Poll Main PageFINAL RESULTS: 2004 Internet Steel Tracked Roller Coaster Poll
For the fourth year in a row the same two coasters are at the top, and for the third year in a row Germany's Expedition GeForce outdueled SFNE's Superman: Ride of Steel for #1. The Maryland version of Superman squeaked past Millennium Force to finish a best ever 3rd, Nitro finished 5th, and Top Thrill Dragster finished in sixth. The New York version of Superman:RoS, Apollo's Chariot, and Nemesis finished 7 through 9 and Hersheypark's Storm Runner debuted in the poll by edging Montu for 10th. Several of this year's top ten were reordered manually. This is done due to some rides having more comparisons against rides at the bottom of the poll which moved their winning percentage ahead of other rides that have fewer blemishes (losses + .5*ties) and were preferred by mutual riders. Obviously, a coaster with fewer blemishes that also wins the mutual rider comparison should be moved ahead and these are certainly valid moves as none of the top ten had any losses or ties in the mutual rider comparison with any coaster ranked lower than #24. For this reason, SRoS:NY was moved from 8th to 7th, and Storm Runner from 11th to 10th. The Favorite Wood Coaster category would have placed third this year, losing mutual rider comparisons only to the top two steel coasters by margins of 16-17 and 23-29. Amongst the top five rides, the mutual rider(with a preference) comparisons went as follows: EGF was preferred to SRoS:NE 6 to 3, over SRoS:MD 9-0, over MF 13-4, and over Nitro 11-0. SRoS:NE was preferred to SRoS:MD 36-2, over MF 43-15, and over Nitro 50-4. SRoS:MD was preferred to MF 26-24 and tied Nitro 21-21. MF was preferred to Nitro 40-23. Gouderix again "bottomed" Flashback at the bottom of the poll among much ridden rides, although several coasters with very few riders had lower winning percentages. The mutual rider comparisons between the ~300 coasters/categories (including "Favorite Wood Coaster") that had riders take the poll this year will be available by December 23rd from the website BestRollerCoasterPoll.com. All 201 ballots (anonymized) will also be available by December 23rd. This delay will hopefully prevent bandwidth problems for the website. The following results are presented in a tabular format showing 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 placements, giving a better feel for trends and consistencies in the poll. When viewing this chart, one should expect a coaster's rank to drop slightly from year to year due to additional coasters debuting in the poll. Special attention should be paid to the RIDERS column as the fewer the number of riders, the greater the margin of error. The detailed 2004 results, the ride forces poll results, the rankings based only on ride experiences that occurred in 2004, and the top coasters based on those voters who specified each of the six ride forces as their favorite all follow the multi-year chart below. The results are similar to those for the wood poll, with Floating Airtime taking first place. The main difference is that lateral forces were much less welcome, and positive G's/loops more welcome than for those who took the wood poll. These results are not as meaningful as there are MANY pairings of coasters that no rider had ridden both of this year. As you can see, our poll respondents had ridden an average of 25.9 steel coasters this year. That sounds good until it is realized that when there are fewer than 1/2 as many ride experiences it causes there to be an average of fewer than 1/4 as many people who had ridden each pair of coasters (this year vs. ever). Therefore, I want to be very clear that the following results based on only 2004 ride experiences have a much greater margin of error and are only included here because they may be of some limited additional interest to some enthusiasts. It is interesting to note that SRoS bests EGF here. Unfortunately, nobody who rode both coasters this year (and expressed a preference) voted. EGF's two losses are to European rides Katun and #40 Rock n Roller Coaster Walt Disney Paris FR (!). EGF's tie is with Superman la Atraccion.
