"eye of the tiger" is best played by the GRHS band. Although my favorite GRHS band song is "Championship".

Playing at the DECC sometime in the 80's... The pep band played "Louie Louie" between whistles. I was the goalie, when play started, I was still singing in my head and dancing a little. Derek Plante dumped one from center ice and I bobbled it and it went in.

We still won thank God.

From then on I hated music during the game...and did my best to tune it out.

A slightly different take...

Post by Subzero » Wed Jan 04, 2006 12:55 pm

Growing up and well into my middle aged years, I 've always appreciated energetic warmup music from either the band or a playlist. However, since becoming the father of a child with some sensory issues that include sensitive hearing, I've changed my tune on this.

It is hard for me take my now 7 year old son to indoor athletic events. When I first started taking him to games, he would cover his ears and look panicked any time the scoreboard buzzer went off or the PA system was blasting. His first Twins game at the Metrodome was tortorous for him as we were sitting in the upper deck and the pre-game music was just blaring. Even with earplugs, the best we could do was to roam the corridors. I would never dream of taking him to a Vikings game there. The level of artificial noise they pump into the Dome for the Purple games is way over the top.

My son has adjusted a little to it over the years, but is still apprehensive about going to games. When we do go, we have to strategically pick our seats away from the bands, speakers, and scoreboards. Mind you, I am not advocating a silent arena. An energetic level of music still enhances the competitor and spectator experience of a game. I just want the arena/stadium music guys out there to be aware that there are kids/people out there like my son who have a difficult time dealing with loud and sudden noises. For their sakes, perhaps consider toning it down a bit. Thanks!

Have to agree with ST, Nelly's Heart of a Champion was played during warmups of the Moorhead/Warroad '05 tilt. Talk about setting the tone!
