yes, or else we cant call Ikola and Saterdahlen good coachesgreatone wrote:Should we count recruiting into the equation?

Woodbury had far more individual talent on there teams while Bill Moore was at the helm. He could not figure out how to bring the teams to the level that Wes Bolin has. The players play there heart out for Wes Bolin and if he were to leave, their system would fall apart the way you are contemplating. Wes Bolin is the reason that they are not losing as many player to the local private recruiting academy's. It is easy to call Bill Lechner a great coach when you get a lot of the local area talent and put them all on the same team. We could take a coach off of the team with the worst record in the twin cities, and he would be mentioned on this thread if he was coaching at Hill Murray.youngblood08 wrote:the brickwall wrote:I think Wes Bolin needs to be mentioned . He has turned the entire woodbury program around. Not just at the high school level but for the youth.
How do you figure?
I agree he is good and has done a great job with the high school but how do you figure in the youth level? Don't you think just winning at the high school has been a boost, how about the amount of kids that woodbury has? Think that just figures in? The kids at the high school now were all at Bill Moore's PDP program when they were in squirts and peewees you don't think that figures in? What, Bolin sticks his head in the room and now you are all smarter? The guy came into a dream situation, a program with numbers and parents with deep pockets, you have a number of coaches with D1 and D3 playing experience. There are more kids in Woodbury playing hockey year round then ever, They didn't lose but a few kids to privates out of this group. The ride will slowly come to a halt once the new high school comes into play and Bolin leaves for greener pastures. Just wait for the Woodtick drama once kids have to leave for the new high school and one team wins more then the other. It will become another Rochester and tear itself apart for years to come.
Thats a bold statement putting Randolph over someone who will possibly know as one of the top three coaches all time. He will be there in wins at least. THat man is Tony Sarsland he was a low key mellow guy you would pick him in a heartbeat he has had one losing season since 1993 or something like thatndirishfighting wrote:7A Hibbing Mr.Decenzo and in 7AA Duluth East Mr.Randolph
7AA has three very good candidates for this honor. LaRocque is almost unanimously praised for his efforts up in Rapids, Sarsland's record speaks for itself, and Randolph took a good-but-not-great program and turned it into one of the best in the state. He is also closing in on a rather major milestone (currently sitting at 399 career wins). He's stirred up his share of controversy, but the results are there.talkofthetown17 wrote:Thats a bold statement putting Randolph over someone who will possibly know as one of the top three coaches all time. Amen. Thats what Warroad experiences sometimes. But they still get crap for it. We just have a good record of coaches that kids like. Another thing people don't realize is that some kids move here because they like they players on the team. Marvins doesn't pick these kids up all the time like some want to believestarmom wrote:Good coaches don't need to recruit. While there might be some validity to this argument, I question it a bit. Pre-Randolph, Duluth East put up essentially the same records they did under him...but practically never went to state. I don't know the other coaches' scenarios quite as well, but AHA never went before Trebil, nor BSM before Pauly, and STA went once before Vanelli.Tigers33 wrote:A private school coach should not be allowed to win, until all private schools are in their own section. Come on guys...private schools might not officially recruit, but they get the top players from other programs. The coach of the year should be a coach that had to over come adversity somehow. I just think it is ridiculous that a private school coach can win this award. Think of the public school coach that loses his top 3 players each year to these schools. Now if that team has a good season then that is coming over adversity and still producing a quality product.
As of right now...I would said Maple Grove, Wayzata, South St. Paul, Woodbury, Red Wing, Virginia, and Hibbing are all teams that I would say their coach should be up for this award.
If Hill Murray wins the State Tournament then I would be the first one to admit that Lechner deserves it for everything he had to deal with this season. But guys like Trebil, Vanelli, Pauly, Randolph (might be accused of recruiting just as much as anyone else) should have the top teams each year, because they have the best players each year. Thus, in my opinion its tough for them to win coach of the year. I am a strong believer that coach of the year should not go to the best teams in each year.
Last I checked there is open enrollment everywhere. You may accuse private schools of recruiting because they put out quality teams year around, but you cant say that only private school coaches recruit. If I am not certain but public school coaches do have mouths too and they can talk just as well as private school coaches. So, quit you complaining. Heck this year you shouldn’t even be complaining because chances are not a single private school will make it to the tourney this year.Tigers33 wrote:A private school coach should not be allowed to win, until all private schools are in their own section.
