i would have to say Grand Rapids and Greenway is huge. anytime a private clashes with a good public school its a big rivalry. my favortie "general" rivlarys are the northern teams versus metro.

them are prolly all good games. but true rival games r teams that play eachother that are close to eachother or have been on one team that split into too like maple grove and ossseo. cuz everyone knos eachother and they both hate every kid on the other team to make a even better game. come watch the mg osseo battle and ull be amazed. it doesnt matter what the record is of both teams. u throw them out and thats what makes a good rival i think

Seriously folks, anyone who says Warroad and Roseau isn't the biggest rival has obviosuly little clue about the history of these programs. I realize that the other programs that you have named are huge rivals but none have been featured in nationally published Hockey Magazines like the Warroad-Roseau battle, none are featured in books like these two teams are, and none have as long of a history as BOTH of these great programs. When stores shut down in Osseo with signs hanging in the window saying "Closed for the Game", then they ahve reached the Roseau-Warroad status. If you haven't been to one of these matchups, plan on it sometime in the near future.

probably a tie

I haven't been to a Warroad/Roseau game, but I can't understand their being more hatred than there exists between Greenway/Grand Rapids. It's big school vs. small school. It's people who shower every day vs. people who shower once a month. The atmosphere at these games is extremely intense. I've been to a college hockey national championship. I've been to a game 6 in the NHL playoffs. The intensity of those contests is close, but still not the same as a Grand Rapids/Greenway tilt. Grand Rapids and Greenway are separated by a 6 mile hill. Warroad and Roseau I'm sure is an awesome rivalry, but I don't know if it's the same because both of those schools are small. I think it adds to the rivalry when it's a big school against a small school, and the all time record remains close throughout all those years. Greenway owned Rapids for the most part in the 90's, but things were different in the 80's. For Greenway it's like a world championship to beat Rapids. To Rapids, it's humiliating not to completely stomp, crush, destroy and annhilate into nonexistance a school that should be totally inferior.

i have never witnessed the warroad/roseau games, but just knowing their heritages tells me it must be classic. ive been to rapids parties, and there are greenway kids there. to be truly great kids must HATE kids from the other town. throughout high school. Rapids and Greenway is an awesome atmoshpere. Eveleth and Virginia is also a great rivalry. i remember one year eveleth was like..0-9 on the year and they went and upset the blue devils. Records are always thrown out when they meet. they are smaller schools..but the rivalry is passed on through many, many generations.

yes im sure the roseau/warroad games are big rivals and the cities shut down but there tiny communites so thats why. that game and the gr/greenway are oviosly good rivals but for one: in the roseau game, theyre in different classes and/or confrences, sections. it still means a lot to the team to win but it doesnt reflect on how there season is gonna end up really. the gr game its a little different they both kno eachother very good and are close together and are in the same class so a head to head battle could make or break the other teams season. along with the osseo mg games. osseo is a older poorer town and maple grove is a bigger, newer more rich town sort of speak. they were once one team but seperated and the cities are right next to eachother. the kids grew up together and now hate eachother.they see eachother all over town and are the same parties some times. they both trash talk and have bitter feelings toward eachother. they both want to win. sometimes this game could determine a better seed in sections or confrence. i would say these games mean more because of that reason. with all due respect roseau and warroad are great hockey towns and love there hockey along with the rapids and greenway. they all have tradtion but the mg/osseo seems to be intense games with pride and section seeds on the line.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub33.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUser ... ockey05 at: 10/28/03 12:50 am

In the cities WBL and Hill is a dandy

IRC would be Greenway and Grand Rapids.

Roseau/Warroad is a great rivalry but I believe Warroad gets way more credit than they deserve for history. Before Class A and open enrollment they had an occasional good team with many down years. Roseau owned them for years. In fact many northern powers didn't even play Warroad for years because they couldn't compete. Yes Warroad has a nice program but they do not have the storied history that everyone claims. Great individuals yes (which they promote), consistently great program before A and open enrollment, not even close.

Roseau/Warroad hands down. When was the last time NPR broadcast live from an arena the day of the game for any other schools in the state of MN? They even make national TV. Don't be surprised if ESPN2 does a game. History should tell us, what two schools palyed in the first high school hockey game in the state of MN?

I would have to say Roseau vs Warroad and Greenway vs Grand Rapids are both unbeleivable and in the metro Blake vs Breck is tops...the Osseo vs Maple Grove has not been going on long enough...no tradition.. WBL vs Hill a close second.. How about the Rochester schools? any rivalries there?

