Single A rankings

Post by elliott70 »

While who beat who by how much and when is important - the idea behind sport ranking is to determine if in the game played tonight who would win. A difficult task, and no matter if computerized or eye test, the question remains, 'the team at the top of the list would beat all comers?"
So looking at the teams all the 'data' is relevant, but the reality is who is winning now.

With that said there is not much question on the top 4, what order 2-4 is open to discussion. After that it is a bit murky.
But since HSHW is on sabbatical, I will put some BS on paper.

1. Hermantown 14-1-1 : Two AA and Mahtomedi left that may be a challenge.
Should enter playoffs with a 23-1-1 record and not be challenged until the state single A final. Definitely good enough to give it a run in AA, but that has been discussed.

2. Breck 11-3-2 : Five good single A games coming up. Possible could finish the season with 20 wins. I put them a t 2 because of their tradition, skill, playoff experience and coach.

3. Delano 13-2-1: Big loss to Holy Family and a tie to Cloquet cast enough shadow on a very good team to put them behind Breck. Have Holy Family against to prove the first game a fluke, St Cloud Cathedral, Mound-Westonka and Orono are the tough one left on the schedule.
In all likelihood them and Breck in the 2A final. Would expect that one to be well worth the price of admission.

4. St. Paul Academy 13-2: Recent loss to Breck and to a strong Wisc team and beat a lot of decent single A teams. They have some decent single A competition before sections and should hit 19 or 20 wins. But not make it so the X as section 4A goes 4 deep.

5. East Grand Forks 9-4-2: Only single A loss is early in the year 4-3 loss to a good Greenway team. They should end the year with 15 wins as they have some good AA opponents along the way. If they play the way they can with discipline they should be in the semi-finals at state.

6. Mahtomedi 9-7-0: First game loss to St Paul Academy in OT is only single A loss. Win over St Thomas is the feather in their cap. They have Stillwater, Breck, Hermantown, StA (again) and St cloud Cathedral left on the schedule so they may finish one game over .500 and have a deep section to get threw to the X. Maybe riding St Paul city bus to the state tourney.

7. St Cloud Cathedral 14-2-2: Lost to Hermantown and StPA, tied EGF and Alex. 5 game win streak and appear to be playing well. Should end up 18maybe 19 wins as they have some tough games remaining including Delano. Should be in the section finals. Capable of getting to the finals if the goaltending holds.

8. Hibbing 10-7: Lost to single A teams Greenway (split), EGF and Alex. Should end up with 18 wins. Toss up with Greenway who gets the runner-up section 7A trophy.

9. Alexandria 11-4-3: A very dangerous team. Big challenge to Cathedral for the trip to the X and could give fits to the Breck/Delano team. Should end up with 15 or 16 wins.

10. Sartell 12-4-3: They can score but let things fall a part. They could be the team at the X, but not a challenger once there. Should end with 17 wins.
