level of play?
I have been watching a lot of high school hockey in the years past and it seems that this year does seem to have as much talent as last year or years before. Is it just me?

Re: level of play?
I would tend to agree. The skill level I've seen on the FSN games, just not the same as it was from years back that I recall.

Last years was daaaaamn good. This year did seem down from what I had seen on FSN, but the AHA/Moorhead game looked pretty crisp to me. Very fast, physical and very well played.

Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

Talent
I would tend to agree as well. Watching AHA, there is talent in depth though. Consideration to the fact that several players that would be playing with their HS this year are playing either juniors and or in Ann Arbor.

Regards.
mnhockey39

Re: Talent
I have had this discussion with several people this season, and there does seem to be a concensus that the level of play this year is not as good as last season!

yeah, i was just wondering if it was just the games i have been catching or if it really is that this years talent pool is a lot weaker.

Re: re
the class of 2005 (last years seniors) is one of the best classes in overall talent in the past few years.. they had soooo many good players.. oshie, lee, wheeler, the list goes on and on... 2005 was a very good class
there'd be no hockey if the water wasn't FROZEN

Re: re
I have seen a few games at the rink and on TV and there definitely isn't as much to work with as last years, seems like every team last year had at least a few good players.

Re: re
Does anyone notice the players this year appear to be smaller and just a notch slower compared to the players a few years ago?

oh yeah for sure, it seemed like last year we were watching USHL games at times, A or AA.

Good, I am not the only one out there.

Re: level of play?
I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks that the league is not the same as last year. Just seems so SLOW at times.

Re: level of play?
does anyone know why this is, because i have also noticed a lack of discipline in the style of players this year, not as much back checking and just lack of heart with the lack of talent. I know last years class was one of the best to ever come out of minnesota, but it shouldn't look this bad.

Re: level of play?
high school hockey is down quite a bit in my opinion. not sure why. it's probably just a cycle. i see many players as just average high school players who are supposed to be their teams stars. can't help but think that they wouldn't have even played just a few years ago on quality teams such as moorhead, white bear, elk river, hill, holy angels, etc. the truth is that the majority of players are just average high school players.

Old timers
You guys sound like a bunch of old timers who think "the game was better back in the day".

The athletes today are better then the athletes of the past. They train more often, and better. That can only lead to more skill and athleticism. Then add to that the equipment is better. What you are experiencing is the exageration of the mind as it get older.

A funny story to show how the mind exagerates as we age.

I played town team baseball and one of our long time fans was telling us about past players and how good they were. He claimed that a player from the past could throw a ball over the backstop from centerfield. From his description the throw would have been about 300+ feet. Now I was a pitcher and had an above average arm. I went out and attempted that throw with a couple teammates with pretty good arms. We couldn't even get it to the backstop much less over it. According to this fan the home runs were longer and then always seemed to go out on a frozen rope. Everytime, image that.

Go back and watch some old games and then reevaluate your ideas.

Re: Old timers
PAMESH...If you reread the original post I think you will find the poster comparing this year to last year...not to days gone bye. On another point, I think the fact that you or your teammates could not even get your throws to the backstop only proves the long time fan CORRECT!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... >wild77 at: 1/6/06 9:50 am
