Finally reached the magical 30 number, with singin's late entry. Knowing this man to be of great character, having helped me greatly all last season, I am giving him a pass, for this (last) time only.

The Week 5 games are now underway, and looking at the group's picks it appears that those who do well on these games in particular will be in the running for the Week 5 trophy:

Wednesday: Edina @ Hill-Murray
9 of 30 have the Hornets upsetting the Pioneers

Thursday: Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids @ Mounds View
17 of 30 are favoring the lower ranked (#16AA) SLP/CR over #14AA Mounds View

Friday: Chaska/Chanhassen @ Dodge County
A slight majority, 18 of 30, believe the visiting Storm Hawks will win.

Saturday: Blake @ Breck
As even as you can get, a 15/15 split

Saturday: Blaine @ Elk River/Zimmerman
If the Bengals win, about a third, 9 of 30, will be happy!

Saturday: White Bear Lake @ Stillwater
If the Ponies win, exactly a third - 10 of 30 - will be very happy!

As of 10:00pm only two of five games being reported as final:

Maple Grove 9, Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids 2
Hailey Herdine’s hat trick paced No. 6AA Maple Grove over 16AA Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids at Fogerty Arena. Herdine also had the first assist on the Crimsons’ first goal, scored by Tina Kampa. Also figuring into Maple Grove’s offense was Gopher recruit Taylor Wente, with two goals and one assist.

27 of 30 had Maple Grove prevailing, but nobody predicted their 9 goal scoring outburst. First timer glovesareoff came closest with his 6-2 call.

Centennial 4, Blaine 2

Centennials’ Gabbie Hughes and Anneke Linser, each with two goals and one assist, powered the Cougars over the Bengals at Fogerty Arena. Blaine did have a 33-25 edge in shots on goal.

A major upset according to our esteemed panel. Only three – wolfman, u12dad and puckdreams – got this one right, but again, no correct scores.

The remaining results and preliminary Week 5 standings will be posted tomorrow AM.

Here are the results from the three other games last night:

Thief River Falls 2, Warroad 3
Thief River Falls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Briana Jorde and Jaimee Nelson only to see Warroad score three goals in the third period to get the win. Mariah Gardner scored at just 1:03 in before Danika Huerd tied it at two about four minutes later. Sara Baumann, on an assist from Huerd, then netted the game winner midway through the third. All of the game's goals were scored at even strength, as there were just two penalties called, one on each team.

The Warriors were the clear favorite in our contest, having been picked by 24 of our 30 prognosticators taking part this week. Only one of the 24, however, correctly predicted the score, and that was spars46. Good start for spars!

Minnetonka 3, Chaska/Chanhassen 3 (OT)
The 10th ranked Chaska/Chanhassen Storm Hawks surprised the No. 2AA ranked Minnetonka Skippers, coming back from a 1-3 deficit in a game that ended in a 3-3 overtime tie. Emilee Anderson's goal with just 3:02 remaining knotted the score at three each, sending it into what would be a scoreless overtime. Sofia Poinar scored the Storm Hawks first two goals, while Lydia Passolt got primary assists on both the home team's second and third goals. Kippin Keller assisted on two of Tonka's three goals. Judging by the shots on goal - with Chaska/Chan having a slight 36 to 34 edge - it appears that the game ending in a tie was a just result.

Well as you might expect the Storm Hawks were huge underdogs according to our group; in fact only 2 of 30 had them winning. But nobody predicted the two teams would tie, so there were zero points awarded. Not too often when everyone gets shut out!

Breck 4, Dodge County 1
Grace Zumwinkle's two goals and one assist led the visiting Mustangs to a 4-1 win over the host Wildcats. Breck's Jenna Brenneman stopped 28 of the 29 shots that Dodge County put on net, so the play in the game was likely much closer than the final score would indicate.

Breck's win was anticipated by 27 of our panelists, and it was a big game for FIVE of them who correctly saw the game ending at 4-1. It was panpan111, clutterbucket, JohnnyBuck, MIYY4U and The Bone all picking up the bonus point heading into today's "really big game" when No. 3AA Edina takes on No. 1AA Hill-Murray.

Our Leaderboard is log-jammed, with everyone having at least one point but nobody having more than four. I'll put that up following tonight's game.

I get the score right in one game and a bunch of wrong picks. I bet this puts me firmly on the bottom.....AGAIN! This should be a lot easier then it is. Help!

Actually with the extra bonus point on the Breck/Dodge County game and your one point on the Maple Grove win you have 3 points! That's just one behind the group of six leaders, who are tied at 4. No reason to seek help, just yet!

In our lone game this evening it was:

Edina 0, Hill-Murray 2
The top ranked Pioneers held off the 3rd ranked Edina Hornets in a key non-conference game at Aldrich Arena. Hill-Murray’s offense was supplied by Lindsey Featherstone and Laura Anderson, each of whom scored goals in the 1st period while also assisting on each others’ scores. Hill-Murray took a pair of minor penalties in the 1st period and two more in the 2nd, but Edina could not capitalize on any of their man-advantage opportunities. Ava Bailey kept the Hornets off the board, stopping all 20 Edina shots for the shutout. The Pioneers put 22 shots on Edina goalie Anna Goldstein. With the win Hill-Murray extended their season record to 8-0, while Edina suffered its first defeat, falling to 6-1.

