asking or allowing

Post by elliott70 » Sat Mar 26, 2005 4:07 pm

I know at least 3 kids that are considering attending Warroad high school next year.
Why?
Becasue they can.
Were they recruited?
Not be the high school. And to my knowledge, not by anyone in Warroad. All 3 have different reasons why they want to be there.
I know of a person in warraod that has asked kids to move there and play hockey. And this is not a crime. The person is not asociated with Marvin windowsnor the school. He knows these people and feels Warroad hockey would be a good fit for them. Is it right? wrong? Is it fair to he kids there? Who has all the right answers to all all the questions.

There are jobs in Warroad. There is hockey in Warroad. Put the 2 together and what do you get Warroad recruiting. But to say the Warroad high school recruits - well if Cary Eades or now Fermy and Alber, or any administrator did this, they are in violation of HS ruels and should be punished. But no one ahs proof of it (or even an inkling of it.) Do people in Warroad recruit in one form or fashion, my guess is yes. But do the people in IFalls recruit in this way, or Moorhead, or Elk River or Mankato?

They do in Bemidji because I do it. (I am not associatiated with the HS.) But if a kid is not satisfied where he is (and I am not talking about satisfied with a coach or the school system) and I know the family, I offer Bemidji as an alternative. Whether it is hockey or some other sport (or not sport person), I am always promoting Bemidji.

Bottom line, if you have proof that Warroad HS (or any HS) has recruited illegally, then you have a responsibilty of presenting that proof. If you don't then you are guilty.

But the recruiting that takes place is not illegal and has become an advanced stage of being proud of your community.
Accept it. It happens.

Great post elliott, maybe this will clear up some things for all the people that come on here and bash Warroad for recruiting. It is true that people who live in Warroad might ask a player or their family if they want to come to town and play hockey, but this doesn't make the whole town, school, and hockey program guilty of recruiting. Why do you think that that MSHSL has never done anything to Warroad. Because they aren't breaking any rules. Also, people say a kid was told if he can come to Warroad and play hockey and and his parents will get job's at Marvin's. Well why don't we let everyone in on a little secret that as long as you have a pulse and half a brain you can get a job at Marvin's, it doesn't matter if your kids play hockey or you even have kids.

carp.. You just don't seem to get it do you. Kids and parents decide to move and when that happens they get played ahead of local kids. The coaches make that decision . Schools don't tell the coaches who to play. Coaches play the players they think they can win with. agree with it or not. TRF played Collin, Melbo and Holen and 3 kids who came up through the program sat. That's life. These were maybe encouraged to come, maybe they decided to on their own. The Melbo kid was shopping and TRF took him. Roseau decides to play Martinson ahead of kid who came up through the program. Roseau plays 3 move ins on their bantam team instead of 3 who started out as mites. Your school has done the same, don't tell me they have not. Agree or disagree, that the way it works. The 3 kids from Bemidji who are thinking about Warroad could decide to go anywhere, maybe class A is good enough. I would think that if they were any good they would go to Roseau and win the real state championship, Why go to Warraod? Your town or school must be one of the ones with a piss poor program with kids leaving. Instead of bitching on this board, why don.t you fix it so they stay home. I only thing I can think is that somehow you get some sort of fix bitching about the other towns cheating and that is why you lose all the time.

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME. THEY COME INVITED OR NOT. WARROAD IS GUILTY OF BUILDING IT TOO GOOD. THE THING YOU DON'T KNOW, IS THE NUMBER OF KIDS THAT ARE DISCOURAGED FROM COMING TO WARROAD. THE NUMBER WOULD SURPRISE YOU.

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckey>Salol Hockey at: 3/27/05 4:57 am

I totally understand the situation. Warroad had no titles and limited success before open enrollment and Class A. That is a simple fact.

Carp.. Kids were going to Warroad, Roseau and many others schools before open enrollment. It was called guardianship. I think the Class A, Eades and maybe the new arena had a alot to do with state titles, Open enrollments has made it easier and the beat goes on.

I would suggest that you take 5 or 6 from Bemidji because they are brutal and have been for 5 or 6 years. They are by far the biggest school district in the area and have just a terrible program. I do not see any help for Warroad coming from Bemidji. The only two players they had last year were seniors.

With open enrolllment comes a lot of headaches in sports. Hopkins in basketball is one. I don't say it's recruiting but it's certainly used for the wrong reasons. Who's fault? Society and the programs who let it happen in great numbers.

I have said all along that Elk River and Duluth East are the biggest offenders of this in AA and Warroad in Class A. Is it illegal? Not that we know of. In my humble opinion it's bad for sports and society in general.

I'm a huge Centennial fan and they have done it right! Last years title team were kids that ALL grew up together. This years team was very good as well but because of movement to Ann Arbor and other schools they lost some depth. Their youth program is second to none and they should be a power for years to come. With that said if the abuse of open enrollment continues it skews the results. Good for hockey? NO WAY!!

I won't use the word recruiting but I will say that programs can do something about a lot of movement. MOST programs in the state play with their own kids and an occasional transfer. A few however thrive because of open enrollment. You can make excuses all day but it's not defendable!!

