Cloquet at Duluth East (12/17/09)

One of the state's best rivalries is renewed this Thursday, and though it may lack the hype of some past years, anyone familiar with the rivalry knows to expect the unexpected when these two teams meet up.

Also, the schedule currently lists the game as taking place at the Heritage Center, which would be a bit of a change. Is this official? And if so, I expect it will sell out...how early would one need to be there to get a decent spot?

Let me see..... East beat WBL 4-1 and WBL beat Cloquet the next day 8-2.

Karl, majority of kids are getting there pre-JV, so like 5 ish.

Yikes. Though I suppose I don't need to be that crazy since I'm not fighting for a spot in the student section anymore.

My flight gets into Mpls around 2:30. It would also be nice to eat some food at some point during the day...

Come on Karl. You know that a good seat at a CEC v. East game trumps food any day. Plus you can always hit up the concessions

Well I'm sure everyone is hoping for a game like the one in the '08 semis, but I'm going to have to say 8-2 Hounds. And if it is being played at Heritage...get there early.

Don't worry...I have my priorities. Food can wait.

Karl, can't believe this will sell out. Not sure where all the East fans have been this year - a very small crowd for each home game so far. Maybe Cloquet will bring a bunch - but don't think attendance will cause any issues.

Karl, before jumping on board the plane, run over to the school's journalism department, grab an official journal pad and media credentials, get a full belly from the fabulous flight food, and then show up at Heritage and just say... "Don't you know who I am?"

You seriously underestimate the enorminaty of this rivalry. I dont think the crowds have been any smaller than usual. We get around 50ish per game.
The crowd at Cloquet will be HUGE, make no mistake.

I don't expect anyone will have a problem getting a seat.. and unfortunately for us in Cloquet, I don't (unfortunately for us) expect it to be less than a 4 goal deficit.. we found out the last couple weeks how this young team will improve during the season BUT still needs a lot of seasoning.

I hate the comparison like 'east by WBL, WBL beat Cloquet' when you're talking about the Cloquet/East games each year, we've seen in the past one team can be down and step up against each other. That said, with most of this group, next year will be the best shot for this group to take a game from East when this group of sophomores and juniors are another year older.

The Jacks team has as much potential as I'd mentioned in the LSC Jamboree thread previously, and just like Rapids found out last season I wouldn't want to get them in an early playoff round (yes, I know that's still 2+ months away!)

It was great to be back watching this rivalry again. It's a very different perspective, taking it in as an alum instead of a student, but it felt great to be back.

East jumped out to a two goal lead right away and sailed along from there. They had some pretty passes going, and I was very impressed by the sophomores. There are still a number of things they have to iron out, but I was encouraged by what I saw tonight.

This wraps up the easier part of the East schedule; now we'll really see what they're made of.

The Lumberjacks had short bouts of OK play, but really didn't get any help in or in front of the net. The JV goalie (sophomore) John Scheuer played well when he played in relief, giving up a goal in each period (2nd and 3rd), and showing signs of hope for the future in net. I wouldn't mind seeing him get more time to really see how he handles himself if he got a start. Other than that though it is a little hard to pull many positives.

In a game when you're a huge underdog your goaltender has to play the game of their life to keep it close and let's just say this.. that didn't happen.

Quite well, thank you. Two went wonderfully; the third...eh. But I survived.