This game was a difference maker in our contest as 9 of 30 had Edina pulling the upset and one other who predicted the two teams would tie. That leaves 20, or two-thirds, who got it right and add a point. Nobody predicted Edina would be shut out so no bonus points in this one. Heading into tomorrow's single game panpan111, u12dad and clutterbucket lead by a single point over a posse of 15 who are right on their heels.

1. panpan111 – 5 points
u12dad – 5
clutterbucket – 5

4. Hansonbrother – 4
GoalieDefense – 4
36Guy – 4
wolfman – 4
THEBUCKSTOPSHERE – 4

hockeybozo – 4
spars46 – 4
glovesareoff – 4
hockeyfan87 – 4
massalsa – 4
MIYY4U – 4
The Bone – 4

easthockeydad – 4

It was a weird game at Aldrich tonight. Edina owned the offensive zone advantage and Hill-Murray had more shots and the better scoring chances. All that said, HM scored on their first two shots and it was a defensive slugfest the rest of the way. Ava Bailey (HM goalie) is a freshman and she looked really good in net tonight. All in all, the two teams were extremely even and may just have another meeting in a couple months. I would have to believe that would likely be a one goal game as well. I don't think Edina took one penalty, Hill had at least 4 and yet looked better on the penalty kill then Edina looked on the power play. Fun game between two heavy weight teams this year...

Thanks for your thoughts on the game, Sparlimb. Also for those who have not already read it there's a good article on the Hub that includes a short video of some of the game's highlights.

Final from the Super Rink:

Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids 2, Mounds View 2 (OT)
Jordan Keller's goal with 3:19 remaining tied the game at 2-2, and after a scoreless overtime period that's the way it ended. Sydney Brodt scored both goals for the Mustangs, who outshot the Panthers 39-12. Brittney Buhl made 37 saves to keep the score close throughout.

With nobody predicting a tie game, our group was shut out - same as Tuesday's Minnetonka/Chaska Chanhassen game. So, no change in our standings from yesterday. One game tomorrow, then a big finish on Saturday, which with 6 games is sure to decide our Week 5 winner.

Is Sydney any relation to Hannah and the Brodt's (Vic, Winny, etc) that went through Roseville?

I was told tonight (at the Gophers/Huskies women's game) that they are related, cousins maybe? The guy I asked was not 100% positive, however. Maybe someone else can confirm. In any case it would appear that Minnesota-Duluth has recruited a very good player.

Not up on the Hub yet, so no game stats, but according to Minnesota-Scores.net it was:

Chaska/Chanhassen 6, Dodge County 1
The result here was not so much of a surprise to our panel as the score. The closest anyone came to getting that right was 4-1 (JohnnyBuck, The Bone and easthockeydad). The 15 others who predicted a Storm Hawks win thought it would be a closer game. And there were 11 who had the Wildcats winning at home, with one thinking the two teams would tie.

So, going into today's slate of 6 games, here's where things stand:

1. panpan111 – 6 points
u12dad – 6

3. GoalieDefense – 5
36Guy – 5
clutterbucket – 5
READYtoPLAY – 5
hockeybozo – 5

massalsa – 5
MIYY4U – 5
The Bone – 5
nu2hockey – 5
easthockeydad – 5

Two of three games from this afternoon are posted as finals:

Minnetonka 5, Wayzata 0
Presley Norby’s four goals led Minnetonka to a dominating 5-0 win over Wayzata as Lake Conference action got underway at the Plymouth Ice Center. Lucy Hoelscher scored Tonka’s other goal and added an assist, while Kippin Keller and Katie McMillan notched two assists each. Skippers’ goaltender Tatyana Delaittre stopped all of the Trojans’ 20 shots to earn her shutout.

Single points were picked up by 24 of our 30 Week 5 contestants, but nobody got the bonus for the correct score. hockeybozo came closest with a 4-0 call.

White Bear Lake 1, Stillwater 2
Maya Yokanovich, on an assist by Lilia Scheid, scored the decisive 3rd period goal as Stillwater beat White Bear Lake in a Suburban East game played at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center. In total 109 shots [ ! ] were put on net by the two teams, with White Bear Lake holding a slight edge at 57-52. Both goalies – Stillwater’s Caitlin Carter and White Bear’s Samantha Klemann – obviously played amazing to keep the score as low as it was.

A pretty significant game in terms of our contest, as 10 thought the Bears would come out on top. But four of those who thought otherwise also predicted the score: MNHockeyFan (finally!), MN_Bowhunter, The Bone and puckdreams add the bonus.

Look for the results of the other four games as well as our final Week 5 standings to be posted later tonight.

Score from a game played earlier this afternoon:

Eden Prairie 2, Dodge County 2 (OT)
The Dodge County Wildcats and Eden Prairie Eagles skated to a 2-2 tie at the Dodge County Ice Arena in Kasson, Minnesota. The two teams traded goals in both the 2nd and 3rd periods but neither could find the back of the net in a scoreless overtime period. Scoring for Eden Prairie were Crystalyn Hengler and Anna Gravelle, and lighting the lamp for the Wildcats were Molly Shelton and Barret Boyer. Hengler also added an assist while Bella Wagner assisted on both Dodge County goals. Dodge County had a 35-27 edge in shots on goal.

The tie was an unexpected result for everyone on our panel, who favored EP by a wide margin, 27-3. Nobody predicted a tie, so for the third time this week everyone was held “scoreless”.
