Class A Rankings 1-28-18

Post by HShockeywatcher » Sun Jan 28, 2018 9:47 am

There was only one big game last week and one big mover. This coming week we have 1v2, 3v4, 3v5, 1v8, 10v13, as well as a bunch of huge games between section teams. There could be lots of moving next week.

Enjoy!

1. [1] Hermantown (11-5-2) (6-0)
The Hawks picked up two section wins easily last week and this week has their biggest Class A week of the season. Going on the road to play a Virginia team who just beat Greenway then hosting a good Mahtomedi team.
This week: Tues @ Virginia, Thurs vs Cloquet, Sat vs Mahtomedi

2. [2] Mahtomedi (13-4-1) (8-1)
The Zephyrs picked up an uncharacteristic conference loss to North St Paul, then beat Simley. This week they play Hermantown on the road.
This week: Wed @ St Paul Academy, Sat @ Hermantown

3. [3] Orono (11-5-1) (10-2)
The Spartans have a big week coming up that could either solidify their top spot in the section or mix things up a little bit.
This week: Tues vs Delano, Fri @ Mound Westonka

4. [4] Mound Westonka (15-4-1) (12-2-1)
The White Hawks' lone section blemish is a 1 goal loss on the road in Orono. Coming off a shut out of Delano, winning this week could secure the top spot in the section.
This week: Tues @ Hutchinson, Fri vs Orono

5. [6] Delano (10-9) (9-6)
The Tigers are likely the 3 seed in section 2A. They lost to Orono by 1 at home the first time around; can they win on the road this week?
This week: Tues @ Orono, Fri vs New Prague

6. [7] Minneapolis (12-9) (8-4)
The Novas picked up another AA loss this week. They continue to be in a peculiar position, as all of their Class A losses came in an 8 day stretch and they followed those up with wins over Orono, St Cloud and Mahtomedi in their next game. With losses to Mound Westonka and Delano, but a win over Orono and a game against Breck coming up, it'll be interesting to see how they end up being seeded in sections.
This week: Tues vs South St Paul, Sat @ Chaska

7. [8] East Grand Forks (11-8-1) (8-3-1)
The Green Wave picked up a quality section win then got shut out to team they previously beat. While they are 4-4 in their last 8 games they only have 3 Class A losses, all over 6 weeks ago in the first 6 games of the season. Big section games this week.
This week: Tues vs Crookstoon, Fri @ Warroad

8. [9] Virginia (13-7-1) (10-4-1)
The Blue Devils beat Greenway last week, but have also lost to Hibbing and Proctor and tied International Falls in their last 8 games. They will probably need to either upset Hermantown this week or have Greenway falter to not be the 3 seed in 7A.
This week: Tues vs Hermantown, Fri @ St Paul Academy

9. [5] Greenway (14-6) (11-4)
The Raiders only have 4 Class A losses to Hermantown, Mahtomedi, Virginia and Alexandria, and, while they have good wins over Mound Westonka, Virginia, East Grand Forks, Cathedral and Delano, their last good win came a month ago today.
This week: Fri @ St Paul Johnson, Sat @ St Paul Academy

10. [10] Cathedral (14-5) (12-5)
The Crusaders beat Little Falls in OT and came from behind to beat Luverne by 1 last week. Their last 3 losses have been by 1 goal each to Hermantown, Virginia and Delano, so they can clearly play with anyone. With games against Breck, Orono and Mahtomedi this week and next, they have the opportunity to rise a bit with some wins.
This week: Tues vs Wadena-Deer Creek, Thurs @ Breck

11. [11] Sartell-St Stephen (15-5) (14-1)
The Sabres are a great story this year as they have wins over Alexandria, Little Falls and Warroad allowing only 1 goal in each game and the only Class A loss they have is to Cathedral, although they were crushed in that meeting.
This week: Tues vs Little Falls, Thurs vs St Cloud

12. [12] Alexandria (11-8-1) (10-5-1)
The Cardinals lost to St Cloud by only 1 and then beat Bemidji on the road, two things that are very positive. They have 4 road games left, but their home game is against Sartell, which will likely determine the second seed in 6A.
This week: Thurs @ Fergus Falls, Fri @ Little Falls

13. [13] Breck (5-12) (3-4)
The Mustangs picked up a win this week. Monday they host WI's top ranked team in 17-0 Hudson then have two more home games ending with Cathedral on Thursday. Picking up more than one win this week would throw a wrench in a lot of things going forward.
This week: Mon vs Hudson, Tues vs Minnehaha Academy, Thurs vs St Cloud Cathedral

14. [14] Thief River Falls (10-8-2) (9-5)
The Prowlers are now 8-1-1 in the last 10 games, but the one loss is to East Grand Forks by 3. They have 4 road games to close out the season.
This week: Thurs @ Crookston

15. [15] South St Paul (12-6) (7-2)
The Packers only have 2 Class A losses, but one of them was the first game of the season, so a win in Minneapolis would be huge this week. They have lots of season left and plenty of games to go before the season is over to prepare for the hopeful rematch with Mahtomedi.
This week: Tues @ Minneapolis, Thurs vs Century, Sat vs Owatonna

Other noteworthy teams:

Monticello (14-3-2) (11-1-1)
The Moose's only Class A loss is still to Orono.
This week: Tues @ Litchfield, Thurs vs St Michael-Albertville

Little Falls (10-7-3) (9-6-3)
With the Fliers tying Alex and Fergus early, losing to Sartell by 1 and losing to Cathedral twice, it is conceivable that they finish as high as the 2 seed in sections if they finish strong and they have lost to Cathedral closer than anyone else. If they can pick up any wins this week, they could be ranked next week.
This week: Tues @ Sartell, Fri vs Alexandria

Providence Academy (14-5-2) (9-3-1)
This week: Tues @ Blake, Thurs vs St Paul Johnson
