International Falls Broncos

Post by ifallsfan » Wed Dec 14, 2005 8:14 pm

Anybody,

I see the Broncos have not started out real well this year, although most of their games have been close. I live out of state and wonder if anyone can give me a take on this years team. Are they any good ? Any stand out players ? Will they do anything in the playoffs ? Any news on the town have not been back since 95'. What a year that was for IFalls hockey.
Anyway I appreciate any info. Is there a place I can listen to a game on the net. Will get my hockey fix any way I can get it.

Bob

They just took 8th in the Rochester Tournamnet, losing to 2 section 1A schools in the process.

Sophomore Jake Youso is a bright spot for the Broncos and shows some promise in the near future for the team. His line seems to be 90% of their offense so far this year. They've played Virginia and Hibbing close at home, but have pretty much struggled the rest of the season. I figured they would've gotten a couple wins this week in Rochester against what many thought as a less-than-stellar field of competition. Instead, they went 0-3 and got buried by Albert Lea in the finale. I guess the best way to sum them up at this point is that they could be a spoiler, but not likely a state tournament contender.

I watched them play Albert Lea. They aren't very strong.

What number is Youso? 22? He seemed to be there best player, but nothing special..........on the other hand, if he's only a sophomore, then he's definitely ahead of the curve. 7 and 9 were alright. 26 was tiny.

Goaltending didn't appear too strong. What do the bantam and pee wee levels look like, is there help on the way, or will I. Falls sink to the level of the Eveleth's and Greenway's?

Is Jake Youso related to Alan Youso? He was a very good baseball player about 10 years ago.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... 5hockey at: 12/31/05 12:11 pm

Yes, Youso is #22. I couldn't tell you if he's related to Allen or not. My guess is probably a cousin or something. IF isn't that big of a town, so I doubt there are two seperate Youso bloodlines up there.

Broncos will be fine by the end of the year. Not state bound because of the competition (Hermantown, Hibbing and Virginia), but prepping for 07 and 08.
After that they remain very competitive. Pee Wees are having a good year.

The bigger question is 7A, like 8a (and perhaps all the real rural areas), how do you remain competitive. How many young boys does it take to run a good hockey, basketball, and wrestling program. My guess is that sooner or later something will have to give. (I may be worng, but the Falls may have dropped wrestling already.)

Elliot,
In addition to asking how many boys it takes to make all winter sports programs work, we also must look at the "specialized" athlete.

The 3 sport athlete has all but disappeared, the 2 sport athlete is nearly extinct now that people concentrate on one sport, athletes are being spread too thin, particularily is smaller towns.

The jock that used to play football, hockey and baseball may now only play football.

With good athletes only picking one sport, every other sport is suffering.

Think of the options kids have:
Hockey, basketball, wrestling, swimming, football, soccer, cross country, track and field, baseball, golf..................I've probably missed a few.

I believe this is the downfall of smaller communities, sports programs. If a town small town has only 5 good athletes in each grade level, the odds of all of them playing hockey and forming a strong team is not good.

I'll stop whining, because it ain't going to change, and hockey is just as much to blame as every other sport.

I35 - you are right.
Youso in the Falls was a very, very good baseball player. Now he plays golf. I am not sure if all the off-season hockey influenced that decision, but one sport athletes are the thing, with multiple sport ones diminishing. Rural or city. In the city with a school pop. of 1500 or more - one sport becomes more of a necessity because of the competition. So both big and small have adversity in terms of the numbers creating one sport athletes.

But again, it is bigger than you and I or one family. Will it change? Sure, everything does, but probably not in my life time.
