Bad information in, bad information out. First of all look up something called Adjusted SV%. Not all tools such as LSQ should be applied to all circumstances. We can all agree that SOS is very important to rankings as a whole. But to apply this style when deciphering rankings, or judging the qualities/skills of a goalie is at best not worth the time it took to run the numbers for it. As far as shots on net.. some teams ranking low on the LSQ based on SOS had around a 1000 shots. Sure they did, but what ever. I'm sure you can thank dad, or mom, or that student manger for those numbers trying to help them qualify for Mrs. Goalie. To achieve those numbers what is that like a shot every 45 seconds for every minute for every game in the season...not easy to achieve. Again, whatever there. But what I'm trying to say is these shot numbers are less accurate then these rankings, and that's saying a lot. Frankly the stronger the team more shots are taken from top of the circles, to outside faceoff circles to high in the zone. If a goalie getting close to a 1000 shots deep in the zone on her, as opposed to a goalie getting D1/quality defensemen stopping them at the blue line, its a whole different hockey game and shot. That's where Adjusted SV% comes in. Colleges uses it, NHL uses it. There has been a few goalies wash out from D1 to D3 that was ranked very high in rankings like this, they were all highly awarded by the conference, and ranked high as well, but at the end of the day it was very misleading when considering skills. This does a disservice more than anything. In fact, you could almost say the SOS/LSQ should be looked at inversely. Some of those goalies who get rebound after rebound, and riddled with shots sitting on a 875-900SV% are far superior to a goalie seeing 300 shots high in the zone for 25 games sitting on a 940SV%. But even if Adjusted SV% were to be used, you still need accurate shot counts, and we all know some of these shots counts are far from accurate. Is this an absolute for all goalies, no, but you can see there is definitely good reasons not to look at these rankings very seriously at all. Best way to see how a goalie is... get out and watch them!

Not only can you not trust the stats. The stats don't tell you much anyway. I saw some pretty bad hockey players in net at state this year who have pretty good stats. Kids who refuse to leave their net to play pucks for their d. Kids who cover pucks they shouldn't. Kids who can't control rebounds. If you have a great team in front of you they will make up for that and even keep that goalies stats up. Stopping pucks makes you a goalie, doing all the other stuff well makes you a hockey player.

Spot on! Sticks for rebound control was non-existent for most... a lost practice. Saw a lot of leg pads straight out for some juicy rebounds straight out front, or to the weak side back door rebound because the stick was not involved in the play what so ever. Having a good team in front is tough when learning skills for a goalie. You cant sit and watch for most of the season and think you can perform at a high level when the time comes. Realty hits hard when faced by good skaters and shooters..

Bow Hunter .. Yes I agree with you with respect to not seeing a lot of good goalies this past weekend, but there were a few that did rise to the top. Be aware of the statistical concept of normalization. The result give you a relative re-scaling, not an absolute measure, and is a tool for recruiter and scouts to guide the process of where they travel to go watch a player. As I was sitting watching the AA games, I would like to see shots categorized by high and low percentage shots that would paint a slightly different picture. But with that said, we have what we have as far as collected data (straight from the MN HH), and normalizing the raw SV% according to relative strength of the opponent that the goalie is facing is much better than depending upon the raw percentage alone.

So what your saying even though your data points are flawed, we should use this because "we have what we have". But I would add... Regardless of the "statistical" concept, or the "re-scaling" of data, or the "normalizing" of data, at the end of the day, it's still flawed. There are several undeniable truths about statistics: First and foremost, they can be manipulated, massaged and misstated if not applied correctly, which is is exactly the case here. By expanding the scope of your formula outside its intended purpose you significantly influenced the results useless. My hope is scouts don't use this as a guide for trips. They maybe wasting their time, as well as being very disappointed in what they see.

Is there the ability to use the MNHH data to look at scoring

Post by massalsa »

It would be great to be able to look at scoring "Normalized for Relative Strength of Opponent (RSOOP)".

Also would be great to be able to look at scoring/points leaders or simply being able to sort graduating years.

Interesting you say that. I was in your class. By the way community colleges are a great way to save money... statistically speaking.

I would say put your stats interest in another area. This is about the dumbest ranking I have seen. Rather than penalizing goalies based on strength of schedule how about penalize the goalies based on quality of team they play for. It's pretty obvious the better team you play for the less quality scoring chances you see as a goalie. Just because you play a weaker schedule doesn't mean you are seeing lesser quality shots.

Spot on. That's exactly the point here. Mr LSQ just doesn't get it ...no disrespect intended.

I guess where I get lost is because I can't math too good.

I don't understand why the adjusted percentages are so low.

For it to make sense to me it would need to adjust each goalie's % up or down based on the strength of her own team and the opposition.

Goldstein at Edina would have to come down simply because she's on the best team, but conversely, Winona's % should go up.

That's where ya lost me, but I admit that's my problem, not yours. I can see where goalies with lower actual % are ranked higher than others so I know that they are getting that credit, I just don't get the ranking system I guess.

High School Goalie Stats =/< worthless.

The data getting entered in the front end is worthless to start. Shots on goals being judged by mostly random volunteers, who often are quick, or slow on the shot button. Also, the angle at which the scoring table sits makes it impossible to even correctly judge shots on the long side of each net.

I feel for goalie parents, as people probably do judge many of our goalies first off of stats. Scouts still go and watch, but are they overlooking goalies on bad teams who are facing higher quality shots and easier tap ins?

Watching goalies this season, some of the "elite" goalies did not pass the eye test and were way shakier than their stats would indicate. Other "weaker" goalies via stats were pretty darn solid.

Add in that many of the players on this list only played 7-10 games, we are talking small sample size. So, it is tough to see data like this posted without some strong disclaimers about the quality of the data.

I always wondered why more D1 goalies don't come from Minnesota. I don't have the stats to back this up, but if you look at all the D1 teams throughout the country, very few with significant playing time come from Minnesota...at least as a percentage of the total as compared to forwards and defensemen.

Any theories that might help explain this?

I think for starters part of the reason is the stats plays a huge role. Not very dependable from any aspect. Take a look at the All State and All Conference selections and how they faired over the years after leaving high school, not so good. Most head coaches don't have a clue about a position that's is very technical in nature. Then they go to speak to these scouts and fall back on those erroneouse numbers because they just don't have a clue. I believe they have missed some very talented girls these past few years due to awards and tainted numbers. This is a sistimic issues, as well as a credibility issue for the state of hockey. These scouts have just learned not to look this way as often as they should due to these issues. There is a lot diamonds in the rough out there. They just can't look at those few so called cream of the crops, kind of like that LSQ ranking shows you. That ranking is truly a indicator what is wrong with goalie stats. Zooomx hit the nail on the head...

Partly due to the system only rewarding winning goalies on teams "that matter". Partly because our kids don't play as many games and therefore don't develop as quickly as the eastern or Canadian kids. They're signing them at 15 or 16 years old. Most mn kids aren't even starting varsity yet so unless you're on own of the few AAA teams that travel the globe all off season, well... enjoy playing d3.

BowHunter .. you are absolutely right about contrast between MN High School and 19U_AAA. I noticed on the College Commitment web site that very few MN HS girl goalies were committed compared to kids out of places like Oakville, Chicago Mission, etc... When I did the tally, I was rather shocked at how few MN goalies were on the list! These U19 AAA teams plays upwards of 50 or more games from SEPT-MAR, thats a full 25 games or more for two goalies each team. MN goalies who are splitting time in the nets don't anywhere near that number of games.
