Summer Teams

From an earlier thread, a few of the bored on the board expressed interest in following the summer tournaments. I'm one of those, so here's an initial list (thanks m&g and pro2). Minnesota Meltdown Open: April 16-19 The Warrior Cup Invitational: April 17-19 (1st Annual) Minnesota Meltdown Invita...

If that's the final score, then it's a pretty impressive run by Edina over the past few years at this tournament. Does that make it something like 3 championships in the past 4 or 5 years at the Fargo tournament? I think I remember Wayzata winning a couple of years ago, but it was Edina again prior ...

No sooner do I type it in, than they update the site. Most all of the scores from the first games are now on the Fargo Flyers' site. Not too many surprises. Wayzata, Tonka, Edina,,, and yes Farmington all move on easily. Close games include OMG over Woodbury in OT and STMA over Jefferson. Each 1 goa...

Community-based Youth Hockey Threatened?

Would allowing kids to waiver to an association where they open enroll for school really be the end of community-based hockey as we know it?

It's all a guess, but would there be a major impact?

There’s a discussion going on at Minnesota Hockey regarding eliminating the residency status when it comes to youth hockey. The proposal is to allow youth hockey players to waive to the youth association where they go to school instead of playing where they live. I don’t know who dreams these ideas...

If true, I applaud MH for taking a look at this. Open enrollment hasn't been the end of local schools like some had feared. This is not much different. Here's why... Transporting children to another school, or even district, takes a higher level of family commitment than most are willing to pay. Thi...

Fargo Squirt A Results

For those of you making the trip to Fargo, please provide the rest of us with some updates on how the various teams look as the tournament progresses. There should be some good teams to watch.

Safe traveling... good luck... and have some fun -- in moderation, of course.

CRW,

You are correct on their complete schedule. My bad.

I simply went by what their coach said about their tournament record. I unintentionally exagerated. Good catch.

It should be a great tournament, but my money would be on the Grand Forks Blues. They won the championship last year at the B level. Their same group of kids returns this year, undefeated so far, including a win over the 98 Fire. I've seen the GF Blues play over the course of a couple of years and i...

DH I agree with you. That's why it should be fun to see how these tournaments play out this summer, especially among the younger year classes. With all of the new programs out there, as well as parents that are new to summer hockey, it will be interesting to see how spread out the talent is. (At lea...

Jackstraw, I'm pretty comfortable LISTENING to my kids, and having a conversation with them. Don't presume too much. The question was straightforward. Does it really matter whether kids get their skating in during the winter or summer? IF, kids aren't skating year 'round, I don't think it matters, o...

I think my kids would like to spend the winter ice fishing, snowboarding, hanging out with their buddies, and beating their old man at knee hockey -- provided the old knees don't give out.

Winter vs. Summer

Has anyone considered whether they should continue with traditional association hockey during the winter? If burnout is such a hot topic, and if your local association isn't a good fit (pick any reason you'd like, I'm not trying to start a debate about the virtues and vices of associations), and if ...

And, at least a few of the kids from each team will presumably remain with their team for years to come. Let the rivalry of '00 begin. Seriously, based on current and past teams, how many "original" players on the 2000 teams are likely to remain on either the Machines or Blades four or mor...

I agree with SECoach. Also, I agree with the sentiment that volunteer coaches and board members should expect to answer parents' questions and that some will disagree with decisions that need to be made. HOWEVER, it's also up to parents to realize that unless YOU'RE the one volunteering, YOU don't h...
