UND cuts women's hockey

Post by MNHockeyFan »

Sad news for women's hockey in general, but even more so for all of the players who were expecting to return to finish out their careers.

Looks like only four Minnesotans who were on the team this past season are directly impacted, who will either have to look elsewhere or retire from D1 hockey.

Charly Dahlquist, sophomore forward from Eden Prairie
Taylor Flaherty, sophomore D from Lakeville North
Rebekah Kolstad, sophomore forward from Mankato East
Annelise Rice, freshman forward from Minnetonka

There were several others who completed their eligibility and will sadly reminisce that they played at UND the last year they had women's hockey. Really a shame all around.

Also not sure how many current high school players who have either committed to or seriously considering attending UND will be impacted.

If they were scholarship players, does that mean their scholarship evaporates as well?

No, it's been confirmed that all rostered players, if they stay enrolled, would continue to receive their current scholarship level.

That is correct, plus, the players received their official release yesterday so other schools can contact them directly about playing elsewhere without violating the NCAA tampering rules.

The kids have a lot of tough decisions to make. Transferring credits is not easy and usually some if not many won't be accepted . This year's juniors will have a hard decision to make. The idea of ending your playing career a year early after 13,14,15 years is going to hurt, you can be sure.

Not to mention the ripple affect with some of these UND kids and recruits taking spots away from other recruits at various schools.

According to this tweet Centennial's Gabbie Hughes changed her commitment to UMD, where she'll be joining her linemate Anneke Linser.

UMD already has 5 recruits for that year - is she going to walk on?

Good question, some kids will likely have to walk-on for a year and then go on scholarship...thus smaller numbers for next years class? This or a lot of kids will get smaller scholarships to spread out more

I *just* signed this petition to President Mark Kennedy: Keep North Dakota women's hockey alive
Will you sign as well? Every signature helps, and if you sign *right now* it will really build momentum. Head here, then help me recruit more as well!

Looks like Charlie Dahlquist landed at Ohio state with her former teammate Lauren Boyle.

North Dakota's decision to drop women's hockey a major blow to the sport

“North Dakota is a warning shot across the bow for women’s hockey,” said Brad Frost, coach of the Gophers women’s hockey program. “Hockey is king up there so to see it get cut is an eye-opener. We need to be adding teams, not taking them away.”

“They see North Dakota, a big-time hockey school, on the chopping block — who’s to say someone else can’t do it?” she said. “This can’t happen again. We would skate with the young girls in North Dakota and sign autographs. They would say, ‘We want to be like you.’ Now they can’t, and that’s hard to see.”he region.

Especially if your kid wants to go east...

Even better if your kid wants a catholic college experience...

Its not Notre Dame but it is another D1 hockey school...
