Sportsmanship

Post by EHS2006 » Thu Nov 24, 2005 1:30 am

It seems that this year all schools are pushing hard for sportmanship, along with the MSHSL. At East the new activity director has set strict lines on what can and cannot be said or done. So lets hear it what do you think pushes the line and what is in good taste? Because we all know that hockey is trash talk maybe it should just be limited to just players?

Isn't sportsmanship pretty much common sense? Is it really necessary to have a guideline of what are acceptable actions and speech?

Sports don't build character, sports reveal it.

Personally, I could get along without the "seasons over" chant. You have two teams on the ice that just gave it all they had. One team came up short on the scoreboard, and they get reminded of the loss (for seniors their last) by a group of fans, many of which would have a difficult time standing in skates.

It is very enjoyable to see fans competing with chants back and forth during a game. Also fun to see creative ideas (i.e. Bloomington fans reading paper during other teams lineup anouncement, etc). Great to see kids having fun in the stands, part of what HS hockey is about.

Season is just starting, have fun this year. Good luck to all teams.

what do you think will happen to the albert lea kid that sucker punched the new ulm player after the game tuesday 11-30? the refs gave him a game misconduct to sit out the next game. what happens to the player from the sportsmanship contract the players have to sign and play by? does the A-D of the school enforce the rules on this kid?

Hotshot, You should know that the kid will get more than the 1 game mandated by the MSHSL. Roy N. is as full of integrity as any coach and he will handle the situation properly. I am guessing 5 or 6 games.

In 2004 in the semi finals at sat on the East side first game, and ofcourse Rapids side the 2nd game. The stuff coming out of the East kids mouths made them all look like white trash. I know some of their kids were good, but a lot of bad ones.

Then the Grand Rapids fans, not one swear word the entire game. Now that's something to be proud of.

Cursing is for individuals with weak minds expressing themselves forcefully.

So what would you do to a kid that throw's his stick across the ice at the end of a 3-3 game? I forgot, the kid also wouldn't shake the opposing coaches hand. Send the kid to B bantam's?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... joshdog at: 11/30/05 11:42 pm

Well the one thing I do know is that his coach or his father did nothing. Bitterness will get you nowhere. Playing for AL varsity would have been a blessing for this kid his jr. year as he has turned into a great kid and a very good hockey player.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... joshdog at: 11/30/05 11:56 pm

Joshdog. I think you got the wrong person on this stick throwing thing because the ref would of taken care of the problem if there was a problem at all.

"SEASON'S OVER" CHANT IS A GOOD ONE, IF THEY DIDN'T WANT TO HEAR IT THEY SHOULD HAVE WON. AND 5 OR 6 GAMES FOR A SUCKER PUNCH? IT MUST HAVE BEEN PRETTY BAD, I'M NOT SAYING I'D CONDONE THAT BUT IT'S A PRETTY SHORT SEASON FOR A 6 GAME SUSPENSION, BUT I DIDN'T SEE THE ACT EITHER. 2-GAMES AT FIRST GLANCE FOR THE SUCKER PUNCH.

Season's over chant

Post by Knowlze » Thu Dec 01, 2005 11:10 am

That may happen in the "dream" world; that you can just say your going to win, and you win. But in the real world, both teams intend on winning and give it their best, and only one team wins on the scoreboard.

For their efforts, they get yelled at by some hockey "dreamers" in the stands. How about some respect for the effort. Respect will go a long way towards good sportsmanship, that is probably not needed in the "dream" world.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ER, what took you so long to "strike back"? Just needed a little support from icedreamer first, I guess.

What is good sportsmanship to you, or do you need the manual about what to say and what not to say?

I wonder if the "season's over" chant is addressed in the manual?

Support from icedreamer? Haha! First off, no support needed. Second, I don't like people that yell ALL THE TIME. Just not my style

Personally, I like chants and cheers that are original and make you laugh a little even if you are on the other side. Lately ER hasn't had much of that, I guess its just easier to say whatever the other fans said during the 1st period when we are winning in the 3rd. But anyway, I didn't know there was a manual. They should definitely let me look at it and make a few revisions here and there.

elliott, East? Are you kidding me? At least go with something like GR or someone good. I would like to go with Grand Rapids because White and Smith are a couple of fine young men and are on my Christmas Card list, but...
being and old (and I stress old) Iron Range Conference athlete (and I do not stress athlete) cheering for GR before they get to state is hard to do.

I like Sneep, Peltoma, and blonde Baker from Brainerd, but watching the Btown beat up my Bjacks in fball it is hard to cheer for them, also.

Cloquet would get my vote as they too are Lumberjacks and Kyle and Reid and that little Johnson kid are also on my list of good guys, so they are high on the list.

Elk River being a METRO team makes it hard to cheer for them, but the Ostroots are a great family and grandpa Dick is an old teacher of mine. And my brother is a stop light away down south there in Rogers, but just can't do it.

So, I am left with Duluth East. Turnbull and Trachsall and Downing are fun to watch. BUT one of my best friends is the HS principal there so I go with Duluth East as the Section 7AA favorite.

Perfect hockey logic.

Oh and email your address to me and I will supply you with a copy of my book (authographed at that).

I must say, that is better hockey logic than most on this board. Or at least it makes semi-good sense to me.

But I must say, although I can see your point about ER being Metro, you shouldn't hold that against them. If they were in 4AA as they were last year, you seemed to like them then. They got moved into 7AA and I'm fairly positive it wasn't by choice. So they should be 1b to your East 1a ( btw).

Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... k at: 12/1/05 12:49 pm

The manual refers to the "strict lines" referred to in the first post. I am sure the "strict lines" will be documented in an "Appropriate Conduct Manual" to be distributed to all fans at a hockey game.

If the manual is not followed, and in possession, an usher will escort the fan from the arena.

So will this include the chants such as "Season's Over"? What exactly is too harsh? I don't agree with the personal attack ones, but exactly where will the line be drawn?

Elk River AA State Champions- 2001 Boys & 2004 Girls

All good questions, that I am sure will be "appropriately" addressed by the Activities Director, so no feelings are hurt.
