Who wins the class A tournament

Post by warriors41 »

With the tournament starting tomorrow I figured I would start this thread. Who do you think wins it all in the class A state tournament and why do you think that.

P.S., I'm betting about 6 posts from people who say "who cares, or this team wins the jv tournament."

I think Breck has the best team but I predict they will stumble somewhere along the line.

Mahtomedi is an interesting team to say the least. Strong defense in Marshall and a strong goalie means they can surprise everyone and win it all.

Hermantown has beaten all the the A teams they've faced so far and I think they will win the tournament. However, they have a tough test in the first game tomorrow against Virginia. Ironically, even though I think they will win the tournament, I also think they have the best chance of being upset in the first round.

Warroad will go as far as Brock Nelson can take them. He has scored a point in every single game this year which is incredible. No one has been able to totally shut them down. Your best of beating them is to keep the puck in Warroad's zone and test their young goal tender.

I don't think any of the unranked teams have much of a shot to win it this year sorry to say.

I am going with Brock Nelson to put Warroad on his shoulders and carry the team.

There are some pretty good players in this tourney.

Ben Marshall, Maht 19 G, 53 pts
Brandon Zurn Mah 33G , 72 pts
Charlie Adams Mah 33 G, 66 pts

Brock Nelson, Warr 47G, 85 pts
Brett Hebel, Warr 26G, 70 pts

Adam Krause - Herm 36 G and 64 pts

Tyson Fulton - Breck 34 G and 80 pts
MIKE Morin, Breck 33G, 61 pts
Riley Borer Breck 18G, 58 pts
Chase Nystad Breck 26G

Garrett Hendrickson - Virgi 32 G and 76 pts

Not familiar with this guy:
Thomas Williams - Alex 37 G and 61 pts

Breck is the team, but I am cheering for Warroad, then Hermantown, then Virginia, then for just a good game.

I love this tournament warrior41. It gives us (the fans) a great chance to see some additional great hockey. That being said I think it is Breck tournament to win. Will they pull it off, hard to say. Mahtomedi, Warroad, Hermantown, could potentially spoil the party for Breck and I like their chances to pull the upset along the line.

Breck has the best team and has the best chance.
Warroad isn't good enough to win 3 straight. Not nearly deep enough and goaltending is an issue against good scoring teams.
Hermantown has the toughest draw with Virginia but I think they're the only team who matches up against Breck.
Mahtomedi has a tough task against Alex, who is better than people think. If Wohlers can play like he does against STA in section finals, they will have a very good chance.

My best guess: Breck over Mahtomedi
What I would like to see: Hermantown over Breck

Gotta go with the Mustangs. With the only MSHSL team to beat them this year not even at the dance....again, Breck should be the odds on favorite to become the first repeat champions in the history of the class A tourney. I will say that the winner of Fridays semi final game between Breck and Warroad (assuming they get by Lourdes) will almost certainly be the winner come Saturday. If Nelson and Hebel get hot who knows, maybe they can knock them off. After all, they have the most motivation to win as they were upended by Breck last year even though they outshot them by quite a bit.

Alexandria is a much better team than most have given them credit for. Look for their young goaltender to continue his hot streak and for their 3 captains to have huge games. After this tournament I'm sure that everyone will be familiar with Thomas Williams(37goals 24 assists), the man that infamously silenced the Sabres.

No high school charges the student tuition.
If you're talking about activity fee, I know some private schools don't, most public schools do though. So, I guess "GO BRECK!"

Nice recap of the talented scorers in this tourney. Gotta say that for the Zephs players to rack up those points against the schedule they play is impressive. Granted they had some 11 - 12 goal games in their schedule but they played a bunch of highly rated teams and STILL put up those numbers.....that said....GO CARDS!!!

If your going to do a poll please include ALL the team's in A.
Not that Lourdes will win but lets get all 8 in the poll.

I corrected the OP's oversight and added Lourdes, albeit a little late.

how ugly is the Breck New Ulm game gonna be... Talk about a mismatch .. Wow, Looking at new ulms record, they barely got past litchfield, hutchinson, and dodge county... Didnt even know those 3 schools qualified as a team, then lost to fairbault, marshall/lakeview and delano.. lol wow this is gonna be uglier than Mahtomedi/Alex

Sure, they'll win. And New Ulm will be lucky to get a goal. But the score will depend on their class. Everyone in that arena will know who is going to win and that most of the skaters could make it in the 20-0 range (they beat Orono 13-1) earlier this year, but that will only pad stats, not help the players out.

cant take any chances.. Its a state tournament, all that says is New Ulm shouldnt even be here and a well deserving team should be.... there are probably 20+ team that should be there instead of new ulm... No Mercy Breck... Make a statement out of them

You could make a much better argument Breck shouldn't be there, they should be in AA. New Ulm is the kind of team that the MSHSL had in mind when going to 2 classes.

Breck will win but they have too much class to run up the score more than 6-8 goals.

no... Hermantown is the type of school they had in mind when going to 2 classes. Small schools that are actually GOOD at hockey... Last I checked new ulm was NOT in the top 8 best SMALL , PUBLIC schools in the state...

While I do agree Private schools should be in a whole other league.. But lets not go there..

TECHNICALLY As good as Duluth East is, THEY should and could be a Single A school and be at the tourney every year...

My point is, Schools like new ulm and alex DO NOT deserve to be there... IMO Denfeld and Hibbing are 5x better.. and thats just 2 average schools from north .. Im sure ppl on this board could list many other public schools as well

Can't see Breck not winning it again this year, although Hermantown is interesting.

I really want to see hermantown / mahtomedi... Hawks are a very good team, saw quite a few games this year, but VMIB will be a test
