Does anyone know where there is history of the old 'Catholic' School state tournament?
When it started.... stopped... champions .. participants etc??

videoscout has a complete history of the catholic school tournament but the powers that be decided to delete him!!

I think private schools could participate in the MSHSL tournament as of 1975. I assume when this happened the privates were done but I dont know if they played for a while after or not.

There were a lot of great players who played in that tournament and for those schools. There were also a number of very good teams.

But, I think every one agrees that until slappy graduated, there was no way they'd let those crazy Catholics in.

I was just trying to remember some of those teams and then went looking for info onthe internet and came up empty.

I know Duluth Cathedral had some very good teams and players.

And Crookston, I believe, had a team. Never very good as I remember. And then the city teams.

Cathedral had some great teams which were written about in depth but obviously Elliott70 missed the boat on those as they fell off the end sooner or later over the years on this board, and I'm not about to spend all that time and energy on the subject only to see it deleted because of a few jerks as seems to be the case around here far too often for my taste!

Crookston Cathedral defeated the Sioux and was the only
high school hockey team in Mnnnesota to do so period!

Other than that, this place doesn't deserve to know any more about those teams anyway !

What happened to the Morinville thread?

I spent some good time defending the guy there and I come back to the board anf POOF it was gone !

With all the private school haters around here all that has to happen is a couple of jerks post their usual stupidity and a lot of time that good folks spend contributing to the thread gets tossed into the garbage with the rest!

All I know is that SPA and Hill were the big powerhouses back in the day. I think Hill left for the MSHSL in 75 (maybe 73 or 74), starting a mass exodous (Cretin, St. Thomas, Breck, Blake, etc...). SPA was the last one to join (76-77? Maybe?). I think they competed on a national level for that last year. I'll check this out a little later, because it's interesting and I'd like to know how it all worked when the Private schools were separated from the Public.

When you played back in the day did the private schools get very big crowds since they were such good teams? I know Crookstein had a private school how could they manage to have a H.S and a Private and still compete in sports i mean they aren't very big and i can't imagine that in those years (50's,60's,70's) that kids were driving that far to just go to school and i also don't think many parents would let there kids stay with other families just for a sport would they?

Crookston had 5 teams at once back in the days.

Two were Catholic teams!

around here and he could give a complete historic rundown whereas I am more articulate concerning the late sixties and easly seventies when Hill, Blake, Breck,
Duluth Cathedral, St Thomas Academy, Cretin, Crookston Cathedral, Benide, etc. were not allowed into the so called BIG SHOW !

We had some great crowds in duluth and the cities and those tourneys were a lot of fun and some great hockey was played throughout those State Tourneys!

I wouldn't mind posting the info again but to what end?

If we could start a thread that was gauranteed for preservation it might be worth it but there are not a lot of private school lovers in these waters and you know how that goes!

Even starsalum and slapshotbg forgot how we championed the private schools just barely three years ago and then again in 2003!

St Paul Hill could have defeated anybody in the state in '69' 70' for example and they beat my team in overtime
4-3 in '69's semifinal to face Duluth Cathedral in the Championship game!

I know! I got one of my two goals in that game to send the game into overtime with 4 seconds remaining on the clock when I did it!

The house was packed in Duluth that night!

And NO! I wasn't on the ice when they scored the game winner!

They never would have if I was!

Hill/ Murrays current coach and his team Cretin, I think, stayed with us during the holiday tourney when I was a senior and we did stuff like that every year and had a wonderful time doing so!

Great way to get to know players from other teams in those days!

slap, sorry you're upset about the Morinville thread but it had become filled with one person's vile-filled crap, not to mention the responses to it.

Was it better for me or Mitch to pick it apart and delete every post and the resulting replies or just to nuke it? I nuked it.

It's the risk run every time one of us responds in a thread where you have people with nothing better to do than spew hate or impress their buddies.

Short of making this entire Board an "invite only" Board, this will continue to happen on occasion. Even then, it won't be 100% preventable.

Email us in the future if you have a problem. Don't bring it up in a seperate subject.