Salol- You better watch what you are saying before you rip other programs. "You build it and they will come" is like saying come to Warroad we don't have any better talent than you so you can come and play for us. If Warroad has such a great feeder program how come all of these outsiders can just walk in and play in one of the so called greatest programs in the land? If Warroad had such great talent and develops players why can Joe Schmoe walk in a play their. So don't rip the programs where this talent that makes your team comes from. With out outside help Warroad would just be a another speck on the hockey map. Hockey town USA is a good name for Warroad after all it sure seems they get their talent from the whole USA and Canada too.

Warroad JV/Varsity roster of 04-05

Eric Olimb-COMPLETELY homegrown
Allen McBride-Homegrown
kirk olimb-Home grown
andy Larson-just moved to warroad this last year (but is only on JV, and is working his ass off)
Brent Monshaugen-Homegrown
Kyle Krahn-Homegrown
Andy Hegstad-homegrown
Kyle mohrbacher-Homegrown
Andy Brandt-homegrown
Cody Mack-homegrown
Zach Larson-Homegrown
James Erickson-homegrown
David Larson-Moved with Andy...is a senior...so recruiting point is moot...who'd recruit for a year?
Ben Bengston-VERY homegrown
Aaron Marvin-homegrown
TJ Oshie-moved to warroad 3 years ago
Bobby anacabe-homegrown
Chris Caskey-homegrown
Joe Harren-VERY homegrown
Jake Bahnmiller-homegrown
Jimmy Gabriel-moved to warroad this last year
J.P. Because warroad's got sooooo many move ins...
Yeah, TJ made a HUGE difference. But Jimmy is on the third line, and doesn't do THAT MUCH damage...dave does a heck of a lot, but it's just this last year. Andy's going to be awesome, but hey. It's one player that hasn't grown up in warroad. Who doesn't have at least one player like that? A single player isn't going to make or break a good team.

P.S. Joe Schmoe walking in and playing? If any joe schmoe could...they would. And they aren't. Plus, if good ol' joe would come onto the team just 'like that,' his name wouldn't be joe schmoe

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... eyHoney at: 3/27/05 1:01 pm

The point of the thread was/is

how important is recruitment and when should it start

MY ORIGINAL POINT was that if you want to win (define how you wish - but my definition is a chance to get to the holy grail (State)) you need to recruit.

Now, recruiting is always done - but if done right it startw with the kindergarten, first, or second grader.

If I am a father fo a five year old and I want my kid to 'win (per above)' I hope the kids starting out in hockey are good athletes, smart kids,a nd hard workers. Judging those traits in a 5 year old is difficult. So how do I help my kid. I recruit.
Instead of 20 five year olds playing, I try and get 40 five year olds to play hockey. The chances are doubled.

Then to continue recruiting I help the local associatins find (and pay if necessary) coaches that can and will teach kids.

I keep recruiting (dollars), by joining the fundraising committee and help pay (or buy more) ice for these 40 kids.

The recruiting definition can go on and on...

But that way my 1 of 40 kids has a better shot to make it to state. With 40 kids his odds of making the HS team are not as good, but there is a place for him to play, whether it is A or B hockey, Jr Gold etc...
But I know he will be part of the 'larger' team that now has a chance to make it to state.
And if playing varsity is his true dream, then he will have to work hard and make sacrifices so he is that 4th liner (or star).

So get off your butt and RECRUIT - for your kids good, for the associations good, for the good of the HS team, but more so

for the good of hockey in Minnesota.

Thanks for posting that. That should put to rest a lot of the Warroad bashers. Also, I dont remember the full story of T.J. Oshie's family, but arent they originally from Warroad or something? Someone should post that story on here to shut up the Warroad haters even more. I remember when I heard it 3 years ago I thought to myself that he belonged in Warroad playing hockey all along, and wasnt a "recruit".

Thanks Hockeyhoney..PSE44.. Looks to me like Warroad is doing a poor job of recruiting... My comments on build it refer to BUILD YOUR OWN PROGRAM and quit worrying about Warroad's. Maybe what Warroad does a good job is keeping their own. , other than Oshie and Larson I didn't see any real killer recruits. Both their parents live and work in town. I think hockeyhoney pulled a dirty one on you by listing all the players. Would you call that recruiting ??????? look at the numbers??????? WHAT's it tell you. Check the numbers.....

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p074.ezboard.com/bmnhs.showUserP ... ckey>Salol Hockey at: 3/27/05 3:23 pm

I'm pretty sure Oshie, has direct ties to Warroad and Warroad Hockey.Check into Oshie's family background and you will find that they are related to the legendary hockey great Henry Boucha...

TRFan.. You could very well be right. Warroad has been attracting players from programs with dissatisfied players for years, I just don't think it is as many as people think. TRF and Roseau have also been attracting players over the years. What's your point. Remember, people who live in glass houses. You might been one of them. People like you probably do all the advertising necessary for Warroad as the place to go by continuing to harp on the subject. I would really like to know who actually does "the real recruiting" Warroad or a few other towns. I think warroad is always extra careful because their are under the spotlight. I wonder if your HS coach has a policy on kids moving in, which includes contacting the current coach or AD.