New Sports Channel

Post by JLS 81 » Tue Oct 28, 2003 9:54 am

Good news is that the creators of MSC are coming up with a new cable sports channel which focus on local and regional sport. Unlike Fox North which is an occasional Gopher game, Wild game with 22-7 of "best #### sports show". The channel plans to cover St. Cloud State games and Mankato I do believe as well they state that they plan on giving viewers a hockey game of the week focusing on the state rivalries. Not quite like being there in person but next best thing. I cannot waite to see this new station up an running! I think the name is either Victory Sports or Varsity Sports Channel...something like that.

This topic has surfaced each season this board has been here. It has to be Roseau-Warroad, Warroad-Roseau I did it both ways as to not offend anyone. The "gentlemen's" bets between co-workers and friends in the two communities is probably unmatched. Where else do you see people filling up a rink over an hour before the B game. People put out their blankets to reserve their spots at lunchtime-and people actually do respect that reservation. Even though people feel that the luster has been lost since the two are in separate classes, I think it has kept it great because Roseau is under pressure to beat a Class A team and Warroad is out to prove that the class difference doesn't matter. The rinks are absolutely jammed whether the teams are real close or one is having a down year. The series stands at 90-ish to 45-ish and 3 with Roseau having the upperhand. I bet Ram Hockey could come up with the exact figures. That is from @1945 to date. These teams were playing each other at this age under different banners since around 1910. And yes they have been covered by national media just because it is one of the most storied rivalries in hockey. Compare it to Montreal and Toronto from the 40's to the 60's, Montreal seemed to have the upperhand but it always was a great game to watch or listen to from what my dad has told me and what I've read. When GR and Greenway have met that many times then it can be compared. Top That. Osseo - Maple Grove - small potatos.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... smokin.gif ALT=":smokin">

Rivals

Post by ChrisK » Tue Oct 28, 2003 1:34 pm

Just based on the posts it generates here, the Roseau-Warroad rivalry is the hands-down top rivalry in the state. However, there are plenty of great rivalries across the state, a big one that always seems to generate a lot of posts here is Cloquet-Duluth East. Other good ones include Bloomington Kennedy-Bloomington Jefferson, White Bear-Hill Murray.

I gotta say that although sometimes it can get a little tedious I love the back and forth posting that these rivalries generate here. It's one of those things that makes high school hockey interesting and fun.

Jefferson-Kennedy

Post by petey1321 » Tue Oct 28, 2003 2:53 pm

The Jefferson-Kennedy rivalry used to be huge when I was a little kid. From 1987 to 1994, these teams accounted for 5 state titles between them, and man did they hate each other. I can remember cheerleaders having rather tasteless yet hilarious items thrown at them and throngs of police on either end to keep fights from breaking out. I also distinctly remember people being counted out when they got knocked down, and I always found that amusing.

Problem was that from 1992-2000, Jefferson dominated the series, even though Kennedy came in more fired up than for any other game of the year and Jefferson considered it just another game. Now, unfortunately (to me) the Jaguars seem to be heading downhill with a ton of defections from their most recent PeeWee A champion team (who beat Kennedy in the final) whereas Kennedy has kept more of its core (albeit losing Stoa). So, it's possible that it will become more of a two-sided rivalry again after another season of whippings last year. If there's one good thing coming from the probable continued return to earth of Jefferson, it will be that.

But yes, as has been stated, Roseau-Warroad is the answer here.

Lets go back a few years. In the late 50's Roseau and St. Paul Johnson had a great north/south rivalry. In the 60's Roseau/Int. Falls ran against each other, usually contending for the state title. In the late 70's Roseau/Rapids packed the arena. Remember the 1990 tourney? Later when Warroad became a contender the Roseau/Warroad rivalry was VERY intense. Since the split to A/AA, the Warroad/Roseau rivalry has lost some sparks, but still ignites twice a year.

Don't get me wrong, the Roseau/Warroad games are still powerful, but Roseau had rivalries contending against many other powerhouses in the state in earlier decades.

I remember quite a few but they have died off for the most part. None have the intensity nor the longevity of the Warroad/Roseau rivalry. They are still at it while others are more cyclical or disappear all together.

Rivalry

Post by hocke101 » Tue Oct 28, 2003 3:35 pm

I would have to say the public private rivalrys are great. The inner city rice street cup is always a huge sellout for two teams that do not usually pack the house by any means. I would have to say Roseau and Warroad is one of the best long term rivalries.

Hey all you Eastview and Apple Valley fans! I always thought this game was huge. Wasn't it a sell out last year at Apple Valley? It seems both of these teams bring their best play when they meet.

Rivalry shouldnt be recognized solely by fighting but i remember back in the prime of the Eveleth/Virginia game there were something like 98 penalty minutes dealt between the two teams. a rivalry should be recognized by a general good (or bad) Hate for the other team. These two teams have always bring out teh best in each other and have a multi generation history. im glad to see this thread hasnt run into an A, AA issue, as it shouldnt.
