Best team to have never won the state tournament

Post by MajinHockey » Sat Jan 18, 2003 11:11 pm

Maybe this is impossible to gauge, but there have to be a few teams that have had great teams and either got tripped up in sections or had a bad state tourney. Or, maybe this is a lame thread and nobody gives a rip, we shall soon see.

best to not win?

Post by jr » Sat Jan 18, 2003 11:46 pm

There are probably endless teams that could fit in this category. I have a group that was pretty impressive that never made it to the State Tourney.

1978 International Falls team: 11 D-1 players, 3 NHL, and 2 Olympians.

Goalie: Bob Mason, UMD, NHL, 84 Olympic Team, Wild Coach

Goalie: Dave Laurion, Notre Dame, US Olympic Festival

Forward: Gary Sampson, Boston College, 84 Olympic Team, NHL

Forward: Mike Bolstad, Providence

Forward: Steve Reyes, Illinois Chicago Circle

Forward: Bill Mason, UMD

Forward: Tom Herzig, UMD

Forward: Gene Rohl, Air Force

Defense: Todd Paveleck, Ferris State

Defense: Bruce Raboin, Providence

Forward/Defense: Neil Sheehy, Harvard, NHL, US Olympic Festival

There were also 3 other players that played D-2 or 3 hockey on this squad. This team played in one of the best games I have ever witnessed in Roseau. Roseau won 4-3 when Neal Broten scored from his waist late in the game to win it.

77 Team had Kevin Constantine in net and they lost a thriller to Rapids. Constantine played at RPI, NHL, and later coached Pittsburgh, San Jose, and New Jersey.

79 team was loaded as well but Jon Casey had 40 some saves in the region final to ice it for Rapids.

I know there are plenty of other teams that were great that could easily make a claim for this one.

St. Cloud Apollo...99'

Post by MNfan » Sun Jan 19, 2003 1:06 am

I would say another good team that never made it to the state tounament would have to be St. Cloud Apollo. The odds were defantly against them. Having the Rams from Roseau having the number one seed in the state almost the whole season. Apollo came into this game ignoring all the headlines. Although Roseau was able to prove themselves worthy, as they came out with the win 2-1 in OVERTIME. What if Apollo would have won that game. Would they have been the State champs. I do believe Roseau walked threw the entire state Tournament beating Hastings For the crown 4-0. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

I personally thought the 1994 Moorhead Spuds were the best team in Minnesota that year.

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat"> - "... but Petey may disagree!"

Elk River

The 2000 squad with Paul Martin that loss to Osseo in section semis was also a very good team. A top two team the entire season and #1 when they lost.

I agree with Elk River as well as the #2 team in state that year Eden Praire lost to Edina that year in like 5 or 4 OT's It made for a surprise team like Blaine to win state that year. I wonder if that has ever happened before when both the #1 and #2 team in state both didnt make it that was a wacky year.

How can a team with 27 appearances have absolutely no state titles. I'll tell you why, section assignments. Lets face it, tourney appearances can be handed to you. Sections are always lobsided. Southern sections have traditionally been weak, with the middle of the state coming in a close second.

South St. Paul has had some very good teams. But not 27 tourney appearances worth. Imagine, Holy Angels accomplished last season in their second appearance what South St. Paul has failed to do in 27 tries.

I think my favorite stat like that is White Bear's remarkable record of futility in first round games. I think it's 0-15 or something like that (not counting WB Mariner).

Also, I was at that EP-Edina game, and that was just awesome. Those EP fans were chanting "season's over" at Edina with 10 seconds left and a face off in their own zone. I bet they wish they hadn't, because the Edina guy had just a beautiful snipe from the point. I think it was Heigl, but it's been awhile, so I'm not positive.

The undefeted 1978 Roseau Rams lost to Edina East in the semi's 2-0. This team was loaded with talent. Aaron, Neal and Butsy all had over 100 points that year.

The 1977 team wasn't bad either coming in undefeated also but lost to Edina East in the first round.
Ram Hockey

I can't recall the exact year, but in the late 80's (86-87-8<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)"> Back with Larry Olimb and Chad Erickson, Warroad went undefeated and got insanely upset by Moorhead in the first (i belive) round of the section tournament.

Best not to win

Post by rustyblade » Mon Jan 20, 2003 8:51 am

I will say the 1960 Roseau team not even going to state was a "shocker." Runner-up in '57, Champs in'58, Champs in '59, undefeated through '60 'til they were upset by Warroad in the semis of the region. Warroad did not go to state that year. Roseau were Champs again in '61.

Warroad and So St Paul come to mind as the two best programs not to win the AA championship.
As far as teams go,the 1973 SSP team was undefeated and returned a lot of guys from a very good team that went to state the year before and was very competitive there. They were ranked #1 all year in the polls but got beat by Sibley in the section finals.

Best of the rest

Post by joe lulic » Mon Jan 20, 2003 11:08 am

ladybyng, There is more to the SSP story than a weak section. Sure, they have had teams that would not make the tournament in a stronger section and that werent one of the best eight in the state. They have had teams, not many, that were good enought to win it that just didint. It is a single elimination tournament with excellent competition and it is hard to win three in a row unless you are clearly the best. They had a good program, good numbers, good coaching and Wakota arena. But from Doug Woog to Phil Housley and others , they couldnt get it done.

Grand Rapids 1978 Lost to Edina in overtime. Scott Klienendorst game winning shot went in but a missed call negated the goal. That one hurt real bad.

Why Warroad?

Post by Green and White Fan » Mon Jan 20, 2003 5:08 pm

I am curious why you would say Warroad has one of the best programs to not win a AA title. When you look back on it, what brings you to that conclusion. Just curious.

The 1987 Greenway squad should probably be mentioned. That group was successful all the way back to peewees. They won the national silver stick tourney. The got beat by a very good Bloomington Kennedy team (who Greenway beat earlier in the year in Bloomington) in a very good game in the semis and then beat Warroad for third but against Kennedy it could have gone either way I really enjoyed those two games.

2000 Elks-
Upset by Osseo in double overtime in sections, had beat blaine 7-1 a week before sections and Blaine wins the State Tournament. Elk River goes on to win the State Tournament in 2001 with a less talented team(but still very good) by beating Moorehead 8-1 in the Championship game.

The 1995 Jefferson squad had Parrish, Peterson, and Clymer (all NHL players) along with DeWolf, M. Anderson, R. Trebil and S. Ludwig who were D1 players themselves. If I remember correctly they lost in the semis to Duluth East in overtime (I may be wrong).

i had an uncle who played on the 69 warroad team. and from the stories that he has told me and from what my grandparents tell me, they were one of the best teams that warroad has ever had. they tell me that the game against edina was unreal. they say that everyone was on warroads side because they were such and under dog. my uncle was the one who hit the pipe and then edina came down and scored, all i can say is that i am proud to have had my uncle make warroad proud and to have him be part of the legacy that the 69 warroad team has. they had a whole crew of great players on that team and they were very close to taking the show. my uncle then went on to have a great career at BSU. way too go !!!!!!!!
