Greatest comebacks in Sectional/State history

Post by Videoscout » Mon Feb 04, 2002 10:14 pm

I'd like to hear short stories about some of the greatest comebacks in any play-off situation in Minnesota. One that comes to mind was at the 1977 Section 8 Hockey Tournament in East Grand Forks.

Tiny Mt. St. Benedict (Crookston) faced Bemidji (defending Section 8 champs at the time) in the quarter-finals and quickly fell behind 4-1. The first half of the second period saw Bemidji score two more goals to take a 6-1 lead with about 8 minutes left in the period.

Mt. St. Benedict put on an offensive show that led to five unanswered goals to tie the game at six apiece with over 5:00 left to go in regulation.

In overtime ... Crookston was called for a penalty and was skating short-handed when they scored the game-winner to ice the victory.

What really made that night memorable was the following upset that ensued. Fergus Falls upset heavily-favored, Dave Christian-led Warroad 4-3 to set up a semi-final game against Mt. St. Benedict, which Crookston won 7-2.

Crookston lost in the championship game against Roseau who was the # 1 ranked team (25-0-0) at the time. If Crookston were to have beaten the Rams ... it would have been one of the greatest Cinderella stories ever to play in the State Tournament.

It's a shame that Crookston had two high school teams from the early 1900's through 1981 (when Mt. St. Benedict closed its' doors). The private school was allowed by the MSHSL to compete in 1975, so they were in the league for only six years (they had no team in 1981 ... when they closed their doors that spring).

There was another comeback that took place just one year later when Lake of the Woods came back from an identical deficit (6-1) to beat Moorhead in the quarter-finals of the Section 8 tourney in Thief River Falls that year.

How about it guys? You must have some great comeback stories out there!! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

In the 1991 section 3 tournament, Hill-Murray was playing Forest Lake. At the time, HM was something like 17-0 all time against Forest Lake, and Forest Lake was somewhere around 4-17 on the year. The game went along as script with HM pulling out to a 5-0 lead in the third period. Then something weird happened, and Forest Lake started scoring. First one, then two and it kept going. By the time the 4th goal went in for FL, Hill's goalie was shaking. And sure enough, FL was able to tie the game. I remember specifically these guys for Park-Cottage Grove sitting in front of me giving us trouble the whole game that FL was going to pull the upset. The first overtime came and went and these guys finally decide to go sit on the other side of the rink and cheer for FL. I sure was hoping that was good luck and luckily in the 2nd OT HM scored the game winner and went on to win the State Championship that year. From almost losing to a 4-17 team after being up 5-0 in the 3rd to winning the state championship. Quite a turnaround...

I don't know if anyone was at this game, I just remember them talking about it on WCCO's coverage of the tournament in 1988. But in the Section 2 finals, Cretin Derham-Hall played South St. Paul in a very close game. And SSP scored the go ahead goal with something like 12 seconds remaining in the third period. CDH somehow takes the faceoff, goes into the zone and scores the tying goal, and then wins in OT. Sure would have been a great game to see. Were any of you at that game?

Was anyone at the 1992 Section 3 semi-final between Hill-Murray and St. Paul Johnson? To this day that was still the greatest single game of High School Hockey I have ever witnessed. The Coliseum was more packed for that game than any other game I've seen there, even section finals. I showed up 20 minutes before the game and was stuck standing the entire game. I have never seen more odd-man rushes in a game either. Johnson came out on fire and quickly went up 3-0 I believe, and then in the second period, which I'm sure is still a bone of contention for Johnson fans, the refs called Johnson for something like 7 consecutive penalties, and HM went on a continuos powerplay for most of the 2nd period. They scored 4 goals in that span and took a 4-3 lead and I believe Johnson tied the game late in the 2nd and they traded goals in the 3rd. Both teams had goals in OT waved off as HM finally made it through with a goal in the 2nd OT. The game was very reminiscent of the Hastings/Blaine game for intensity. I am very interested to hear if anyone else was at this game and if they agree it was as good as I say...

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub33.ezboard.com/usparlimb.show ... parlimb at: 2/5/02 7:26:49 am

Sparlimb,

First of all you're taxing my memory, which usually only runs on 1 cylinder nowadays. I was fortunate enough to attend both the SSP-CDH and Hill Murray-Johnson games that you mentioned.

The SSP-Cretin game WAS incredible due to the finish. Very similar to the SSP-Edina West quarterfinal in the '81 State Tourney, where SSP went ahead with only seconds remaining. Edina West took the face off and scored on a long slap shot, but time had expired-maybe <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"> . The Cretin game was stunning for the SSP fans, to have a certain victory snatched away and then to lose in OT. They didn't react too well.

The Johnson-HM game was simply an epic; back and forth, lots of goals, great saves, officiating controversy and 2OT. It was certainly one of the best games I have ever attended. I was sitting with some friends from work who were from the Johnson area and when the game ended they and the rest of the Govie fans were devastated. It was certainly one of those "Twilight Zone" games, where it's so incredible and so full of everything you can hope for, that you sometimes have trouble remembering some of the details even immediately afterward, because there was SO much to see.

If my memory serves correctly, the hero of that CDH-SSP game was Chris Weinke. He was a soph. at the time. I don't remember if he had the tying goal, the OT goal or both.

Bizarre moments in hockey games

Post by Videoscout » Tue Feb 05, 2002 1:15 pm

In 1972 at the Fargo Coliseum Crookston Cathedral was playing against Fargo North. The game was back and forth and ended up tied in regulation.

In overtime the teams battled to what appeared was going to end up being a tie, when Fargo North iced the puck with :01 second left in overtime.

The ensuing face-off was in the Fargo North zone and just about everyone was headed to the exits, thinking that the drop of the puck would end the game in a tie.

The centerman for Cathedral was a right-handed shooter and the face-off was to the goaltender's right. So the center yielded the face-off to his left-winger (who obviously was a left-handed shooter).

The referee dropped the puck and Gordy Przybylski slammed it into the net before it reached the ice.

Cathedral - 5 Fargo North - 4 (OT 7:59) -- <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

Roseau vs. Burnsville

Post by Green and White Fan » Tue Feb 05, 2002 3:51 pm

A game that was very exciting for those in attendance, was the state consolation championship in 1984. Roseau trailed Burnsville by 4 goals, 2 different times in the contest. Late in regulation Roseau made the comeback complete when they tied the game at 8 to 8 and sent it to O.T. Sean Bucy ended the game early into the overtime, giving Roseau a 9 to 8 victory. This still stands as the highest scoring game in state tournament history. The thing I will always remember, is that the Civic Center was packed as the game was ending. When Roseau scored, the entire arena aside from one corner section was standing cheering for the Rams.

Green & White ... wasn't there another State tournament game that Roseau was involved in in 1979 when Aaron Broten, Glen DeMoto, Chip Ammerman and the boys put up high numbers? Was it with Edina East? Something like 9-7 or 9-8? Which I believe Roseau won.

How about this memorable game. Moorhead 15 - Roseau 0
(either 1994 or 1995).

Now that's unforgettable. -- <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

By the way ... I was at all three games mentioned (yours & my two)

I think in Class A hockey this has to be one of the best combacks. I mean Unranked Princeton against #3 Red Wing down 4-1 after the second and they come back to tie it. And then Red Wing Prevails on a luckey tip.

Comebacks

I think a good comeback was in 99 when Sauk came back from 3-0 to beat Lourdes 4-3 with a game winner with about 48 seconds. That's better than Princeton vs. Red Wing.
