Support for Jefferson

Post by sloppyice » Tue Nov 22, 2005 12:59 pm

I am suprised to see jefferson so high in early rankings.
I believe they lost too much from last year to be looked
at early as a top 5 team.

Brian Connelly made everybody better on that team. including Lee. His transistion skills opened the ice for all the forwards. Wild and Overman had great years. The offense and defense seemed to be all built around Brian's ability to move the puck. Diter was the only other defenseman that consistently saw the ice in tight situations.

Levine, Dieter and Lee are all good players, but I just don't see the depth right now necessary to compete with teams that have 3 or even 2 good lines.

Their depth is no more than Burnsville, AV, Rosemount or EP.
Then they still have to get through Benilde, Minnetonka or Edina in sections.

Much of their ranking comes from the quality of the players you mentioned and others that you did not, and the strength and depth of the program and tradition. Brian was a great player, no doubt, but you are WAY overstating his impact, as tremendous as it was. To say their depth is no better than Burnsville, AV, and Rosemount (Rosemount???????) is crazy and uninformed.

Name the last Jefferson team since 1980 that didn't have 2 good lines? I know I can't.

I agree they should not be ranked as high as #2, I put them at #4-#5 or somewhere in that range, but rankings are not all that useful. I think what you'll see at the end of the year is one of the top teams in the state, like every year, rank them where you will.

They will be fine this year. They have a lot of experience this year. I think LaBombard, Shupe, and Roberts will step up and have big years. They still have Lee, Levine, and Dieter. My worry is for next year. They only have 5 non-seniors on the roster. This year, though, they will be fine. They should be top 5, even with the loss of Connelly, Overman, Wild, etc.

Just thinking about it, what if none of the players that left Jefferson to play hockey elsewhere stayed? The roster they have now, plus Peter Mueller, Erik Johnson (pre-AHA), Nick Jaskowiak, to name a few. All programs lose some of their top players, but if these 3 would have stayed, this could have been a very dominant team.

-------------------

Catholics have churches, fat people have Wisconsin, and I have the Pawtucket Patriot brewery.- Peter Griffin
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p100.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... oren808 at: 11/22/05 3:26 pm

Media,

Uninformed? I would expect the name "mediaguide'
would imply you have access to media guides! Rosemount
returns over 90% of their goals, is losing 2 seniors and returns significant Lake varsity experience. I would expect
them to use that experience to their benefit. They may be 3 lines deep,

Brian Connelly was the heart and soul of the Jefferson team.
Without Brian, Jefferson's year would have undoubtly ended much earlier. The team was built around his skills and ice time of 50%+ of shifts.

Bvlle and AV return just as many quality players as Jefferson
does, I would not be surprised by a 3th to 5th spot in the Lake for the powder blue.

What ifs do not work. IE what if Johnson, Carmen, Frazee, Hagemo and kaiser would have stayed at AHA. I am sorry to say bit they would have been extremely hard to beat the last 4 - 5 years....
Just an example.
________________________________
Academy of Holy Angels
2005 GIRLS STATE CHAMPS!
2002 & 2005 BOYS STATE CHAMPS!!
GO STARS!!

Mediaguide;

You ask for the last Jefferson team that did not go two lines deep? I do not have to go too far back to name one "2003" not one division one player other then Connelly and only two players even playing hockey anymore other then him.

I was surprised at first to see them ranked that high, but after I thought about some other teams I think that they are in a group of teams that could be considered number two in the state.

I think Holy Angels definately has to be number one at this time. When you return two goalies and all of that offense who could realistically be ahead of them at this time. Moorhead, Hill Murray, White Bear and Centennial are also in the mix for number two.

Sloppyice;
I have to agree with you about Connelly's impact. When you talk to players on the team last year they have so much respect for him and time will tell if some of the other players can fill some of that role this year.

I am sorry to say bit they would have been extremely hard to beat the last 4 - 5 years....

I realize that. Thats why I said that every program loses some of its top players. But I have seen NHL draft sites that both Mueller and Johnson are projected to be both top 5 picks.

Also, AHA has the ability to get who they want to play hockey. When you are a private school committed and devvoted to winning championships, like AHA is, you tend to be able to get more players to want to play for you. Public schools such as Jefferson, while they still get players to come to their school, like Barr this year, tend to lose players to schools like AHA and Benilde, as well as to USHL teams. Johnson and Polacek are examples of AHA players that developed through the Jefferson program.

