score until early in the third period, so Proctor/Hermantown eighth-grade forward Karie Lenard’s first of two goals in the second period proved to be the game-winner in the final 4-1 outcome. Junior Jillayne Gilbert scored the first and last goals for the Mirage, the latter into an empty net with 1:24 remaining in the game. Her first goal, also unassisted, was scored just 57 seconds into the game. Senior goaltender Kylie Hommerding earned the win for Proctor/Hermantown and made 19 saves. The Dragons’ lone goal came short-handed just 46 seconds into the third period, scored by senior Sarah Kivisto. The Mirage (19-10-0) will play the Cardinals of Alexandria on Sat., Feb. 22, for the consolation title.
Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato finishes the season with a 10-19-0 record."

3rd "4-1" game in a row for HM. Made it easier to guess the score. Hoping for a 4th btw. Is it safe to assume I'm going to beat Mr. Left?

Looking at the spreadsheet, I think that's a safe bet for everybody! I guess I need to take some responsibility for failing to explain that, unlike golf, in these contests you try to shoot for a HIGH score.

Class AA – Lower Bracket
Roseau 0, #1 Benilde-St. Margaret's 7

University of Minnesota recruit and Ms. Hockey finalist Kelly Pannek scored 3 goals and assisted on three others to power the No. 1 ranked and No. 1 seed Red Knights past the Roseau Rams in today's third quarterfinal matchup. The unseeded Rams came out very strong and controlled much of the play in the first period, which ended scoreless and the shots even at 5 apiece. But BSM stormed back in the second - scoring four times, all at even strength - and added three more in the third as they dominated the action, in part due to five minor penalties assessed, all on the Rams. Also having a strong offensive game for Benilde was Caitlin Reilly, who finished with a goal and three assists.

In our contest, the pattern set earlier continues, with all but one [ ] predicting the higher-seeded team would win. There were several predictions of 6-0 and 8-0 scores, but no 7-0's...so this game had literally no impact on the standings posted earlier - just add 3 to everyone's point total...with that one [ ] exception.

Our group expects this evening's second game to be a much tighter affair, having predicted an average score of 3-2 Lakeville North.

Smart group! Now 2-2 and headed for overtime. Both the play and shots on goal have been very even.
