The Chaska/Chan - CDH game is now underway and our contestant field here is set at 21, two more than last year when we had 19. So as not to give any of his secrets away, note that our defending champ panpan111 waited until almost the last minute today before posting his predictions. We'll see if anyone can knock him off this year - a very aggressive point total to shoot for would be the 42 that he rung up last year. I gave a pretty good effort last year but still finished a distant second with 38.

Just so everyone knows I will not be posting my usual game commentary unless I notice something very unusual or noteworthy that people would be interested in. Between these four tournaments and the separate "Week(s) 7" contest I'll be plenty busy just tracking the scores and point totals! Not complaining, as I very much enjoy doing it. :D

The first of the tournament games is now a final:

Chaska/Chanhassen 4, Cretin-Derham Hall 3

The Storm Hawks came storming back after a very slow start:

16 picked the winner but nobody got the score.

Upper Bracket
Chaska/Chanhassen 4, Cretin-Derham Hall 3
Eagan 4, Wayzata 3 (OT)

#17AA Eagan comes back from a 0-2 deficit to topple #4AA Wayzata. Taylor Anderson with the hat trick, including the game winner.

Hansonbrother and GoalieDefense were the only ones to call the upset.

Looks like I am late again as confounded travel and work keep interfering with my personal life. Since these are tourneys instead of individual games, I understand these entries will not be able to count, but I will play for fun. :?

Walser Tournament

Upper Bracket
Stillwater 2, Hopkins 0
Maple Grove 6, Irondale 0
Taylor Wente with a hat trick plus an assist. Shots were 57-9.

Our panel knew this would be a one-sided affair, with no one predicting an Irondale upset. The average predicted score was 6.4 to 0.4, or 6-0 rounded. Sure enough, that's the way it ended. And in what may be a Big Games record, there were six prognosticators who had the Crimson winning by this score: Hansonbrother, GoalieDefense, THEBUCKSTOPSHERE, hugo_lucas, MNHockeyFan :o and, no surprise, panpan111.

2015 Eagles Mid-Winter Meltdown

Lower Bracket
Benilde-St. Margaret's 0, Minnetonka 5
Roseau 0, Eden Prairie 8

Naomi Rogge with 3 goals and an assist and Alexa Dobchuk with a 17 save shutout led the host Eagles over the Rams.
http://www.mngirlshockeyhub.com/game/sh ... er=1956572

The winning team was correctly identified by 19 of our 21 contestants, but the score was a real surprise, as no one came close. The average predicted score was 3.7 to 1.7.

This game concludes Day 1 of the 2015 Eagles Mid-Winter Meltdown.

Walser Tournament

Lower Bracket
Grand Rapids/Greenway 0, Breck 2
U of M recruit Grace Zumwinkle with both goals and Sydney Scobee with a 23 save shutout.
http://www.mngirlshockeyhub.com/game/sh ... er=1956572

Once again our panel had no trouble identifying the winner (21 of 21) but the low score surprised everyone. Average predicted score was 4.7 Breck to 1.4 GR/G.

2015 Mid-Winter Border Battle

Upper Bracket
White Bear Lake 4, Forest Lake 3 (2 OT)

http://www.mngirlshockeyhub.com/game/sh ... er=1956572

On the Hub this game is shown as a two overtime tie, but according to Minnesota-scores.net and one other site I saw it's White Bear Lake that's advancing in the tournament, by a 4-3 score. I'm not sure if there was a shoot-out or exactly what method they used to determine which team advances, but at least for now we'll go with 4-3 Bears.

15 of 21 had the Rangers advancing, so 6 others pick up a point on most of the field. A few close calls, but nobody got the score.

2015 Mid-Winter Border Battle

Lower Bracket
Bismarck (ND) 2, Blaine 8
Orono 1, Hayward Co-op Hurricanes 2 (OT)

Another surprise to most of our contestants, with only five going with Hayward. One also nailed the score, and that was Knight7. Nice call!

2015 Mid-Winter Border Battle

Upper Bracket
White Bear Lake 4, Forest Lake 3 (2 OT)
Central Wisconsin Storm (WI) 1, Thief River Falls 7

A big oops here, as this was my big upset prediction. I was at least expecting a much closer game, after doing a little research on the Wisconsin site, but instead I lose a point on the entire field. A risky bet that failed!  :x

At least none of the others got 2! ;)

Might as well save the biggest upset for last.