Having said all that, going away from WHAT IF's and back into ACTUALITY, I would say that AHA and Jefferson might be the top 2 teams this year. They each have a lot of returners coming back. Centennial, WBL, and Moorhead are also very good. My top 5:

1. AHA
2. Jefferson
3. WBL
4. Centennial
5. Moorhead

These 5 teams stick out from the rest of the pack, IMO.
-------------------

Catholics have churches, fat people have Wisconsin, and I have the Pawtucket Patriot brewery.- Peter Griffin

Don't be such a whiner, Sloppyice. I'm sorry I said that you're uninformed, OK? If you want to keep on talking up Rosemount, that's your business, go nuts. I'm sure the rest of the hockey community feels the same way about Rosemount as you do.

OK - I'd agree that Connelly was obviously THE key to last year's team, I was nothing but complimentary of him in my post, but there was alot of heart and soul to go around. Ex: Overman playing more than half of the year with one arm. That the team was built around Connelly is true on one level and not true on another. Given that he was on the ice 50% of the time, that seems a bit rhetorical, doesn't it?

While it may be true that BV and AV return as many quality players as Jefferson, and I have serious doubts about that, but even if that is true, you haven't even begun to deal with the players stepping in. Good luck waiting for the 3rd - 4th place Lake finish for Jefferson, Sloppy! And don't knock my handle - that's making it personal and its darn right lame of you.

Shutout - the 2003 team had two solid HS lines, no doubt about it, you feel otherwise - fine. While the loss of Connelly is huge, I never said otherwise, Jefferson has a history of losing great players and still putting out top teams. Like I said before, I'd rank them behind WBL and Centennial, and possibly HM now that I think about it, to start off, but they'll be one of the top teams in the state at the end of the year.

Debate

Post by juniorhockey » Tue Nov 22, 2005 10:59 pm

I think this has been an interesting debate. You BOTH bring up good facts.

I think 'opinions' are the only thing comming into play when you ask when they have NOT had two solid lines.

When I look at the Lake conference I would be right on with you guys. I don't have any inside info on who has transfered or anything, but I saw my fair amount of games last year.

Apple Valley lost the majority of it's scoring (no secret there) but with Beggs comming in and them have Fischer (my opinion: Best Def. in the State) and Medvec (a for sure D1 guy) that's as solid of a trifecta as anyone could ask for.

EP always has talent. I thought that they lost a majority of there Def. from last year and the goalie, but I might be wrong.

Burnsville should be solid but I'm not sure if I can remember when they put something together last.

I'll be watching Rosemount as a possible sleeper. I tink they have NO chance of winning the Lake but should finish higher then in years past. They have solid experienced Def. And a couple forwards. If they got some guys from the Bantam A team from lst year they might be alright as they were good.

Chaska should be about the same as last year. And who knows about Lakeville with the splits.

Jefferson is always good so we should expet the same. Levine is growing into one of the State's best power Forwards. I really think he's a got good future going for him. Dieter anchors the Def. core which lost a lot of depth aside from B.C. I hardly saw Roberts play last year so I don't know where he'll be at. Lee is obviously tallented as well. So Top line is established and after that I'd expect typical Jefferson players to emerge and rise up.

My Guess:

1. Apple Valley
2. Jefferson
3. EP
4. Burnsville
5. Rosemount

I look forward to someone bringing this post back up in January to make me look stupid

I love Fischer, Medvec is solid, and Beggs is solid, but it'll be tough for AV if they have to pin their hopes on 2 defensemen and a goalie. They have a shot like everyone does, but that's a pretty thin argument without several consistent scorers to boot against the better teams.

One quick comment

Post by HockeyMan05 » Tue Nov 22, 2005 11:22 pm

I have one quick comment:

On regards to the "what if's"

What if that other bloomington school (kennedy) had not lost all their players to other schools? It was a long time ago that this senior class was in Peewee's, but if i remember correctly...the peewee A state championship game was between jefferson and kennedy. Everyone overlooks kennedys program, but if you take a good look in the recents years, you might be shocked to realize how competitive some of their youth teams have been. The problem lies at the varsity level with players leaving for various reasons...sorry to get off the topic but I thought i might share this because most people dont even realize there is another school in that same city as the jaguars.

Being from bloomington, I hate them on the ice but respect them off it, so I'll go ahead and support their #2 ranking...

media

sorry about the reference to the handle. that was uncalled for. Please accept my apology.

last year's jefferson team had a lot of chemistry (success will breed that) ruff, wild and overman were linemates at every level (all year long) since mites. I just think it will be very difficult to replace that. They do have some talented boys back, but I just don't think they are much stronger as a team on paper than most of the Lake. We will get an early perspective as they do play AV within the next 10 days.

