2023 Section 4AA Playoffs

Post by HSPuckFan »

This seems to be a section as up in the air as any in the state. It honestly wouldn't shock me to see a 5 or 6 seed playing for a section title. Also of note.According to the MSHSL website,it looks like quarterfinal Saturday is back to being all played at Aldrich.I for one love that,it makes for a fantastic day of playoff hockey.

Should be interesting. I could see anyone beating anyone. I'm not sure any upset, even in the QF, would surprise me. This is the year for someone that never goes to make a run...

If it was up to me I'd have the seedings as follows

1 HM
2 WBL
3 Stillwater
4 Gentry
5 East Ridge
6 Woodbury
7 Roseville
8 Tartan

I just feel that Hill's strength of schedule and going 1-0-1 vs Stillwater & White Bear should give them the slight edge.

First off, any of the top 3 can beat either of the other 2, so I don't see those as upsets, except in the narrowest of senses. The 3 seed could beat the 1 and 2, and no one should be the least bit surprised.

That said, I can easily see the 4, 5, or 6 seeds pulling off an upset. But they'd need pull off two upsets to win the section, and that's pretty difficult to see. If gentry were 4, and upset Hill, could they beat Stillwater or WB? Anything is possible, but to my mind, I'd say it's better than 95% that there would not a section champion other than Hill, WB, or Stillwater. Stranger things have happened, but not very often.

I'd put the odds of one of the top three seeds losing to a lower at about...um....25%. And events with a one in four chance of happening all the time.

I understand, head to head competition for seedlings, but I don’t think a tie and an overtime win outside in below. Zero weather is very conclusive.

That's fair.I wouldn't hate seeing WBL as the top seed.It would be fun to see them in St.Paul again.Maybe this is the year they can end the losing streak.

My stance has changed a bit on this over the last week. I think Hill was slightly in line to get the top seed last week - which was around the time of the WBL v Stillwater and Hill v STA games. I still think there's an argument that can be made for Hill, but now believe WBL is probably going to get it. In the last week Hill lost to STA 1-0 and got pretty well handled by Maple Grove. WBL on the other hand beat Stillwater, beat CDH and seems to be handily beating Rosemount. At this point and as I previously said, Hill doesn't even have a top 10 win. It's great you have a hard schedule, but at some point you need to beat one of those hard teams. They have yet to do that. At this point the best Hill can finish is .500, and even that may not happen. I think if Hill could have won a couple of these last games against top 10 teams and/or WBL stumbled against their last few opponents the story might have been different. But right now WBL is hot, Hill is not. And the body of work just can't justify a #1 seed for Hill.

Gentry beats Champlin Park

They've now won 5 in a row, including wins over Blake, Champlin Park & Chanhassen. At this point I'm not sure I'd want the #1 in 4AA (assuming Gentry is the #4 seed). Gentry is playing their best hockey right now. Getting outshot badly against some of these teams, but finding ways to win.

That is interesting since East Ridge split with Roseville, beat Woodbury twice, beat Eagan who beat Roseville, beat Mounds View who Roseville and I think beat Roseville 5-2 vs a 1 goal game with and empty netter.

Yeah, you're right, I overlooked East Ridge sweeping Woodbury. I was looking at Roseville beating East Ridge, Woodbury beating Roseville 6-1, and Roseville having a much better record than East Ridge. Not to mention Roseville beat Stillwater 5-1 and tied Cretin. I would have a really hard time sliding a team with a resumé like that all the way down to 7.

We saw the Bears smoke a hot Rosemount team 5-1 yesterday . They looked very good, except for a couple undisciplined penalties

We had seen Pios a few times earlier when they were down several kids , but not recently since Ben has been back .

Usually respect head to head , but in this case the head to head was so slim and the record difference is so big , even factoring in HM SOS , that # 1 vs #2 seeding is a very close call IMHO. I guess I’d lean to the Bears .

Not so sure makes huge diff this year , as Gentry with Zolezzi in goal is capable of beating either in semi on a hot night .

The building staff at X loves Lex and his teams. The kids are very respectful of the building and all who they encounter, Lex insists on that. When they leave the the locker room, there is not so much as a single piece of tape on the floor. Momma isn't there, so the kids know to pick up after themselves, and leave the room as clean as it was when they entered it.

Lex sets the standard. Have you ever seen him blow his top at a bad call? Nope. He models the respect for others that he expects his players to show as well. When players have committed serious infractions of team or school rules, he's booted them from the team, no matter how good they were.

Is it any wonder parents are willing to trust their kids to Lex? I'd do it in a heartbeat.

My reaction to this comment is the same as that of FDR when he commented on the antipathy uber wealthy industrialists had for him: I welcome their hate.

It makes the wins so much sweeter. Nothing hushes the crowd at the X as much as a Pioneer goal. Nothing.

When Hill and Edina meet at the X, Hornet goals get a very slight applause. It's subtle, but detectable. We're just slightly more hated.

Not by me.
Hill has for the last 50 years been one of my favorite teams.

But it would crack me up if they did. Hill is likely to be in a one goal game against anyone. I watched Tartan outplay them for a period early in the year. This is White Bear Lake's year to go. Hill is young and will be much improved next year.