Walser Invitational

Lower Bracket
Grand Rapids/Greenway 0, Breck 2
Lakeville South 4, Edina 2

The Cougars scored three goals in the last 6:03 of the game to beat the host Hornets. It was Emily Fischler who netted both the tying and winning goals, and it was Chloe Crosby who made 36 saves to give her team the chance to come back and win.
http://www.mngirlshockeyhub.com/game/sh ... er=1956572

In our contest nobody saw this coming...a big fat zero for everybody. Congrats to Lakeville South on their big win!

So after Day 1's 12 quarterfinal games, here's where we stand:

1. hockeybozo - 10 points
Knight7 - 10

3. Hansonbrother - 9
wolfman - 9
THEBUCKSTOPSHERE - 9
hugo_lucas - 9
READYtoPLAY - 9

8. 36Guy - 8
mnhockey3535 - 8
rascalbrock - 8
GoalieDefense - 8
Sparlimb - 8
The Bone - 8
u12dad - 8
MNHockeyFan - 8
nu2hockey - 8
panpan111 - 8

18. Three with 7

21. One with 6

Also, as we go I'll be editing the very first post in the thread to show all of the final scores for the four tournaments.

Not contest-related per se, but I just saw where Wayzata lost to CDH (1-3) in the consolation round of the Eagles Meltdown tournament. Not all that surprising, because CDH is a very good team, but that's Wayzata's fourth loss in their last five games. And that comes after winning their first 10 consecutive games to start the season. The sudden tailspin has to be very frustrating for the players and coaches...

Mid-Winter Border Battle
Upper Bracket Semifinal
White Bear Lake 3, Thief River Falls 0

Corinne Watson put White Bear Lake on the board in the middle of the 2nd period, then Morgan Newpower and Sarah Moy scored in the 3rd for the Class 2A 18th ranked Bears. Samantha Klemann stopped all 23 Prowlers' shots to earn the shutout.

The Bears are surprising everybody in our panel except two: rascalbrock and Sparlimb. They were the only two to predict that White Bear Lake would win this semi and advance to the final, and in doing so they pick up 2 points on the rest of the field.

2015 Eagles Mid-Winter Meltdown
Upper Bracket Semifinal
Chaska/Chanhassen 3, Eagan 2

Still tied 2-2 after an 8 minute sudden-death overtime period, this game went to a shootout and the Storm Hawks prevailed.

Of our group of 21, only ONE - Knight7 - had Chaska/Chanhassen winning this semi and advancing to the championship game tomorrow. Knight7 scores two on everyone else!

Mid-Winter Border Battle

Lower Bracket Semifinal
Hayward (WI) 0, Blaine 7

Sarah Ganley and Paige Beebe scored two goals apiece to power the Bengals past the Hurricanes. Jaela O'Brien only needed to make 8 saves to get her shutout.

No suspense here. Everyone had Blaine winning the semi and advancing to the final. Two points all around.

Walser Tournament

Upper Bracket Semifinal
Stillwater 1, Maple Grove 4

Lauren Kaufmann's two goals and an assist led the Crimson over the Ponies, and Coco Francis had 28 saves in limiting Stillwater to one just the one goal.

Another game where there was no disagreement. All 21 add 2 points.

2015 Eagles Mid-Winter Meltdown

Lower Bracket Semifinal
Minnetonka 5, Eden Prairie 3

Katie McMillan scored two goals and Annelise Rice added a goal and an assist for Minnetonka as they beat tournament host and defending champion Eden Prairie. The Skippers advance to the championship game against Chaska/Chanhassen, while Eden Prairie will play Eagan for 3rd place.

Tonka was a unanimous pick to advance, so everyone adds 2 points.

No sign of any progress on the scoring of the Breck/Lakeville South semifinal, which is the last game to affect our contest scoring today. But I'm going to post our standings now anyway, because the outcome of this game will only affect one contestant: Knight7, who is already our leader. Everyone else had Edina advancing. But if Breck beats Lakeville South, add 2 points to Knight7's already leading total:

1. Knight7 - 18

2. rascalbrock - 16
Sparlimb - 16
hockeybozo - 16

5. Hansonbrother - 15
wolfman - 15
THEBUCKSTOPSHERE - 15
hugo_lucas - 15
READYtoPLAY - 15

10. 36Guy - 14
mnhockey3535 - 14
GoalieDefense - 14
The Bone - 14
u12dad - 14
MNHockeyFan - 14
nu2hockey - 14
panpan111 - 14

18. Three with 13

21. One with 12

So, Go Cougars! ;)