I only bring Rosemount up as an example. I think the past couple seasons give them motivation to succeed. They bring significant experience to the rink and with a new coach a new beginning.

The powder blue will be a good team, i just don't see them a top 5 at the start of 2005-06

I must admit that I have very little knowledge of the incomming talent on most teams. This is my first season being a "fan" rather then a player, so I haven't really looked into much lately. But based on my experience playing against (and knowing) many of these Jefferson players...I would say that their ranking is legit. They return 10 varsity experienced players from last years squad, 9 of them seniors. With the tradition of their youth program I would expect to see some incomming talent that could fill the remaining holes.

Once again I havent looked into the Centennial/WBL type teams to compare Jefferson with but this is just my opinion from what I know.

With regard to rosemount...I agree with sloppy that they may be able to contend this year with all the experience they have returning (16 players?). My only question is how they will manage to replace Beggs.

I don't know about Andy Kranz, but either his brother or cousin (forgot which), KC Kranz, is a junior defenseman on Varsity for the Jaguars.
-------------------

Catholics have churches, fat people have Wisconsin, and I have the Pawtucket Patriot brewery.- Peter Griffin

Jefferson will obviously have a great team this year once again. However, as other people have been saying, the Jaguars will not have the team that they did last year. Connelly was a huge addition to the team along with Overman, Wild and Ruff, but there are some great additions to the team this year. Juniors Josh Levine and newcomer Nick Olson will be great this year.. along with the return of Matt LaBombard and Baylor Dieter, they will be a tough team to beat.

This years team will really have to work hard but the players have the talent and determination to get where they want to go. I think that the Jags have another shot at state.

Teams like Apple Valley and EP will be great this year too, but it's gonna take alot to get through the Jags.

anyone at the game yesterday?? what are your thoughts...

Personally.. I think Kranz was looking really good. He kept the puck out of the Jefferson zone for most of the game and had 2 assists. Levine also of course looked great, his speed and stick handling basically makes him unable to stop...

Reviewing the Jefferson game v Kennedy, a few things stuck out for me besides how well the established talent played. The most pleasant surprise was sophomore Tom O'Donnell who showed excellent speed and composure, he'll need to adjust a great deal more but did a great job. Ben Roberts looks much improved, and Kranz had a solid first game. Nick Olson seemed hesitant and needs to assert himself more, but he has good potential and will come around quickly. Schofield had a great game as an aggressive checking wing.

Basically, each player with their first starting varsity role did extremely well for the first game. The Jags deserve a top 3-6 ranking for whatever that's worth.

Mediaguide: I also enjoyed your review of the game. Everything you said is along the lines of my opinions as well.

To me, Jefferson has always had a good hockey program so every year their varsity team gives most teams a run for their money. During yesterdays game I noticed no major mistakes by the Jaguars, and from what I saw they only lost 1 face off. Not bad for a first game right?

The players also seemed really solid. Josh Levine did what he always does and impressed the crowd with his incredible speed and stick handling. He is really going to be one to watch this year.

Forwards Matt LaBombard (who scored the last goal) and Nick Olson will also be great players this season. Olson looks sharp out on the ice and looks as if he can really move the puck around. Keep an eye out for both of these guys.

And of course, Austin Lee impressive as always. Although he's got some great defense backing him up, he didn't let a goal in. Hopefully this year's D can back him up as well as Connelly did last year.

So there is my thoughts on this year's Jaguars... they're off to a good start.

This is the start of something big

Jefferson Jottings

Post by koren808 » Sun Nov 27, 2005 10:18 pm

I agree with pretty much with everyone, but I personally think that Roberts tries to do to much at times. He has a lot of talent, but he tends to skate around with the puck for a long strtch of time. But he looked pretty good besides that.

Kranz had a nice 1st varsity game. 2 assists, and he can check pretty well.

O'Donnell will be a very good player, once he get used to playing HS hockey. There is a big difference from Bantam A's to Varsity hockey.

I agree with MediaGuide's and hockeyislife's take on Olson also. By the end of the year, he might be one of Jefferson's best forwards.

Lastly, I am really looking forward to the Levine, LaBombard, and Hovey line. I think Hovey will get a lot of great chances this year with this line. He had a bunch of chances against Kennedy, but he just missed.
-------------------

Catholics have churches, fat people have Wisconsin, and I have the Pawtucket Patriot brewery.- Peter Griffin

Roberts will definitely need to move the puck more and more quickly, he looked like he has made some progress on that and hopefully will continue to improve and settle down.

AV game Thursday night will be a good one in many ways, especially looking forward to how each goalie plays. AV will play tough in their own rink.
