2018 SECTIONS

Post by nu2hockey » Wed Feb 07, 2018 5:53 pm

Monday, sectional games started with a play-in game ....Congrats to Rochester Century for coming from behind to win...

Tonight, we have 12 games...normally, these first games have few surprises except in the 4seed/5 seed game...

It appears that we have at least 5 games that potentially could have the lower seed move forward.

ER/BURNSVILLE
NORTHFIELD/ LVL NORTH
OWATONNA/R MAYO
EASTVIEW/ PARK CG
CHI LAKES/ MINNY

GOOD LUCK TO ALL TEAMS !

Well sec 3AA didn't let us down...both the 5 seed(ER) and the 6 seed(EV) won last night..plus the 2 seed(AV) needed OT to defeat the 7 seed (HAST)..

For the night we saw 5 lower seeded teams win.....

CHI LAKES (5A)
ER (3AA)
OWATONNA (1AA)
EV (3AA)
HOLY ANGELS (5A)

Congratulations!

It seems that last night was a little exciting for our girls teams...We had 2 5seeds advancing (H/C & P RAPIDS)...

Plus we had an 1OT.....MANKATO EAST over WINDOM 3-2

gwg by Bri Adams, asst Claire Johnson,Madison Davis

A 2OT game......ROBBINSDALE A/C 2- OSSEO/PC 1

gwg by Lauren Price, asst Sadie Bresnahan

AND A 4OT game.....HIBBING/CHISHOLM over C-E-C 1-0

Though it takes a team effort, making a play to extend one's season will live with these kids forever....well done girls!

Hopefully some of you witnessed these games!

Looking at the box score, what is normally a 51 minute game took an exhausting 75 minutes to settle. The two goalies, Elise Lund of C-E-C and Hibbing/Chisholm's Abby Edstrom, went a combined 73/74 for a SV% of .986. =D>

I see that the box score shows 75 min for the goalies, that would end the game in the 2OT, but the box score also shows shots in the 3OT & 4OT, which would run the game past the 84 min mark

Friday night had 4 games all within SECTION 2AA...

Once again the 5-seed prevails as PRIOR LAKE beats HOLY FAMILY/WACONIA 2-1..

However, the surprise of the night was 2 seeded TONKA needing OT to beat 7-seeded CHASKA/CHANHASSEN (2-1).

gwg by Bella Bertogliat, asst Maggie Nicholson, Lacy Martin

Saturday is going to be a busy day with 29 games.

SECTIONS 4AA,5AA,6AA,8AA & 4A start their QUARTERFINALS today

SECTIONS 1AA,3AA,7AA,1A,3A & 7A are having SEMIFINALS today...

Curious, are overtime periods in sections not 8 minutes in length like they are in the regular season?

I believe it goes this way:

After a 3 minute rest, he first OT is 8 minutes followed by a resurface. Then it is a 17 minute period, 3 minute rest, then another 8 minute OT, then resurface. It continues this way until a goal is scored.

Great to see that many close 1st round games!

That's the way I understand it, same way for the state tourney

No overtime needed in this one:

Ouch, a 13 goal game is no fun for anyone. Remembering some of Irondale's great players of the past - Meghan Lowrence, Gina McDonald and Sam Donovan come to mind - I hate to see any program fall on such hard times. :(

sometimes things happen and it ends up a lot to a little which is not fun for either team. but looking at the Edina box score, they scored two power play goals in the last 1:30 of the game including having their ms. hockey finalists on the ice. One would think it would be a good time to put some other kids on the ice in those situations.

I agree. It’s seems to be a good time to let your deeper lines (2nd line power play) get some playing time for many reasons. I wonder if they thought that maybe padding the stat sheet might help in the Ms Hockey run?... who knows for sure. I surly hope not however. But this has happened many times over the years with other teams. I’m not sure asking your better players to hold back is good idea, but playing your third and forth lines is always good for playing experience, and to get some touches of the puck on run away games like this.

First, I don't think they have released the finalists for Ms Hockey, semifinalist yes. Of course stat padding takes place in these type of games, HM and Edina aren't the only ones...It is kind of the nature of the beast, especially in play-offs when coaches are reluctant to tighten the reigns...Heck, since we are pre-announcing Ms. Hockey finalists, the 2017-18 winner is Taylor Heise....great player...all she did last night was have 7 goals & 2 assists in a 10-0 win over Austin..last goal coming with 8 secs left in the 3rd period to seal the victory. Obviously, Red Wing coach Scott Haley could have tightened the reigns but chose not to...

Anyone care to pick one team in each class that was not seeded No. 1 in their section that will make it to the big dance? (excluding 7A where a non-No. 1 is already assured).

I'll go with South St. Paul in 4A and Maple Grove in 5AA.

Yikes...glad they called off the dogs with 30 seconds to go and kept it at 15-0. Shots and goals per period are remarkable.

1st period - shots 34/1 goals 8/0
2nd period - shots 36/1 goals 4/0
3rd period - shots 26/0 goals 3/0
------------------
shots 96/2 goals 15/0

Makes me wonder how close 96 shots comes to setting a new State record :?:

Oops, the Crimson go down to Blaine by score of 1-3. The teams were pretty evenly matched, after having split their two regular season games, each by 3-0 scores. Best of luck to the Bengals Friday night!
