There is so much more to AHA hockey, than the Trebil years. You have to crawl before you walk, I was there when the STARS (Co*Stars) were in the learning stages. We took our lumps but continued on. I can give you more it you want.

I've felt that the private school tourney should have a website containing information, anecdotes, pictures, etc. I'd even volunteer to do it, but I have no expertise. I could research old newspapers however, for stories, stats, and pictures. Even though I'm not a big fan of the private schools, they are an integral part of Minnesota high school hockey and there isn't a lot of information out there about the private school tourney.

Slappy, if it was the 47-48 champion Sioux team, the coach was Don Norman, or may have been Fido Purpur, Al Renfrew, Don May, or Barry Thorndycraft before the early 60's.

Two national champions during that time, 47-48 and 58-59.

Cliff (Fido) Purpur was Gary's dad or uncle, I believe. Fido played for the Blackhawks with John Mariucci, then returned to Grand Forks and I understand had an huge impact on hockey.

Possibly Cliff jr played at CC, I think fido had a few boys.

You may have also played against Tony Palmiscno, also influential in GF parkboard youth hockey, I believe.

Him and Gambucci were friends !

Cliff Purpur is Gary's oldest brother!

Fido is their Dad!

Of course Cliff might be Fido's other name too.

I played against Cliff after high school in a game where

he brought Gary and Dick and Bob?, with him!

Palmiscino was a senior im my junior year!

Tony was a pretty good player!

It's not off topic though, as Gambucci was originally from

Minnesota's iron range!

Yeah Vide Sc ut played agains Neil Broten and the Rams in his time.

He used to tell me about this kid who's Jersey went down to his knees that was making monkeys out of the competition along with his line Erickson and the other guy.

I was in L.A. at the time!

I became a fan of Brotens when he was with the North Stars!

I loved the Roseau Rams too when I was a kid but our school didn't play them in high school, but I played against some of those boys at Roseau in the VFW league !

They kicked our (_!_)tts 6-0 when last we played them!

Cruisin' down highway 2 ridin' shotgun with the assistant coach with the rest of the guys on my line we were in hog heaven on our way to Duluth !

Upon our arrival we pull into the radisson I think it was, unpack our stuff after check in and suit up for the banquet for all you can eat chicken etc. and stuff our faces!

What Bliss!

After our skate, the next day, we first set eyes on Mike Randolf and Pokey Trachsel as Duluth Cathedral was doing their pre-games skate and that's when I realized that Henry Boucha was not the only great player in the state besides me that is!

We later hit the ice to face co-favorite Benilde and battle to
a 3 -1 victory where they outshot us about 3-1 throughout the game!

Guess who got the winning goal? ~~~~>

The next night we take on St. Paul Hill and scare the you know what out of them by losing in a 4-3 overtime thriller sending them to the Championship game to take on Randolf and Duluth Cathedral !

Guess who got 2 goals in that game? ~~~~>

We then move to play for 3rd against St. Thomas Academy and outshoot them 3-1 but lose 3-2 !

Guess who got one of our 2 goals that game?~~>

Guess who was really ticked when we lost?~~>

After watching Duluth Cathedral defeat St. Paul Hill in the Championship (1969) guess who was lining up at the request of his team mates to receive his all tournament award along with Trachsel and Randolf and Conroy and Young (both from Hill ) and the others being that he scored half of his teams goals (Crookston Cathedral ) even though he was only a sophomore at the time? ~~~~~>

Guess who was really 'ticked' even though he tried to hide it when they gave the award to our 5 foot 9 senior defenseman
Paul Fontaine instead ?~~~~~~> <~~~~~~

Guess who played in two more State Tourneys after that but still failed to take home the big prize? ~~~>

As a young lad, I recall going to many private school games from the mid 1960’s until the early 1970’s. My brother went to Hill, so it’s them I remember the most. Players such as the Romanchuks, Langevins and Beldes, among others. Teams like SPA, Crookston, Duluth Cathedral and Cretin.

I would LOVE to read more about the Independent Tournament years. I attended my share, and while the details are foggy, recalling the excitement is quite easy.

With regard to AHA and Zamman, I graduated from Archbishop Brady in 1978, and I can easily relate to the “crawling stages” of a hockey program. Back in those days we took a LOT of lumps at the hands of almost everyone. People worried about “Private Schools” thought of Hill-Murray and perhaps SPA at times and few others. Schools such as AHA, Brady didn’t strike too much fear into opponents hearts.

Sorry Zamman, I just dont know a lot about AHA's history, kinda went there and wanted to get out as fast as possible, not saying it was a bad school though! It would be nice if you could fill in the pre-trebil years cause I know really nothing about them except for Drey Bradley being the coach before him, great gym teacher by the way.

I will talk to my brother and see what I can extract from him. As I said earlier, my details probably aren't all that great, as I was probably as interested at that age at what treats my sister was going to buy me as with what was happening on the ice.

Given the era, I probably even was privileged to see the Slapshooter bury a goal or two.

I know SPA was coached by Mike Foley before he went to the Gophers. I think he still runs a summer hockey school over at SPA. He's probably the one to ask about SPA's glory years. Or Tom Vanelli, the St. Thomas coach... he played for SPA back in the 70's, so he was there. I know they had a bunch of D1 players and maybe an NHler or two, but Foley and Vanelli are the only two names I know.

You asked about D-1 players from my school?

Well back then we had some great players including myself

and Vide Sc ut who were at the time considered

C-1 in those days!

Many players in the private schools in those days were distinguished with a C-1 status by the public school
league also!
