New Junior team in Owatonna? Anyone know?

Post by HockE7 » Thu Mar 17, 2005 5:56 pm

I heard that there is a new junior team forming in Owatonna next season! Does anyone have any information on this team? Are they USHL, NAHL, or something different? When will the team actually be formed? Tell me if you know any information.

If this team happens it is going to be a team added to the NAHL, and I believe their going to be called the Southern Minnesota Express.

I know that this team is for sure happening, as part of the NAHL. They have been recruiting players from local high school teams. Don't look for them to be too good however, as they are trying to go mainly southern minnesota kids to boost fan base. Should be fun though, as long as they dont steal any kids from our team.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

New teams

The NAHL is adding an Owatonna team as well as an Iowa team out of Mason City called the North Iowa Outlaws. Both teams are starting from scatch so it will definatly be a building process.

Pat Cullen has, or will be named coach of the franchise. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

The Express have named Pat Cullen as their head coach. It will be interesting to see what kind of team they can put together for next year. Hopefully the Owatonna and Faribault communities will support this new team.

I talked to an Owatonna youth hockey coach last week who told me the team will also play some games at Faribault, presumably at Shattuck's new rink. Makes sense, since Murray is supposedly one of the owners.

Santa Fe is not coming to town. They are going to stay put.

This is a start-up team. Cullen was named the coach - he had some good competition for this job, one the things the Express wants is to have a coach that is willing to relocate to the Owatonna area.

Yes, they may play some games at the Shattuck arena since a couple members of the ownership group have kids playing at Shattuck. However, the city of Owatonna would like to have 100% of the games there. They did a $800,000 addition and renovation for the team and they do want the money to stay.

The only way you will see home games outside of the Four Seasons arena is because of scheduling issues.

Owatonna NAHL Team

Post by onedogtoomany » Sat Mar 19, 2005 12:31 am

Owatonna will fill their roster according to the NAHL league rules:

1) They can recruit all the players they want as long as those players are within the age limits of the league (16 to 21) and those players are not affiliated with any other NAHL team.

2) Tendered Players: I believe each team in the league can tender 10 players. These usually end up being the top players the team's want.

3) Drafted Players: After all the player tenders for each team have been signed, any non-tendered players are then eligible for the league draft. This is the next level of players the team's want. I think the draft goes for 8-12 rounds.

4) Tryout Camps: Players that are not tendered or drafted can be invited or attend open team tryouts. A few players from these tryouts make the team, usually not many. Tryouts are a good fundraiser for the teams. Usually, they cost $100 to $150 dollars per player. Actually, it's not too bad a deal for the players since they get to play 3-4 high level scrimmages vs some very good talent. I think it is a good measuring stick for many young players that want to find out if they can play and keep up with this higher level.

5) Trades with other teams. Teams conduct trades and other player transactions all the time. Rosters for some teams turnover a lot before and during the season. I believe there is a rule restricting trading high school age players.

Owatonna's Franchise will go through all of these steps in order to put together a team. The better they do, the better the team.

It will not be in the fairground arena, but would have to agree it will happen sooner rather than later. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

I'm hearing two groups. One looking in the Stillwater/Somerset area, and the other in the north metro. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">
